Gundam 00 while not my first still remains my favorite. It gets it's point across (Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved through understanding) while still remaining engaging mostly due to it's great cast of characters and timeless animation. Tbf while season 2 does get bit more ridiculous there was pretty much no where else to go due to everyone now having GN Particle Tech so I find it not as annoying as others. Overall I consider this series a nice gateway series into the Gundam franchise and thus have gotten many of my friends/peers into Gundam by recommending it.

As a historian, I gained significant appreciation for 00 with the idea of ending war through understanding. MANY wars throughout History were started by misunderstandings (pun both intended and unintended). Many wars between cultures existed because they could not understand values and morals that separated the two (e.g. Rome invading Gaul and Britannia). Hell, the entire reason why the Japanese Imperial Navy bombed Pearl Harbor was because they believed that the US would respond like the Russian Empire in the Russo-Japanese war (immediately suing for peace after a devastating loss of naval strength). This misunderstanding is what brought the US into WWII. Great Britain was brought into the Great War because the German Empire misunderstood how far GB was willing to defend Belgium's neutrality. Misunderstandings are why wars start and escalate. That's the brilliance of 00's message. UC is still my favorite timeline, but AD is a close second.

I really enjoyed 00 for all the reasons presented and also because it felt like a Gundam show that was trying to prevent Gundam from happening. As in, before the distance between people grew dramatically as humanity left for space, they were trying to build some unity that would persist and prevent conflicts from surging later. The second season does change the tone a bit and I understand people not liking it as much, but I think it more or less works as things get out of hand. Mister Bushido was there for one reason and the reason wasn't good enough... But he was pretty funny. Sadly he lacked the emotional core of the superior Cockroach man.

This is my favorite Gundam so far. I always thought of most of the pilots of being an archetype of a different reaction to war, like they fully embodied it. And the Thrones weren't part of CB, they were an attempt to co-op the Plan into a power move, instead of a change in humanity, which Aeolia was going for.

Mr Bushido is bad stupid. My biggest complaint with season 1 was that the protagonists look like the bad guys with their near super robots, but then this is addressed by the season's end. Then in season 2, my biggest issue was all the characters that didn't directly link to Celestial Being were kinda just there. Like Graham was a stand out in season 1 but was given nothing to do for season 2 except show up, YOUNG MAN, then leave after the fight. Glad he more or less reverted to his old self in the movie

I honestly think Gundam 00 has my favorite first season of any post-UC, pre-IBO Gundam series. It hits everything; it's action-packed, it's actively picking apart the contradictory motives of the 'heroes,' and it is mostly about people trying to cope with the intrusion of a seemingly-insurmountable foe into a very sensible, buttoned-down world by the standards of a mecha anime. If it ENDED at season 1, where season 1 ended, which is a genuinely fantastic 'bucket of cold water' closer where reality most DEFINITELY reasserts itself over the heads of the heroes, it might be my favorite of the 2000s-era Gundam shows. Unfortunately, Season 2... does not pull it quite all the way across the finish line. But it's still an excellent watch for season 1 alone.

Biggest complaint about S2 is the realization that the Innovades should have had real GN drives and Gundams. It would have forced a small change to the ending, but Ribbons is kind of an odd placed character because he's given this job that he's supposed to accomplish and none of the tools to do it. Essentially his arc is his rejection of helping guide humanity to innovator status, believing he is humanity's superior. But the story gives him none of the tools to do help humanity and doesn't even make his link to Celestial Being realistic and so nothing really feels earned. Still good, but it's just oddly placed as is.

the innovades does not have access to the real gn drives because all sensitive data pertaining to transam, twin drives, meisters, gn drives were purged when ribbons took over level 7 of veda during season 1. it's like a just in case system, resistance program put in veda. the sudden appearance of ribbons and his goals were too basic, but still fun to watch.

I just want to say that while you called SEED the post-9/11 gundam, 00 is for sure super overt in its discussion of post-9/11 themes. Its discussions of resource wars, energy politics and religious extremeism is very clear, and I genuinely appreciate it for that. Is it perfect? nah. honestly it has that early ‘00s x-treme edginess problem and it kind of runs itself off it’s own rails in the end, but yeah… its sheer ‘00s post-9/11ness is important as a cultural marker in a way. 00 is probably my favourite gundam series, its not the best, but i love the characters ('specially my boy lockon), and i think moment-to-moment its some of the most engaging tv ive ever watched, binging it in one go is probably the most a show has had my attention and kept me engrossed. where it struggles is with the complete effect, it juggles so many ideas and themes and has so many twists and reveals, and i'd argue that when you are watching it thats a strength, it has enough to make you think about what its trying to say, and enough to keep you guessing as to what is actually going on, but that also means that if you were say, reading a plot summary, or had a friend explain the broad strokes, it would just seem like messy confusing nonsense. personally i'd give it a 9/10 for watching experience, 7/10 for quality

Gundam 00's 2nd season and the issues you probably had with it was caused by the traditional Gundam fans. The first season contained a lot of non-traditional Gundam elements which the traditionalists complained about. So they put in more traditional elements into the 2nd season which led to it not being as good as the 1st season because the 1st season broke from tradition in a lot of areas. It's the same reason why people crap on IBO now. IBO for me rivals 00 as my top Gundam series. Yet because it had a non-traditional ending, people now hate on IBO. Just imagine if Seed went with its original direction as well thus how much crap Seed would get. It would probably rival/surpass Destiny's hatred. :P

The mecha designs in general looked great, the background was interesting, and the fact we got a version of the OG RX-78-2 Gundam in the series, and even the seiyuu for Amuro Ray, was a neat touch. Two seasons felt wildly different though, and I feel like half the cast were just a waste of space. Also, the introduction of Trans Am at times made the action feel too lopsided. Overall, 00 and the AD universe was not my favorite timeline, but it was still relatively good.

Oh, I didn't know Tiaria was nonbinary. Cool. My only knowledge of a lot of Gundam shows comes from the Dynasty Warrior Gundam games, so it is cool to hear stuff like this. Double Oh, based on your description, feels very much like what Wing was trying to do, and I respect it for that. Presenting this idea of "Gundam as terror weapon on par with a nuclear power" is fascinating (also you mentioned this in the video nice!), and I honestly really like Setsuna's "I AM GUNDAM!" religious fervor over Hiro's "I'm a weaponized human" shtick. I like 00 until season 2. It's as if they decided to take the elements they borrowed from Wing & put it in a blender with elements from Zeta. Worst of all is the fact that celestial being acted as though they were powerless/ screwed without Setsuna & the 0 Raiser. The first season Gundams could hold their own in combat but come season 2, even with their upgrades, everyone would say: "Where's 00?!" I get that Setsuna is the main protagonist & the 00 is his upgrade but good God! Other than that & the movie being lackluster/ slightly boring, 00 is pretty good.

Anno Domini sounds really good, ill have to check this one out. Though UC is my favorite time-line. This is about the most realistic. Why? Well after WW2 the Nazi's actually escaped from what we know as "earth" traveling past Antarctica to the lands beyond the known world and settling on Terra Vista, Lumeria, Hyperboria or Atlantis. The technology that the Nazis had were far ahead of anything the Allied nations could develop. Everything we have today is a derivative of their tech. I think in the future they will return and wage war against the nations left on "earth". To us it may appear we are in an alien invasion when actually its the Aryan Nazi's invading with their UFO and Delta Winged craft. I think some of the worlds governments have kept in contact with them to trade and develop technology. All speculation but can be supported with factual information and ancient history.

Part of me saw Gundam 00 season 1 (and this specific caveat is important) almost as a reaction to SEED (to a lesser extent, Wing's formula too) and almost an examination of its hypocrisy. The Gundam Maester are self righteous, sometimes even annoying pricks who basically at the end of the day believe that moral superiority lead to peace and their moral superiority is justified because fuck you, they got the giant toy robot that shoot disco lasers. They also exist beyond the main factions as their own faction, which echoes the whole thing that Kira is superior to everyone by taking his own stance. There is also Setsuna's religious nuttery with the Gundam that is almost like a dark echo of the messianic overtone of later Gundam show. Add in a lack of initial antagonist and the complete absence of a full Char clone and this is a Gundam show that is trying very hard to both be Gundam but also exist as a contrast. If not for season 2 and a tonal shift, in part because some says Japan found 00 to be TOO DIFFERENT from previous Gundam works then Gundam 00 is almost the anti-SEED in its initial episodes. By season 2 its almost like a self parody. Graham Acker goes from a not-really-a-Char-clone-he's-just-blonde to wearing a mask and having a new identity because, hey, we need a 'masked guy'. There is a villain because the show need a villain. Setsuna BECOME the same type of Kira-esque cheesy messiah the show was almost mocking.

Gundam 00 is my first foray into the mecha rabbit hole. While many would say that it is "gay shit" for being the One Direction of Gundam, I think it is because it is the One Direction of Gundam that made me, a woman, interested in Gundam, and based on my experience with other Gundam and mecha fans in general, Gundam 00 had attracted a lot of women into a mostly male fanbase. Gundam 00 may not be into the "old guard's" tastes, it has instead attracted an untapped market.
