What is Latin? The question is not so easily answered! Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
The problem is in defining what should be proper Latin style, often called "Latīnitās" or "Latinity" by the ancient Romans and educated speakers of the language for the past 2,000 years. A majority of authors who followed the Gold Age of Roman literature, spanning from approximately 70 BC to 18 AD, including the very gold standard of Latinity, namely the works of Marcus Tullius Cicero, were effective or supremely good at imitating the style of their predecessors over the millennia, giving us the gift today of an unbroken chain of Latin speakers and authors since antiquity.
There are many thousands of people today who speak and write in Latin on a daily basis - see the myriad links below for all the podcasts, KZbin channels, blogs, books, schools, and conventions where Latin is the sole instrument of communication - and we who use the language actively must ask ourselves what the standard, proper, right use of the language is, from vocabulary to syntax. No doubt Cicero is to be imitated most assiduously, but what of other authors who came after who deviate from this style? particularly the Mediaeval and Renaissance authors, who form more than 80% of the almost innumerable works written in Latin over the centuries. Are we allowed to use their coins vocabulary terms and expressions? Or should we aim for something more Classical? Do we lose something or gain something by concentrating on Golden Age Latin with severity or exclusivity?
