Change up how you practice those scales and arpeggios! An often overlooked approach, this technique will make you think differently over the same chords and HEAR those same pitches in a new way. #onenote #eartraining #mindtraining

I’ve been a bass player four about 18 years, had a great improv teacher when I fell in love with the bass, did a BA and masters in repertoire, then put down the bass for 5 years because there’s no orchestra work. I’m doing education now and rediscovering double bass and learning E bass via vitamin P and through your videos. You’re doing great work. Having fun learning to groove again thank you!

I didn't know this was called lateral indexing. I discovered this on my own when i decided to start with open E and for each note up to the 12 fret play 2 octave triads with the note being the root, then the 3rd, then the fifth. I didn't do augmented or diminished, but you easily could. I find this to be a good way to practice triads with all inversions of major and minor indexed on 1 tone.

This is how I learned to practice and it was pretty much the only theory I ever learned. I'm not the best player in the world but I can crank out original songs and riffs all day long.

Playing the 7 Diatonic modes in paralel uses every note in the Chromatic scale. The Chromatic scale can be harmonized creating a common pot of chords - this is something I've been thinking about recently. This video reminded me of it!

Yes! C lydian, C major, C myxolidian, C dorian, C Aeolian, C Phrygian, C Locrian, B lydian, B major, B Myxolidian,, B dorian, B aeolian, B Phygian, B locrian. That is Lowering 1 note every time, also the Root (From C locrian to B lydian, which is from Db to F# (Gb enharmonically) . after all modes in C and B you've been through all keys, but not all modes of all keys so keep on going: From B Locrian to Bb etc ... AND you are going neatly through the Cycle of 4ths each time. Do it with scales, arpeggios.... fragments...

Whenever I see modes being played from C to C, D to D, etc, all I hear is an ascending scale. I do not hear the individual modes and their characteristics. My approach is the same as the one you illustrate, play the modes from the same root tone.

Sorry I didnt understand anything. Do you have some sheets with the notes you are playing. And what about the exercixe with triads? where to start and why are there different combinations? what to use? minor or major thirds? thanks in advance.

Try this: from F to F, one octave, how many chords can you figure out and play on your instrument? F Maj F min Bb Maj Bb min Db Maj D min F dim F Aug Gb Maj Endless possibilities on one note. Play and listen hard.

I never want to have to think too much when I practice; I don’t practice scales much, just plug away endlessly on pieces with depressingly slow progress. Maybe if I try getting back to music theory (that I hated in college) and quit being so intellectually lazy, it might improve my proficiency, even though I play classical piano & flute, not jazz. I’ll let you know if it does!
