Keep in mind this only half of the story. Stephen King's book is 1,500 pages and is divided into two halves:The first half is when they battle It for the first time when they're kids and the second half is when they battle It when they're adults. They decided to do the film in two halves rather than cram it all into one movie because they wanted to do the story justice.

It's not divided in two halfs in the book, that's just how they're making the movies so it's easier. In the book it's much more intertwined, switching from their adult lives to flashbacks of their childhoods throughout. As the book progresses the switches come more and more frequent and the periods become shorter and shorter so that, in the end, you read about them beating the clown as kids and adults almost simultaneously. I think it's great that they divided the story into two parts. I'm excited to see how they interpret it.

I think the only reason they split the movie into 2 parts is because they saw the trend of the Harry Potter series & Twilight. In both of those, they split the last book into 2 separate movies. Why? Because they can. The powers that be know the fans will shell out the money to see it. The first movie was done over 4 nights, approximately 2 hours (not counting the commercials) each night. Granted, because it was made for TV, they really kept things rated PG. I can't remember how they depicted everyone getting out of the sewers, which shows just how memorable the scene was.
