Alan Watts was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker known for his profound insights into Eastern philosophy, particularly Zen Buddhism, and for his ability to bridge Eastern and Western thought. Born on January 6, 1915, in Chislehurst, England, Watts showed an early interest in spirituality and philosophy. He began studying the teachings of Buddhism and Taoism at a young age, which deeply influenced his intellectual development.
Watts embarked on a lifelong journey of exploration, delving into various philosophical and spiritual traditions from around the world. He received a master's degree in theology from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Illinois, where he was ordained as an Episcopal priest. However, Watts soon became disillusioned with traditional Christianity and shifted his focus to Eastern philosophy.
Throughout his life, Watts wrote numerous books and delivered countless lectures, captivating audiences with his eloquence and wit. He became known for his ability to convey complex philosophical concepts in a clear and accessible manner, making Eastern wisdom accessible to Western audiences.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Watts gained widespread popularity through his radio broadcasts and public speaking engagements, where he discussed topics such as the nature of reality, the meaning of life, and the pursuit of happiness. He became a prominent figure in the counterculture movement of the 1960s, influencing a generation of seekers and spiritual explorers.
Despite his popularity, Watts remained humble and down-to-earth, emphasizing the importance of direct experience over intellectual speculation. He encouraged individuals to embrace the present moment and to cultivate a sense of wonder and awe for the mysteries of existence.
Alan Watts passed away on November 16, 1973, but his legacy continues to resonate with people around the world. His writings and lectures continue to inspire and challenge readers to question their assumptions, explore new perspectives, and live more fully in the present moment. Alan Watts's life serves as a testament to the power of wisdom, compassion, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

Alan Watts is a big bag of rice with a hole in it... Every word falls out of his mouth like a grain of rice falling out of the rice bag.... if you follow the trail you will have enough rice for a nourishing meal.

Saw, heard him at his house in Tiburon in 1969 while at UC Berkeley. When a student caused a loud sound passing gas, he commented that we needn5 laugh at something natural. No longer listen to a man who chose drinking himself to death. Clearly he did not believe in his own teachings when he put zero value on life . As a teacher and an exampler.....nuts.

Alcoholism is a disease. It's not like he chose it. It's an everyday battle and not all of us get the chance to win and survive. He was a human being like the rest of us.

This is a true outlook for sure-my own once too, but it was his life and that's how he choose to enjoy it. Right? Take it as it comes, enjoy the ride, and the universe is, was, has and always will be you, of you, for you and your consquences of the choosings. Love you. ❤

It's all good and great until one looks into actual biography of motivational speakers or philosophers as well as "peer reviews" on their theories. Usually, their words go one way actions- another. Watts was viewed as pop culture more than anything else if I'm not mistaken, and many of his remarks are elitist and far from the spirit of Buddhism. Entertaining, not inspiring

He was highly educated in many religions which fed his philosophy. He would not be the first "non perfect" human. How about you? Got there yet?
