Here's what Alex Hirsch had to say about Ford in the DVD commentary for GF: "Ford’s great flaw is arrogance. He believes that there are special people, and everyone else… …That human attachments are actually weaknesses. The song and dance that he’s giving Dipper here is the exact song and dance that he gave McGucket back when they were younger - ‘You and I are different. We’re better than everyone else. We have a path that no one else can understand. No one else can do this.’ It’s a very seductive idea for Dipper, but he starts to be a little insecure. He kind of can’t believe it, and he’s sort of right to be suspicious, because while Dipper is a smart kid, Ford is projecting. Ford loves Dipper because he sees someone who will tell him ‘yes’ to everything, who will never challenge him, and who will do a really insane, dangerous mission. I know there are some fans who are like ‘Oh, this is a great offer! Dipper should just become a mystery hunter for the rest of his life, not go to high school, not go to college, not be around kids his age…’ But if Dipper had taken the apprenticeship, he probably would have gone the way of McGucket - Turned into a kind of insane, paranoid hermit with no friends, and just kind of losing his mind. So, it is a seductive offer, but ultimately, Dipper needs to try to learn not to grow up too fast.”

There’s no reason why he can’t have both, build a social life with friends and still be mentored by Ford but like a summer job or internship or something. It’s all about having a work/life balance, because Dipper still loves mysteries and learning from Ford can help, but spar some time for others too. The take on Ford was still interesting, makes sense, I just think there’s an alternative conclusion where everyone gets something.

Slight spoilers for the end of the show if anyone cares: Reading this makes me enjoy this show even more. I always was sorta iffy about dipper rejecting ford because of the opportunity but this gives the conflict a bit more depth in my opinion. Makes me wonder if ford also wanted dipper to be his apprentice because deep down he still wanted to have some sort of family relationship around. I do wish that there was a balance between dipper and ford doing work together during the summer like the comment above me stated, but considering how the show ends it’s possible that there could be partnership the next summer

@@peanut4668 Dipper could always go and do an apprenticeship with Ford after he finishes high school. I think the problem with Ford's offer in the show is that he's asking Dipper to give up the rest of his childhood for it. There's no harm in waiting until Dipper has finished school to start the apprenticeship, and it would be more beneficial for Dipper to finish growing up around kids his own age, and to finish high school so that he has more career options (yes being Ford's apprentice would be a great opportunity, but if Dipper tries to go into other scientific work later on, the lack of a high school diploma would limit him, and potential employers wouldn't understand how valuable being Ford's apprentice would be, they'd just brush Dipper off as unqualified).

That makes sense. Roadside Attraction definitely felt like it should have been placed earlier in the season. It wasn’t a bad episode, but it felt out of place timeline wise.

Not only that. If that episode had been placed much earlier in the season, that would've explained why Dipper acts so confident (especially in front of Pacifica) in Northwest Mansion Mystery. I'm a big Gravity Falls fan and I love the series, but I still think that putting that episode so close to the end was one of their biggest mistakes. It's fun and all, but it doesn't even work as "calm before the storm" because it seriously feels out of place in every way.

When I was Wendy's age, I would have 100% agreed with her about high school, so I think that that moment is valid regardless of the reality of the situation. btw in the bit of live-action Dipper and Wendy in the car through the bubbles was their Voice Actors dressed up as them

Journal 3 In the real life Journal 3, the Author finds an old box with the word "PINES" and an etching of a key on it. Inside the box was a note encoded using the Vigenère cipher. When decoded, the message reveals that shortly after the events of "Blendin's Game," the members of the Time Police began picking on Blendin for losing Globnar to two children (Dipper and Mabel). Even the Time Baby is reported to have called him "No-Friendin Blandin." Fed up with the insults, Blendin wishes it would stop. Bill Cipher appeared moments later offering to stop the Time Baby from bothering him anything again. Blendin accepted this deal, allowing for Bill to begin Weirdmageddon. Atleast Bill respected his part of the deal by getting rid of them Haha

I didn’t know that! That explains how blendin got possessed by bill. This is another reason why I feel gravity falls needed a third season. So many plot points got squeezed and condensed in these 2 seasons. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why Alex Hirsh(SP?) didn’t want to do a another one, ( He was tired and burnt out after the first season) but I think the show would have been even more of a masterpiece if we had one more season. We barely had time with ford and boom, we’re in the finale. Still love this show though.

It's funny, episode 16 is often seen as a "weak episode": it's a "filler episode" in the second half of season 2 which is full of story and character growth and just before the big finale. And Dipper kinda evolves in the wrong way for most of the episode despite the character growth he had in the whole show. It does get solve by the end of the episode anyway. But I agree that it is still a funny episode and kinda horrific too, thanks to Darlene XD Anyway, it just proves there are no really bad episodes in the great show that is Gravity Falls. Buckle up for an AMAZING finale!

This is a response to the whole ''Mabel is so selfish'' discourse cause i already see it coming Yes she's at times but she also made sacrifices too It's not one sided In the time traveler episode She lost Waddles to help Dipper's ''chances'' with Wendy We ALL know that Dipper and Wendy would never work so we're put in this false impression that Dipper is the one sacrificing something that doesn't exist for Mabel Same thing with the pool episode with Mermando All he wanted was to stay in the staff to get closer to Wendy, while Mabel was doing it to save someone I don't know why suddenly it's ''Mabel's selfish'' as a response to what happens in this episode Take it from her side In Carpet Diem, with the body exchanges, we were foreshadowed how both of them care about each other and don't want to get separated even if they get on each other's nerves at times Here this situation escalates with Ford's proposal While Mabel is struck by the reality that future can be scary Ford's arrogance like highlighted by Alex Hirsch is the reason he thinks he's one of a kind and want to take Dipper as an apprentice But Dipper is a teenager, barely 13 He needs to grow up, have friends and live a normal life Stanford & Stanley are a good example of how things could go wrong when you're alone feeling betrayed etc Mabel doesn't know about the rift, exactly because Ford created the secret(rift lol) between him and Dipper and excluded others, foreshadowed by the ciphers in the Dungeons & Dungeons episode ''Small things can have huge repercussions'' Yes less ppl knowing about it is a good thing But he asked Dipper not to tell anybody, not even his twin sister(back in episode 1, Dipper trusted Mabel to talk to her about the book, even tho the message written was ''don't trust no one'', even tho trusting her was the key to how they defeated the gnomes, highlighted at the end by Dipper's monologue) Mabel doesn't know what the rift is because of that and before she understands Bill took the opportunity to unleash it It's not just about the 13th birthday party too Mabel saw a vivid example of how siblings can go against each other with Ford and Stan in the ''Story of 2 Stans'' episode She was even worried and asked Dipper if they'll ever be like that. Dipper answered no obviously but she wasn't reassured and the episode ended on that fear. And this episode reinforces that feeling that everything's gonna go wrong without Dipper)

I think the show didn't really show the audience how being Ford's apprentice would be a bad idea for Dipper himself. To me, it kinda paints the picture that Dipper needs to throw aside his dreams because he loves his sister and she wants him stay when those aren't the only reasons he should turn Ford's offer down. As you said, Dipper needs a normal childhood, but I feel like that's something the audience (who are/were mainly children) wouldn't understand without the show making it more clear. Older audiences can make the connections between what went wrong with Stan and Ford vs. what could go with Dipper and Mabel does this even make sense idk

none of those sacrifices that you listed were nowhere near as big as the sacrifice that dipper would’ve potentially made to not take fords offer. mabel essentially wanted dipper to put aside his own potential wants & desires so that she could be happy. she didn’t care about what dipper wanted at the time, she was only concerned about how she felt if he wasn’t around. she wanted him to have a future/livelihood that he didn’t desire the most at that time. none of the “sacrifices” that mabel made for dipper jeopardized her potential future/livelihood. both of them have been selfish, but what mabel wanted (which was for dipper to not follow his wants & desires at the time so that they could stick together) was one of the most selfish things that i’ve ever seen. but that’s just my opinion.

I don't think high school is that bad either. Its the changes in your body, mentality and hormones, trying to find yourself and views in life that makes it "depressing" or "stressful". Cause honestly when in high school u change your views from pessimistic to a bit realist/optimistic life is not that bad Edit: but if it's too much to take get help from counselor, therapist or psychiatrist.
