I rarely post comments, but I have watched almost every episode of your what is it and the answers. I have this obsession with finding and using older tools, I have a nice collection of tools and get a lot of joy using them all thanks to you, I wish I lived closer to you. Rants, I wouldn't call them Rants. You're just speaking the truth. Take care of yourself, so those of us that truly watch your channel religiously can enjoy many many more videos. 😊 Thank you I like both fomats, the other format had me waiting for the answers like a kid waiting to open my presents on my birthday. 😊😊 Thank you again.

Mr. Pete, I’m being a little unfair being a retired physicist. Number two is/are the two halves of Magdeburg hemispheres. Created by Otto Von Guericke to demonstrate atmospheric pressure. In the middle of the 17th century, much larger hemispheres were sealed with grease and attached to a vacuum pump. Apparently horses couldn’t pull them apart, hence showing the pressure of the atmosphere keeping them together. I have a similar set in my vast collection of interesting items (called ‘junk’ by my younger brother) and used to attach one half to a beam on the ceiling and had a ‘volunteer’ on the other end. Much to the amusement of pupils, the two halves couldn’t be separated. 👍🇬🇧👍🇺🇸👍

I like this format! I have a Proto carbon scraper just like that and it works well, especially if you can soak the carbon with some Berryman B-12 Chemtool first. I don't recall seeing No. 2 demonstrated when I was in school, but we did have a lot of good science when I was in school. I'm about 30 years behind you, but I agree that the state of education is shameful today. It simply amazes me how unprepared to confront the world our youngsters are lately. Keep up the good work!

Good morning Lyle, I like this format better because sometimes I don’t get back to see the follow up video. Your corn video reminded me of a roadside corn picking venture my brother did. He brought back some beautiful long ears and we boiled it for dinner. One bite in and it was the TOUGHEST corn ever. We learned later that farmers usually plant 6-8 outside rows of FEED CORN to discourage thieves from getting to the prized crop. It sure worked.

Again, I watched all the way to the end! I only knew the spoke "sharpener", but had a general idea that the corn stalks had to do with seed production. I was never allowed to work de-tasslling corn, as I had to drive a tractor on the family farm raising crops. PLease take this in the humorous manner it is intended, but you did prove with the Magdeburg hemispheres that you can suck much more than you give yourself credit for. #3 I knew as a spoke shaver; yes I watch Engels! #2 Going on your hint about school, which I didn't finish, I thought it was some kind of a bell from science class, of course. Not the kind of bell you ring. But I got my lessons from babysitting, when kids get their whole faces stuck in a drinking glass and you gotta slip a drinking straw by their cheek to break the suction. Then don't give them glasses that can cover both their nose and mouth at the same time because it's a suffocation hazard. #1 I had to wait for the answer, also. I was thinking it was a paint scraper that didn't really work. When you said carbon scraper and never saw anyone acutally using it, I laughed. It's a must-have shop wall decoration! I love these, wish the notifications showed your channel up more frequently. It makes me think of all the puzzling trinkets that get dug up in archaeology, and no one can guess what it is, and even if anyone guesses right you'll never know because there's no one who knows that's around anymore to tell you! I had a half dome of this solid heavy glass round given to me by my aunt as a wedding gift amongst a bunch of cool stuff. For 5 years I couldn't figure out what it was, it had holes in it smaller than my pinky finger. I couldn't figure out if it was used to make rope or for macramae or straining something, or if it went to something. So one day I had the opportunity to ask her sister, and she told me you put it dome sidedeown over a large mouth vase and stick your cut flowers in the holes. It keeps them in arrangement. I tried it but it just didn't look good no matter what. Styles in flower arrange vases must have changed. Enjoyed this! Thank you!

I like the format. I dont remember seeing that vacuum demo thingy in the late 60's when in high school biology and chemistry. We read something covering that principle about the same time (6th grade) as they showed pictures showing how heating air caused a chambers to spin. But we never saw live devices demonstrating the theories. I learned most of my science from the public library and in my dads garage. Dad was a shop teacher who didnt mind me trying things as long as his safety rules were followed. His safety rules are now enforced on my grandkids in my shop.

I like this new format with all the mystery tools and wild rants thrown in for good measure. I thought the black bell thing might be an old grammar school bell that went raaaaahhhp to call us in from recess. How interesting to learn that it was a scientific teaching aid. Three of my grands went to Iowa for several summers to work in those big seed-corn fields. I didn’t fully understand what they did until I watched this video. Hot sweaty work in tall corn was hard but they had big hearty meals, places to sleep, were paid well and made good friends with other teenagers. One summer was enough for some but most enjoyed it enough to return all three years.

1. A scraper of some type. Never used one in engine work, we used a wire wheel on a grinder. We also used a hand knurler on the piston skirts if there was piston slap. 2. A chamber to demonstrate vacuum, but I did not have one in high school. We used a program from the Physical Sciences Study Committee for our physics class. We did the collapsing can trick in chemistry class. 3. A tool for making tapers on dowels. The shaft fits a brace and is adjustable for depth. 4. Seed corn. You are absolutely right about the lack of basic science knowledge today in spite of the STEM programs. I was a nerd in high school so I took physics, chemistry, algebra I and II, trig and solid geometry. Calculus was not available.

I left high-school for early college in 1988. I never saw a magdeburg sphere. In the 80's Mountain West school administrators got some half baked idea that it would be wise to cross-train teachers for subjects they were unqualified in. So the gym teacher became the math teacher with predictable results. The math teacher became the chemistry teacher. And unintentionally blew up the classroom by dropping a large 1" cube of sodium into a glass cylinder of water. No one lost an eye. But there were as many small contusions from flying glass as you might expect. Back then no one cared much.

@mrpete222 Sounds like it was an opportunity to teach drafting, and call the result art. Went to the local steel business to have a simple shape made from 1/2" mild steel plate. It was 10 mins of work with a plasma cutter, or maybe 15 with a torch. I drafted the part on plain construction paper. 1:1 scale. Some 2" holes. Mostly straight lines and right angles. It would have earned a "C+" or maybe a "B" in shop class. And I would have done it by hand if I didn't know that their plasma cutter would be cheaper than the hole saws I would wear out in the job. They were fascinated. The oldest guy there was maybe 40. They'd never seen a hand-drafted spec sheet before, and passed it around the shop to show everyone. They said they knew it must be important if I'd taken so much time... I was dumbfounded. It was the foot of a support column for my garage, whose factory position was slightly out of place. Easy-peasy. That scrapped foot got the holes welded in and turned into a shim on the garage a few weeks later. I fear the tools, CAD in this case, have usurped the place once occupied by the minds supposed to direct them.

3, dowel pointer, 4, De-taseling for seed corn. I had a physics teacher who wrote a bunch of formulas on the chalkboard but never had models to demonstrate. He later ran a Radio Shack at the mall. Thanks, Mr Pete!

I enjoyed this episode and I think this format might be better that separating the questions and answers by days. I have a few comments based on my personal experiences: The carbon scrapers worked pretty well. The sliding band can be used to leave the the tips very flexible so they conform to combustion chambers or slid forward to make it somewhat like a solid end scraper. I didn't take the physics or chemistry classes in high school and having a very, very low draft number, I didn't even try to go to college. I graduated in 1972 and went straight into the military. I am certain that I have never seen that demonstration but my fifth grade teacher spoke of using negative pressure for scientific experiments. I owned a dilapidated building that once was a blacksmith shop. It had been stripped of anything of value before I owned it but I had been in it a lot before that happened. Two brothers had owned it and not only were they blacksmiths and ferriers, they built wagons and at least repaired wheels, There was the tools you showed there as well a a band saw, jointer and table saw. The saw and jointer were built of mostly wood and were driven from one of the two line shafts. Regarding the seed corn field- I live in corn country too, about two and a half hours south of you!

THANKS for the videos and THANKS for the Infromation that only the creators get to see. WE have no idea what youtubers bet paid. NONE> no idea at all. I find it interesting. I really don't think it's a bad thing that people know. I myself worked for $26.50 a day custom harvesting in 1981. We milked cows until 2010(class b) so I know what it's like to work for nothing.

Rants are the best part, but I love the series. I can usually guess about 70 percent of them. But all enjoyable!

I like the new format ( I will admit that I am impatient). I was pleasantly surprised that you recently found one of my comments interesting enough to reply to, I know that you are a very busy man, and I thank you for the reply. Years ago I swapped a Marlin model 1895 in 45-70 for a butchered up 12 inch Atlas Craftsman lathe, which I later gave to my brother in law. He recently asked me if I wanted the lathe back ( heck yeah!). I plan to use the knowledge gained by watching your videos to restore the lathe, so at least one old lathe will be restored as a result of your videos. If anyone who reads the comments knows of an old machine that has been restored as a result of Lyle's videos, please let him know. I'm sure that he would be encouraged by knowing about it.

I like both formats & I have paused to give my answers, 3 is like the device Mr Engels uses on the spokes of wagon wheels so they will fit in the device which produces the round tenons to fit into the felloes. 4 the farmer is making gaps in the corn so Roger Thornhill [Carey Grant] can run away from the aeroplane .

I like the new format as well. That is a very nice Welch catalog, and yes I remember that image (originally a woodcut?) of the hemispheres as well.

Scratcher to remove thick rust? A vacuum ball to demonstrate the phenomenon of vacuum and the force with which it interacts. A stake planer either cuts sharply like a pencil or to a specific size, i.e. diameter.

The black sphere, we never had one in my grade school nor my high school. In high school, we had a chemistry lab that was equipped with Bunsen burners, black marble (or some kind of material) top tables with a sink in the center. Weather was talked about in other science classes and I never saw that sphere before. I was a freshman in 1962.
