The Purge has a really interesting backstory. The writer/director came up with the idea after his wife got really pissed in traffic one day and said, "What if everyone was allowed one legal murder a year?" She felt really terrible after that, because she's a super nice person and never gets angry like that. But naturally, her husband (James DeMonaco) took the idea and ran with it. The film was super low budget, since he was a complete unknown at the time. Blumhouse was also still just an indie film studio. This is why it's a home invasion movie and barely explores the purge at all. Ethan Hawke agreed to star for a very low salary, because he was friends with DeMonaco. Having that kind of star power gave the film more credibility and drew in bigger audiences. Since the film was a surprise hit, the next movie was able to have a much larger budget and actually go out into the purge world. And as we know, it turned into a whole franchise. Oh, and Ethan Hawke also took a cut of the profits from this film since he was getting such a small salary, so it ended up being his most lucrative role ever!

The plot actually isn't that bad, because the thing about "crime going away cause of purge" is what the bad guys in this movie say. What they really do is killing the poor people who are more likely to do crimes because the poor people can't protect themselves. When u think about it, it's actually a pretty good concept. The Movie i mean...not the Purge.
@Axterix132 жыл бұрын
Not really. The concept is pretty stupid. What's the first thing you do as a community in the face of the Purge? You band together. That right there pretty much rules out any disorganized attempt to get you. Furthermore, anyone out prowling has to worry about others out prowling, as well as a "shoot first, the questions don't matter" rifle shot from a window. So you'd get some targeted murders, where people wait until this day and then go for their target because they believe it is worth the risk. Could be for revenge, could be to get rid of a rival, an ex, and so on. Mind you, I could see two gangs going after each other on Purge night. After all, if there is a large group of people moving together, well, you aren't going to take a shot at them by your lonesome. And they have incentive to wipe each other for turf wars. But keep in mind that they'd adapt pretty quickly as well, and in most areas, probably have a truce on Purge night. For the rest, mostly a few wackos would be out and about. You'd get a hell of a lot of domestic murders, though. Don't eat anything that isn't in a sealed package on Purge night. Especially among the wealthier who don't want to pay alimony/split the wealth.

y'know what I always thought about this concept? They have a day to do whatever crime they want, with no repercussions. But crimes aren't always solved the day of, so they could just all get arrested the day after cuz they commit a crime that's illegal there, regardless of the day it was performed on. Otherwise, somebody's excuse for murdering someone could be "no I did it on purge day" so long as there's no evidence it wasn't. They say all crime is legal on this day, but they never said that the crimes are just forgotten about afterwards, so technically they could all just be arrested the next day. With this in mind, this could've been the first purge as a new concept idea to the public, but it could end with them eradicating everyone who performed to make the community "safer" since they got rid of everyone who would willingly commit murder when given the opportunity.

Like the whole issue with crime vs income inequality and the truth behind the purge is explained better on the second movie (which, in my opinion is the best one haha). First movie is basically about rich white people's problems, with a insinuation about what might be happening with the poorer classes. Second movie is about the reality for the lower classes and the third is all about politics and the revolution of the lower classes. I LOVE this trilogy 😂 y'all can judge me now

I've never seen the movies, just this reaction. But I thought it was implying people without shelter or security were easy prey and thus murdered, not that poverty was eradicated somehow. And the low unemployment was bc the unemployed were among the ones who couldn't afford shelter, and maybe also that it's hard to let someone go if you think they might murder you over it down the line. lol
@gabyy21laverde5 жыл бұрын
@@STOP.musick people with low income can't afford high security measures, so even if they stay at home and don't participate on the purge they are the main natural prays. On the following movies they explore how the government is participating on the purge and eliminating the lower classes. Highly recommend for you to watch the movies, they are not art, far from it haha but they are entertaining and do attempt to have a social commentaty

To ensure there's still a country the next day, imagine bombing the entire country. The rich are comfortably protected and anyone that can afford a good anti-purge security system. But it you bomb everything you risk killing skilled workers like doctors and you cripple the country. You gotta have some rules. You also can't kill upper-level politicians cause you need someone to run the country the next day.
