What is L.A.’s REAL Eastside?!?

The L.A. River is a physical & geographical dividing line between the eastern & western halves of L.A.
However, some communities west of the river consider themselves to be part of the Eastside. So I wanted to know once and for all, where is L.A.’s real Eastside?

Open up your history books boys & girls. The ORIGINAL "Eastern Los Angeles" is now known as Lincoln Heights. It was the City's first "suburb" and changed it's name to honor one of our greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln. The neighborhood is a great symbol of the melting pot. Lincoln Park has a great statue of Honest Abe and right across the street is El Parque de México which has many statues of great Mexican cultural figures. It's something that only happens in the USA! Too bad its overrun by the homeless right now

Good episode. Some people even count the 110 freeway as the dividing line of east/west.

My uncle lived in Silver Lake from the 70s and into the 90s, and it was NOT a place you'd associate with trendiness. It was a very Hispanic neighborhood with others mixed in. My uncle was an old Cuban moving man with a truck who scraped out a living. Only $$$ is of permanence in the grand ole USA.

Great and informative video, however, there was no mention of what ‘central LA’ is. Although this term is not as commonly used as westside and eastside, I feel like defining that could add clarity to this debate. My personal perspective is that eastside is east of the LA river and westside is west of La Cienega, so anything in between those two would be considered Central LA. Places like silver lake, Hollywood, Koreatown and downtown would all be part of central LA.

First of all East Los Angeles isn’t even in the city of Los Angeles. How about who is east of city hall? Therefore the east side of LA is non other than Boyle Heights!

The cultural dividing line doesn’t always coincide with the geographical; that makes total sense to me. I think if there’s so much debate about where the division between the east/west side is, maybe we oughta name the section between them. Liked we got east coast, west coast, Midwest and south for the US; maybe everything east of Fairfax (or whatever) and west of the La River (or whatever) should just be its own thing with a name, doesn’t necessarily have to make sense/be literal. Like, koreatown or what I think of as the whilshire area, I don’t think of it as west or east side. Personally I think of west la as anywhere where the ocean starts to affect temperature, and east la as anything east of or maybeeee around the river.

Eric Brightwell proposed "Mideast Side" and some others "North Central". Some people include them in Northeast LA. I like the sound of "King Marshall Land" after the middle and high schools - but their attendance areas include a good size chunk of East Hollywood and that's part of greater Hollywood.

Since context is always key, Eastside could be east of the river ,east of the 110, east of La Cienega, or east of the 405, depending on geographical context.
