#Bletillastriata #Chinesegroundorchid #Terrestrialorchids
THIS, IS SUPER INTERESTING! BUT... as it was a gift from Fernanda Nascimento Orchids & Succulents, also a little nerve wracking because I do not want to do wrong by this orchid. In this video, I take you on the road to discovering #Bletillastriata together with me, looking at the roots, assessing it's needs based on what it came in in the nursery can, and using a little intuition regarding how I can make it thrive in my Southern Spanish climate using #akadama . If you are new to this #orchid, like me, then you have clicked on the right video, because... we will find out together! 👍🏼

I do have Bletilla striata. They are planted in the ground outside western exposure. They do die back every winter then regrow in spring when the weather starts to warm up. I do have to protect them in case of late frost which happens every year. You gave me a great idea of maybe putting some in a pot then I could bring them in my screened in patio if the weather gets awful. I don’t do videos. I did send you a picture of one of my Phalaenopsis, but I don’t think you got it. I’m not very good with my I pad. 🥺. Thanks for sharing your video.🤗🥀

HI Shirley 🤗💐 you sent a picture? I have to admit that I did not see it / get it 🤷🏼‍♀️ but you know what? I sent emails in the past, and people have not received them either, so.... I am clueless as to why sometimes emails do not go through, but I check my junk mail every day, several times before deleting the folder... I understand the frustration, so, my apologies for whatever happened there. But thank you so very much for trying and when you get a chance, try again 😬 I am looking forward to seeing more of this Bletilla and what it does next, IF it even will like the akadama long term. Discovering as I go 😬 thank you so much for taking time out of your day to watch, and I will be on the look out for another email from you. Jen, hi 🤩💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so, a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here, I really appreciate it 🤗 your bird room sounds wonderful!! I would love to have a bird room for my cockatoo, but for 3 hrs/day, the living room and his jungle gym transform into the bird room when he comes out of his cage. I do not have any plants in those spaces because he is super interested in anything resembling green 😬 My bletillas are now slowly starting to progress on their growing points, which surprised me when I repotted them into a community pot late 2022. If you are interested to see how they progressed since this video and how the akadama performed over the past years, kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqqknHWXf8yIja8 here is the link. Hello Nina, I'm really interrested to see the evolution of that project because I never succeeded in growing Bletillas properly in inorganic medias (no matter the method, SH, self watering, just regular culture with inorganic media...), at best I managed them to survive, but not thrive (while they grew like weed in the ground of my previous garden, where they sustained -15C in winter without damage...) There are several issues I face : 1) The winter rest, if they don't get cold enough temperatures, exactly like cypripediums, they fail to grow properly, either grow weakly out of season, either refuse to grow at all 2) They like to be burried (the new growth are always deeper than the previous ones), but the shoots, which form in autumn before dormancy, have a tendancy to rot if too wet during their rest (but keeping them dry in winter doesnt work either) 3) The roots, which they grow only once a year, don't like air at all, if they feel air pockets, they dry out and die, if they're drowned while emerging, they rot, at the opposite once established and in active growth they demand loads of water, but then in autumn it has to be drastically reduced as well else it's the new shoots which rot, and pinpointing the exact time to do so is not an easy task (and they're not really forgiving, one week of too much or too few and they sulk for years to come) 4) And then, there's the pH, every sources say they are really tolerant, not in my experience, they want a pH of 6 to 6.5, more they grow weakly, less they show signs of calcium/magnesium deficiency. The best success I had was in fine grade kanuma in self watering, but still where they double in size each year in soil, the increase is much slower in inorganic media, if there is increase at all (only one repacement shoot per direction of growth instead of the usual 2 is not uncommon). So in the end, I'd be really curious to find which parameters are critical, perhaps soil has a natural buffering tendancy regarding wetness, pH, nutrient availability, temperature, maybe the fulvic and humic acids, or any other organic compound play a role in their growth regulation? Bletillas are a bit of an UFO in the orchid world, right from the start of their life, they're not really selective regarding which fungus they associate with to germinate (even on simple potting soil, they still germinate well, it has been stipulated that even in natural conditions they might not need a fungus to germinate), they seem to do best when left alone in the garden without much care, they are hungry but seem to do poorly with mineral fertilizers (but give them manure and they thrive), when they're happy they grow like weed and can even get invasive, but are prone to sulk forever when something is not in their taste, even once the issue is corrected. Also, I am really starting to question the quality of the current stock supply, 20 years ago Bletilla striata was sold as a dormant corm in a pocket of peat alongside spring bulbs and those grew well, nowadays they are sold potted, and they don't do as well as the previous stock, even if planted in a border in the garden (without even considering the fact that the plants supplied by at least one specialist nursery located in Belgium often test positive to several families of virus, just like their pleiones, and are often mislabeled, again, just like their...) Anyway, I hope you will have more luck than I did in your experiment, and I'm really interrested if you find a mix of conditions which works well. Best of luck ;) On a side note, I 'm currently sowing some Bletilla formosana, which I find much easier to grow in pot, from a few seedpods I had last year; so, providing they germinate, if you want a flask or seedlings, I could send some next winter :)

Hi Julien! 🤗💐 forgive me for answering your comment last... this one, is incredible and I have read it as I reply.... thank you so very much for taking the time to give me all this intel on this orchid! Wow!! I have no words, except, thank you and... how very much I appreciate this 🙌🏼👍🏼🙏🏼 Very interesting to read your experience with inorganic media and this orchid, 1.) do you think the roots NEED the mycorrhiza that soil would provide, to thrive?? Could that be why inorganic doesn't make them thrive? 2.) my temps don't drop below 5ºC, well, this past Jan I did get 4ºC, but that is super rare... would that be low enough for them to grow / perform? 3.) I am so going to watch the moisture ... after reading your comment, regarding winter conditions in the pot! As I was filming, I was discovering this orchid for the first time, and saw how delicate the structures are on the new growths, so, in my head, the rot thing jumped up real quick, you confirmed that... so... I will watch the dry / moist layer carefully.... possibly monitor it with a bamboo skewer 4.) I can do the pH you mention... that is my margin for most of my orchids, sometimes I go to 5.8 for those that do not absorb their reservoir as quickly as others, but, thank you for the heads up on the pH!! 👍🏼 I am even more curious now to see how this orchid progresses in this set up! Only next season will determine if it is a success or not, and if not, then only in 2023 will I be making any necessary adjustments. I would love to take you up on your offer for the formosana, yes!! Wow! Despite not know if my set up with do striata justice, by that time, i will have learned a lot more and change what I can conclude for the new little ones. 🙏🏼 oh my goodness, how kind! Thank you so much!! Once again... this comment of your's is gold, and I really appreciate the time you took to give all this information, so very generous of you! Thank you, Julien!! I hope that you are having a great Sunday so far 🌸

@@NinjaOrchids 1) I don't think the roots need the mycorrhiza, especially since the seeds germinate easily on pretty much any type of media and the plants have an impressive growth in vitro. That being said, the fact that the plant is not really selective regarding the fungi it recruits might precisely leave its roots vulnerable to more agressive fungi, which could explain the tendancy it has toward root tip burn/dieback when starting growth in wet environments (the balance plant/fungus being strongly tipped toward the fungus in such conditions) 2) My temperature problems were basically that I had no place to store them for winter which was frost free but still went below 10 (they are absolutely hardy, the problem is that in a pot they remain liable to freeze from below and no matter how hardy a plant is, it's not likely to survive being turned into an ice cube), I should have tried sticking the pot in the fridge ;). As long as nights go below 10 it should be fine, above that, they tend to skip dormancy and grow out of season. In the end, I find a lot easier to just put them outside at my window in a big container with regular potting soil and forget them there :D The formosana is much more tolerant regarding winter temperatures, and it does well here in a kanuma/pumice mix in self watering setup (I sent you some pictures of the flower on insta)

@@NinjaOrchids Haha! Yes, even a cold-hearted German cat person can appreciate those little munchkins haha. Honestly, this is the same way I feel about all the phalaenopsis and Dendrobiums in my garden centre... At least they have Miltoniopsis sometimes as well! Thanks, you too! 🐽
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 жыл бұрын
oh mine has Miltoniopsis, but what for? They are not happy in our climate... so maybe they sell them because people have to buy more once they've killed them. I do not have those simply because I do not want to fight with an orchid 80% of the year. Hence.... no more large vandas for me either! I did great for the first 2 years, and then they got so big, I could not take care of them anymore. Which is a shame, but I cannot justify the cost of new RO filters to fill the vanda tub every week, and my tap water is so bad that even after 24 hrs of letting it sit before pH etc, the big vandas hated it. So.... Aufwiedersehen! 😒
@MattbyNature
@MattbyNature 3 жыл бұрын
@@NinjaOrchids Yeah, big Vandas scare me... And I think you made the right decision there - who wants to struggle all the time to make a plant survive? Even if it makes it, it will never be as good as a plant whose needs align with your climate.

🦒🌸🌞🤸!!!! I am so happy that it is so well advanced. When I repotted mine I did not take a look at the corms, they were getting into dormancy so I decided not to mess about. So how interesting to see how those rounded corms actually look like. They will fill up your pot in no time and I would not be surprised if they bloomed for you this year unless they resented the repotting. They are very fussy about it apparently. Mealys? Gosh, mine didn't so far, but I better keep an eye on them 😳 I loved that you filmed the whole process, quite interesting and it adds good knowledge to this episode. FFF 🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🙌🏼🥰💐🤞🏼 looking good so far 😬 you have a lot of confidence in me, sending me this orchid! Do you know how hard it was for me to leave it alone, until I saw what it would do next? 😅 The winter, at least I was not focussing on it that much, but... yeah, I have been itching to deal with it, and get into the pot to see what the roots are like! So glad that it is so vigorous... a massive help! Now the pressure is on to make it thrive... I would hate to mess this up, but, I think I can work with the akadama in this configuration. 😬🤞🏼it is indeed getting warmer 🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️ still a little bite to the breeze, but the night temps 🙌🏼🙌🏼 3 degrees difference within the same week, maybe a little dip end of next week, but, even that may change ... was so busy yesterday cleaning the patio, and preparing all the areas for the rest of the orchids, today I feel like a train ran over me... why I woke up, I do not know, so... I am going to just do my YT housekeeping and then nothing for the rest of the day. It is a waste of a day for filming, but I think my voice would sound the same as when I did a video right after cleaning leca ... flat! I shall watch some golf and probably fall asleep again. Yesterday I was watching this video, once uploaded on YT and saw a glitch in the footage... the screen went green in a section 😳 I have had this case before, but the video at that time was 5 days ahead of schedule, so I could take care of it with plenty of time,.... so, last night, I had to upload everything again, and am glad that I made it on time. It was just a second of green where the image was covered in green, and I could have left it, but it would have bothered me if I hadn't tried to correct it. It worked... but, have you ever had that happen to your footage? In the editing software it can be seen, and there are no filters on my videos, so... just wondering if you sometimes get a glitch in your videos when you upload them to your editor. I wonder what that could be, because, I caught it twice in time, and maybe one day, I won't see it and would rather know how to avoid it happening 'out of the blue' (green in this case 😅) Thank you for taking the time to do this video... I know that you are super busy... so, I really appreciate this CareCollab so very much. Your kind feedback is also very helpful as I learn about this beautiful gift from you 😍 there are 8 more colors out there 😒mmmhhh!!! 🤣🤣 no!! Don't go there!! But if this one does well, I will ask my garden centre if they would not look into finding more. They should do well here, so why do they not have them on offer? Another side note, the Spanish news is saying that our cooties cases are rising again 😒 its a roller coaster 😒 have a wonderful Sunday, meine liebe Freundin!!! Much love to you and your's ❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids 🦒🌷🌷🌷!!! I was so lucky I could find these little orchids, I had never heard of them before. I got there just in time😃. Greenscreen... No, I never did. I have an option in my editor for green screen and I googled to find out what it was, having something to do with animation!? I never used it to do anything, however my call to action to subscribe, which I uploaded from the web had a greenscreen background but clicking on it, it turned transparent. I am still a bit confused about it but as I never used it I even forgot much of what I read about it on Google 🙄. @@FernandaNascimentoOrchids my glitch is not the greenscreen that erases backgrounds and makes things transparent, its different. Morena hi! 🤩💐 good to see you again! Since this video aired, I had an update kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZ61dp-Mpr6Dm9k and at that time it was doing great! I really challenged it during the summer, and burned the leaves... now I know it's limits, and this time it will stay in bright shade. This season it is looking amazing, I have 10 new growths coming from the little you saw being potted up here. If I had had the funds back in the day, I would have used seramis. My using akadama has everything to do with me wanting to find an alternative to seramis, locally... mixing in the grit was to keep it airy, seeing as seramis is much more airy! So, go ahead ... use seramis! I would have done that if I had had some back then 👍🏼👍🏼 I don't know if I will get any blooms this year, but, I am pleased with the 10 growths. It lived outside during the winter, went dormant, and woke up early February 😃 thank you so much for watching this video, Morena! I hope that you are having a great day 🙌🏼🌸

@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Valarie 🤗💐 absolutely... ask away 👍🏼 I used to grow in bark, only out of necessity, because Spain did not have leca locally (the stuff we have here, for many years, floats! 😅) back in the 80s I grew all my houseplants in SH or self watering, depending on how the pot sizes were available. When the trend of leca and self watering pots started out in Germany, I immediately transitioned all my houseplants because it was a cleaner system, especially for indoors. So, then when I had my 2nd orchid collection, I wanted to do the same for them, but by then I had moved to Spain and proper leca for hydroponics was not available, and I had no choice but to go with bark, which is crappy quality here, ... meaning it needs a bit of work and tweaking to make it fit for purpose. However ... life happens, and when I got the chance to build this 3rd collection, I was able to source leca locally and went to town. That is the history, I left soil growing many many decades ago.... the second biggest reason is resources! I can recycle it, reuse it, and don't have to make a decision on which orchid needs a repot more urgently than another... last year, I had to repot 50 orchids... I would not have been able to afford that if I were to be growing in bark! I was so relieved that I had this media, and in some cases, lava rock, to reuse over and over again. To answer your question in a nutshell (maybe a little late at this stage 🤣) I am used to SH and Self Watering and cost. I hope that you are successful in growing your's! I am on the road of discovery with this one and it can be an absolute success with akadama or, a flop. However, when I hear terrestrial, then, based on my houseplant experience back in the day, I am already quite confident that this will work... as long as I can keep the new growths from rotting. Thank you so much for watching, Valarie! Enjoy a fabulous Sunday 🌸

Nina, I looked these up. The purple and the white are really beautiful. They should be hardy outdoors in my climate. I will have to think seriously about ordering some for my garden.😊 Sherrii San🥷 BTW, I ordered Lady Chatterley today.😀

🌸🥷🏼 Sherrii 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 hi!! They really are and yes, they would be hardy in your climate, absolutely! Mine bloomed for the first time this year, which was a nice thing to see. However, the pollinators are starved at the time of their blooming, so my blooms collapsed quickly. I have since potted these up in a big bowl and have a variegated variety in that bowl as well. Not sure if you want to see 'what I did there' here is the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqqknHWXf8yIja8 if this were my property, I would have them in the ground as well. I used to collect Irises and had a big patch of many varieties, and the funky rhizomes, while not the same, the potting up and creeping habit is very much the same. YOU ORDERED A LADY CHATTERLEY??!!! 🥳🎉🎊🪩🪩😆 yay!! I am so happy you found her and woohoo!! She's on the way! So exciting 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🙌🏼 wonderful news!! Thank you so much for watching 🌸🥷🏼🫶🏼 I wish you a beautiful Sunday ❤️🌸
