Living in Canada with our extreme seasons, I have always shifted back-and-forth between strength training indoors in the winter and cardio training outdoors in the summer. Always feeling somewhat like I was starting over each time. It’s so helpful to be learning effective ways of maintaining both through all the seasons.

I have been running and lifting for over 15 years, it's interesting to see it trend now as "hybrid" training. It is refreshing to listen in on your educated view.

Thank you so much for this info! I’ve always been a lifter and recently got into running - balancing the two was a challenge at first (esp with all the misinformation out there). But this video and others on your channel have helped me and now I’m training for a marathon and still lifting !!

I’m in my 30s and I grew up in a household where my dad trail ran, strength trained, swam, and cycled (he still does all that), so naturally I’ve always combined fitness modalities and never questioned it. I’ve been surprised at how much hybrid training seems to confuse people. I’ve really enjoyed listening and learning about the science behind this through your content. 😊

That is awesome! My dad was similar and I grew up an athlete and running and lifting and just playing. I think it’s the body building style of fitness that trickled into what is fitness industry fitness and people don’t know any better!

I have been weight lifting for about 2 years. When I was younger I used cardio as my only form of exercise to the point that I began hating it. However, now that I’ve healed some parts of me I am looking to begin cardio again and having been following you for hybrid training. This video definitely helped educate me on what exactly that means and how to implement it in my own training. Thanks Lys!

This video made me realise that I probably lean more towards the endurance end because it feels like where the most fun is at for me personally (running, cycling, swimming, hiking, etc just feel more experience-driven than lifting when I think about applying my activities outside of just the strict exercise context), but the resistance part of things is still really important to me because feeling strong helps me to feel more independent and confident…and it obviously supports all the endurance stuff that I find so fun!

We absolutely want some lifting too! Makes those activities easier and stronger. And so important for health! A little goes a long way!

Super-informative content as always! My takeaway: hybrid training spectrum vs. 'purist' hybrid training, i.e. for peak effectiveness of different training modalities. I'd genuinely never considered hybrid training in the context of seasons/a customizable-to-needs spectrum before. Great stuff to think about here. Well done!
@sarrahthornburg3189

This video was full of great content! My general takeaway was that hybrid training is trying to maximize potential two different things simultaneous. For me, I didn’t think both modalities could be maxed out. I thought you be a hybrid athlete but have to have one modality that you emphasize more than the other. Thanks for info!

Always great info, really helpful to understand the premise of hybrid training as I embark on my own hybrid journey with a return back to racing half’s this fall. I have always been intimidated by how to manage both running with other activities and usually gave up in the past. Determined to maintain both this year!

Love that you're helping people do BOTH endurance & strength - I've always been told that you can do both but can only get good at one at a time. While that may be true, it steers people away from trying to do both which, in my opinion, is best for your overall health. I'm so glad your goal is to help people define hybrid for themselves and help them accomplish that goal!

Bingo! And for most people they aren’t extreme or elite enough on either end to worry about it yet. Getting better at both makes us better at both and finds a happy medium of athleticism and health!

I have really struggled with figuring out my fitness routine since retiring from rugby. I didn’t really have a label for my preferred training style, but after listening to your content it is certainly this “hybrid” approach because that was what I have learned to love while training for rugby. I love running and lifting. I’ve been focusing on training for races to help guide my fitness routines, but I really like also considering training for strength/resistance goals again. I hadn’t considered adding those goals back in to my fitness routines. This “hybrid” approach feels like the all encompassing fitness framework to adapt to whatever goals or phase of life you’re in. Thanks for covering this topic!

Really interesting talk! Thank you. 😊 I'm in my mid 50's and have been a runner pretty much forever. Dabbled with body building in my 20's. Now my 2 sons are in their 20's and I've started to train in the gym with them. Endurance running (trails) and lifting complement each other so well. And I feel strong. 😊

I lovelovelove this because I'm also doing hybrid training. It's amazing and exhausting and rewarding and difficult and so fun. I've been a powerlifter for 10+ years, and I started running a couple of years ago. I've been running "seriously" for about 8 months now. You're the first person I followed when I started hybrid training, and I have learned so much from you!

Love this primer on hybrid training! I want to improve my strength in the deadlift, squat, and bench and I'm planning to run in a half marathon distance trail race. It's been fun to dabble in both! I am in it for the overall health gains, rather than excelling in either sport. Want to keep lifting and running/hiking as I age and so there's no time like the present!

Naturally I am drawn to the endurance side of training, as that was all I was taught as a kid and only now in adulthood am I finding how helpful lifting can be for overall function in life tasks in addition to helping make me into a stronger and more confident runner/biker/etc. wish I had this knowledge before when I was just running all the time! Such a refreshing reminder that one can do both strength and endurance 🙏 I sometimes get caught up on my perfectionism and give up on having multiple fitness goals at once to only do the same thing next time I set my new goals (because otherwise something is missing 🙈) and get impatient and overwhelmed again, thinking I was destined to fail. Thank you for all the knowledge you share ❤️

Thanks for the clear definitions! Struggling a bit to find the right balance, esp. with regards to pushing myself with things that I find excuses lack off with (ie. end range mobility drills like PAILS & RAILS) when I'm feeling fatigued/sore/cranky. Sometimes pushing through that barrier is absolutely the right thing to do, sometimes it feels counterproductive and I should be doing something else.

Also here for the ebook! 😅 I've always been someone who loves to lift weights. TLM has helped me build strength and now I'm starting to run as well where I'd never have done that before. Mostly I didn't know how and wasn't successful on my own. Looking forward to hybrid training on my terms and continue to remind myself that "you're not fit enough to worry about that" 😂

I think balancing multiple goals is always a struggle, especially with limited time for all of us "regular joes" who don't get to focus on it full time, and with 90% of programming only focusing on one goal. Even the two I know of that combine goals are either strength + endurance OR strength + mobility.
