So I fly with two other guys for a part 91 operator who owns two Lear 45s. We don't really have a set schedule, we just up and leave whenever the owners want to go somewhere. Usually the maximum time we're gone is 4 days, which honestly doesn't happen that often. Most of the time it's 3 days, or even just an overnight. There's also a lot of day trips in there. I'm a younger guy, late 20s. My chief pilot and the other guy are both in their mid 50s, so there's definitely an experience gap. We only do around 500 hours a year total. Sounds great, right? Well, I thought so too when I first started flying there. That's how they sold it to me : "Oh, you'll be home a lot!" And that is true to an extent. What they don't tell you is that it's impossible to make any kind of plans because our owners can call us the day before wanting to go to Broken Dick, Arkansas and we have to go. Doesn't happen that way all the time, but it happens enough to keep you on your toes. Plus we do a LOT of weekend flying. Our busy days are pretty much Thursday to Monday. Which basically means you can have a random Tuesday off, but when normal people want to do stuff with you on the weekend, you'll be unavailable. It doesn't bother my coworkers, they're both pretty seasoned pilots with families of their own, both married for a pretty long time, established in their own lives and whatnot. On their days off they pretty much just stay at home and do Dad things like mow the lawn, play with their RC car collection, or work on their backhoe in their shed. So they can literally be ready at a moment's notice because they don't do anything anyway LOL. But I'm gonna be honest, it's a little difficult for me because I can't really do much on my days off, because you're not really 100% sure you're gonna have that day off until the evening before. Anyway, what I'm getting at with this long rant is that I wouldn't mind the whole 4 days on, 3 days off thing of the 121 world because then at least I'd know for sure those days would be mine. No last minute trips to Palm Beach or St. Simon's that upend whatever you had planned. The whole 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off does not appeal to me also because I don't think a certain person I've been seeing would appreciate it lol. Doesn't matter as much when you've been married for 25 years, but when you're just starting out, it can put some strain on the relationship.
@BaronPilot8 ай бұрын
Exactly why I wouldn’t take a Part 91 job that doesn’t have hard days off. I have friends with the same issues. Can plan anything as they never know when a trip will pop up. Another example why I love my schedule.

I’m a former 135 Charter Jet pilot and currently flying Airbuses for a 121 operator. In my opinion, the flying was way more fun at the 135. However the schedule was terrible. 8-14 days on the road with 2-5 legs a day really took a toll. Now I’m only out 4 days at the most. Works much better for me and my family, but to each their own.
@Nghilifa8 ай бұрын
I can definitely feel that. I'm in flight training right now and I wouldn't mind bagging a 135 job when I've got the hours to do so. That being said, I don't have a family yet, so I'm much more flexible as far as work is concerned. I can imagine that with that schedule that you mentioned, being away from one's spouse and children will take a toll indeed (assuming you're married that is). Fly safe!
@BaronPilot8 ай бұрын
It’s all perspective. While you may be away more days in a row, you’re also home 2 weeks in a row. Not many people can say that. But again I completely understand both arguments.

Back in the late 70's and most of the 80's, I flew my T210 in there for deer and elk season staying in the cabin in Lake City. Also went in Blue Mesa a few times in the 690 Commander.
