@andrewowens44213 жыл бұрын
Watching G-Reco I never felt that any of the opposing sides really wanted to go to war. More like they were jockeying for power and influence, but kind of fell short of going full-blown war. Sure, there were some war mongers, but they felt more like they were pushing _existing_ conflicts instead of escalating into newer ones. G-Reco felt like a field trip where the main cast was going around trying to figure out everyone's problems and come up with a solution that could placate each faction in the best way possible with the resources and influence they had.

I love fast Tomino, but that is because I understand Tominos writing well enough to fallow the intention of the writing. I can see the plotline even without the exposition because I have seen a bunch of Tomino stuff already. That is why I don't mind F91, my brain automatically fills in the blanks.
@Sorain1 Жыл бұрын
In other words, you know enough about his style that if handed a few paragraphs out outline, you'd fill in the blanks with a roughly 85%+ accurate portrayal of the results. Which is kind of cool, and kind of sad at the same time. (Cool you can do it, sad it's so predictable... or cool that it's consistent?)

I enjoyed G-Reco quite a lot, but it is worth acknowledging that while it does have a fair amount of depth if you look, it doesn't make looking particularly easy. I would say its biggest issue is conveyance, more than anything; it's not that there's nothing there, you just have to really go excavating to find it and it's never particularly clear how much is intended vs. accidental.

The continuity is simple but there are two of them; For Tomino it's UC -> Turn A -> G-Reco but for Sunrise it's Everything -> Turn A. Tomino didn't watch G, Wing or X before making Turn A so the references to other shows in the Dark history are just references and nothing more. This is obviously doubly true for the other AU shows that came after Turn A. For Tomino the Dark History is metaphorical but for Sunrise it's literal.
@angellara70403 жыл бұрын
Doesnt g reco make three?
@alfianfahmi54305 ай бұрын
I believed in Tomino's interpretation, really. It makes a lot more sense. Sunrise's interpretation is kinda too cheeky because they just throw in references from Gundam Multiverse. Like seriously, there are references from Turn A, like the geography locations, sites, etc. Not to mention the technology, environment, rules, and circumstances of living in the G-Reco universe is kinda like a step up from Turn A. The development of weapons of mass destruction (Moonlight Butterfly and Photon Torpedo) were more likely stemmed from the research on the technology contained in the Turn A Gundam itself, considering the many feats it got.

I just wish they'd give the G-Reco suits the HGs they deserve instead of leaving them in the dust of 2014 kits that are engineered like 2008 kits. @@RezaQin Here's my massive hot Gunpla take: inner frames in kits are overrated. As long as the finished kit is solid, posable, and featureful, what does it matter how much grey plastic is hidden under the armor plating? I genuinely think G Reco is a series that's worth giving a chance if you haven't already. But you have to know going in it's a show that gives you only as much as you put into it. It wants you to pay close attention, give it multiple viewings, and try to read between the lines. And this is intentional. Almost every character in G Reco is an irrational actor running on an incomplete picture of the situation, and acting in farcical ways because of it. And you are put in a similar spot, having to piece everything together with limited information, not entirely like trying to sort through the messes of real geo politics. But I genuinely believe it's absolutely worth it for the show's message, world building, and characters. It's not going to be for everybody but there's absolutely something there there that might be rewarding for you.
@ketchuprats8378 Жыл бұрын
this is why it works so well for me. a lot of my favorite pieces of media are the ones that have a ton of room to think just think through them, and g-reco provides that more than maybe any other gundam due to the combination of solid worldbuilding but a ton of obfuscation of that solidity

Haven't seen G Reco but I do like how the G-Self is just kinda adorable? Also regarding the Ivalicean timeline, since oyu did ask us about our thoughts on timeline shinanigans; FFTA's Ivalice happens after Vagrant story and is in the modernish day, with the magic book createing a false copy of the real ancient Ivalice over the world for all their benefit. FFTA2 is a slightly different magic book just straight up isekai'ing Luso into the past, roughly around the FF12 period but obviously after 12 itself. It does mean a LOT of supernatural races get extremely killed out as 12 transitions to FFT proper, and that's super fucked up, so I choose to believe they're just in hiding.

I think G-Reco is actually really beautiful, but much like Turn A I treat it sort of as a "congealing" point in timelines, and in a way separated from the other timelines in that fashion. But as a Turn A fan I have to say that I think if you did include G-Reco it would put the Universal century at the front because it has the closest technology to that of Turn A and that very first Turn-A would really kick start the other series.

When G-reco came out, I remember the co-founder/former president of Gainax; Toshio Okada, after watching it, said something along the lines of: "G-reco is incomprehensible!" I can't wrap my head around how the nonsensical most of the characters are. Also, I always called the Rectens 'Simons' every time they appeared.
@kman23843 жыл бұрын
Huh, I think calling the movie compilation "incomprehensible" is a little bit much considering that there is many new scenes that is added to better explain the characters motivation and making the story flows better (the only thing that makes the movies close to being "incomprehensible" is the editing (and to a lesser extend pacing) which is a result of shoving five episodes worth of screen time into one movie, and even then it is still can be remedy by paying close attention.)

I don't think G-Reco is incomprehensible by any means on the first pass; the general motivations for the factions are generally grokkable if you pay attention. I just don't think those motivations tie super well to the actual events as they play out, or are especially interesting most of the time. As an example: Megafauna going to Venus because they want to understand what's going on is understandable *in theory*- there's a connection between the Rayhuntons and Venus, there's a connection between the sudden taboo violations and Venus... but none of that really matters to or impacts the conflict itself. In practice, the plot needs them to go to Venus to meet the G-IT folks, rather than there being meaningful incentives for bailing to Venus. Going to Venus doesn't accomplish anything other than 1. triggering the G-IT guys to go to Earth, something that they could have done at pretty much any point regardless of the Megafauna showing up, 2. let Tomino be fatalistic about Newtypes as a concept, and 3. explain who Cumpa is and why he broke the taboos, something that doesn't actually matter that much or impact the plot moving forward; he gets to get accidentally killed randomly after having very little bearing to the events that follow. Different strokes for different folks!

There's not much in the way of details on any distinctions between any UC spinoffs, and frankly, Sunrise keeps going back and forth on the topic. I love Gundam very much. But Tomino's feels like a strange, strange man. I somehow feel disturb(or unease) watching his work. There is a lingering discomforting presence in every dialogue he wrote. Like even though it is thematically makes sense, no human would say it. A bizzare, strange style The culprit that made me realize I felt this way is G-Reco. It is the distilled, pure, unsupervised and unchecked essence of Tomino. Now I cant even ignore the "Tomino-ness" moments in his other works and I hate it. Does it means I am not a true Gundam connoisseur, who is here for the intricate space drama? Am I just a pleb who only wants to see giant robot fighting? Who fucking cares. I can like a concept without liking the original creator.s style. That's what I have done with Star Wars before and that's what i will do again.

Honestly Tomino lost me at CCA, or Chars Midlife Crisis as I call it. While his fatalism was abundantly clear in Zeta and from the points of ZZ that he joined up in, it just went off the rails in CCA, not to mention his weird justifications of turning Char back into a full villain with no real explanation ((Surprise! Now he has an army and a flagship! And a super advanced sports car...I mean mobile suit!)) just to force a fight between him and Amuro, something he'd largely moved past in Zeta. The sad thing is, I think completely on its own and with no connection to the other Gundam series it would have been a fine real((Ish)) robot series. I think that coming directly off of the original MSG it would have made more sense as well, Char would have had more time to gather an army from the remnants and create his super suit and his motivations would have still largely been intact. Coming off of Zeta, however, it makes almost no sense, with the only thing potentially being Kamille being a vegetable which STILL doesn't really make sense, since he lost to Haman and her Zeonic forces at the same time. Its just...ugh... But I think its okay to just like certain aspects or series or even just parts of a series. Its also okay to fall out of love with them as you delve deeper into the artists work, its understandable that gaining a deeper understanding could color how you view their earlier work.

@kman23843 жыл бұрын
@@palladiamorsdeus Because CCA wasn't supposed to coming off of Zeta, but it is an adaptation of a latter part of High-Streamer novel and Char's motivation and line of thought is explained in the first half (considering that the cross media storytelling is very common in Japan, it's not wrong in the slightest to consider High-Streamer to be a "true" sequel of Zeta.) Even then, I think Zeta already gave plenty enough hints for viewer to draw a conclusion that by the latter half of Zeta Char's demon has already rear its ugly head (not to mention that if you pay close attention, Char's action in the first half doesn't always line up with what he's saying, suggesting that he's still can not completely overcome his demon like his word would suggest.) And seriously, while I think Tomino has many faults calling his work "force" or "doesn't really make sense" without looking at the context of storytelling and production is very much unfair.
@kman23843 жыл бұрын
Does it a "Tomino-ness" though? When that kind of "weird" character interaction or dialogue is very much not out of place when compared to the anime in the late 70s to early 2000s.

@@kman2384 Actually it is. I have watched plenty of anime from the time period, and Tomino's shows are the only ones like this. The others, while different from how it is done nowadays, are till much more watchable and easy to listen to and follow than the way Tomino does it. In fact, apart from the feeling, I also notice that Tomino's shows are much more exposition heavy than the contemporaries. While not JoJo levels, there is still a lot of Telling rather than Showing in his works. And given the popularity of his shows in the past, it might be a contributing factor to why modern anime dialogue is so full of exposition.

I feel most uc gundam would work better if they were their own continuity stop at counterattack and breack them off in their own time lines

I like to think of it like this: the regild century is the culmination of the Universal century timeline The correct century is a parallel dimension where everything merged in ways so weird that it became the black history

To me this show was nothing but a giant slog to watch. It felt like I had to force myself through it. I think one reason G-Reco can be such a chore is that it is very exposition heavy, constantly lobbing concepts and explanations at the viewer. Everything has to be described and characters state what they are doing or thinking, even during hectic scenes and even when it doesn't make sense to. There is simply a lot of telling and very little showing. And then there is of course the dialogue where it feels like character are just talking at each other rather than with, on top of constant shifting of subjects and non sequiturs. And not helping matters is that it is trying to put focus on way too many characters all at once, causing none of them to really get enough. And even with that crammed runtime so did it feel like the whole Venus arc was nothing but filler. As for the G-Self, seriously that thing tanks any kind of engagement given how it seems to get new powers every other episode that is convenient at the moment only to be forgotten by the next. Hell, it takes until the final episode until it even get's scratched, let alone damaged. And speaking of engagement, a lot of conflict in the show feels like it is just there for the sake of of it. Just some random stuff to have some pretty beams to fill some episode quota. And I feel like I don't even have to mention just how little sense the whole deal around the Kuntala makes. When it comes to Tomino, I can see that he has decent ideas, but for whatever reasons the execution of those ideas rarely if ever work out. Most of his work I just find passable at the best of times. And boy, the dialogue in his works for some reason always tends to be horrendous. I don't know what it is with it, but characters always sound annoying, even when played by actors I know are good.
