Thanks so much for this documentary. I really cried when you mention lipedema with veins insufficiency. I tried a lot of diet plans and workout for over 11 years with no sufficient result. I had tree trunk legs by the time I was 11 or 12. I am 57 now and recently I needed a hip replacement. My doctor told me to lose 20 lbs before surgery. Knowing that my leg size would not change much I started a pre-surgical diet that is intended for 10 days and continued it for 3 months. The doctor was annoyed when I went in for the surgery and was relentless with my husband until my husband told him I could lose 50 lbs and it wouldn't make a difference in my leg size. His response was that I didn't lose any weight and it caused him extra time in the operating room. I can't wait for my follow up to educated this putz.

@@Adixonnz you sound so much like me, I was so active when I was young, but when I turned 10 I started gaining weight out of nowhere.. my mom was a lifetime member to Weight Watchers so she always kept my eating as healthy as possible... but it didn't matter I really didn't eat all that much, and to this day I have been fasting pretty much all my life not on purpose. I'm just not a big eater, and have been eating once a day for at least three decades.. I was at the gym 7 days a week, I walked four miles a day, in fact I walked everywhere, if it was walking distance I walked..I was extremely active, but I could never keep the weight off..It's extremely frustrating to put so much into staying healthy and still being fat..no one ever believes me either.. I started carnivore and it has been working for me..

Wow... So recently I've just heard of this and it always takes me back to my ER visit over 15 yrs ago. I remember the young doctor telling me how my fat was compacted from my waist to my knees. And that was the perfect way to describe my bottom half. I want to see if there's a doctor, perhaps Cleveland clinic that knows about this. My mom has the same shape as I do. This started at a young age of possibly 12 yrs old. I was extremely active and avid biker. Then in my 20s my legs became misshaped and since then I've always known I would never have legs like other women. Now I'm in my late 50s and just learning about this

I was in my freshman year of high school when a boy in my class made fun of my legs. I didn’t realize until then that they were so ugly…stove pipe straight with zero indented ankle. Fast forward to this year, at age 78, and I’ve just learned that my now so heavy and “fat” legs actually are a lymph issue! Thank you for this information which I’m taking to my new primary care doctor. At least I don’t need to feel shame any longer as I know what has caused this.

Not to mention all the procedures that doctors said would help or “cure” what they diagnosed me with. I had already been in pain for 8 years. People still look at me like I just made it up when I try to explain my diagnosis.

Good documentary, however I would disagree with the recommendation of a plant based diet. I have gotten amazing results with my lipoedema with Carnivore diet. It has been amazing. Decreased pain, inflammation, bruising, and most of all decreased size, which I didn’t think was possible. Even my skin dimpling has decreased significantly. I also know Dr SEO is also on carnivore. I’ve had lipoedema for 28years, and carnivore is the only strategy that has made any significant change in my legs and buttocks

Totally agree went carnivore in Spring 2022 and for the first five months lost about 7lb a month and down to size 14 which I have not been since the 1970’s. For me giving up sugar and gluten was key. My hips and thighs were always two sizes bigger than my hips. It all just melted away and I was never hungry. Also lifelong clinical depression resolved and other inflammatory conditions. Win win win. Sad though so late as Im in my sixties…… Great for young people to know what we did not. I feel like Im in my 30’s! Enjoy

~28 min mark - that’s where the “persuade you to eat healthy & exercise” starts, in case you’ve been waiting for it. I just found out about this disorder in the context it was presented here, but I have had success with these techniques I’ve tried: - Cold Showers (don’t if you have heart problems or breathing difficulty) - Fasting (intermittent & long-term) - Self lymph massage (Book of Lymph) - Self massage for fascia release (esp in high-fat areas) - Foam Roller - Nutritional Therapy (learn it yourself) - “Body shaking” (learn to shake out everything on your body like a belly dancer or a wet dog, do this multiple times a day) - Breath Work - Graphing mood, pain, focus sleep, and factors which influence them Here’s what hasn’t worked for me: - Eat lots of fruits and veggies - Exercise - Walk a lot - Avoid fat - High carb diet - Low carb diet - Calorie Restricted diet - Food diary - Therapy - Motivational and inspirational content I realized my problems had to do with metabolism and fat distribution. Fasting helped me “train” my metabolism to switch over to using fat for energy. Breath work helped me activate it and decrease strain on my heart (Wim Hof method). I educated myself on vitamins and nutrients, discovered I had non-clinical signs of vitamin deficiencies, and addressed those to great effect. Now I eat a diet that targets what my body needs more of (like vitamin K). I also have had luck with probiotics & learning about electrolytes (esp for fasting). Charting my mood, sleep, energy patterns, and so forth helped me depersonalize successes and failures and turn them into data. I could then use that to see what works and what doesn’t over a long period of time. Lastly, shaking out my body and doing that on a daily basis was a complete game changer. It seems to have “fixed” the issue I’ve had with my knees since highschool. Also back pain, leg pain, stiffness, lack of mobility - it’s has worked for everything. Now I do lymph massages as well and that has made a huge difference. Avoid Gluten. It’s not hype. Here’s what this cheesy, conventional health advice did for me: Exercise made my chronic knee problems worse. Eventually I started to get sick after exercising, and extremely cold. Then I got a few ankle injuries which became so chronic I was afraid to walk down my driveway despite having lost a good deal of weight. Exercise never seemed to have any affect on my weight. At one point I was walking for 10 miles a day. Following the generic advice of “eating healthy” correlated with a number of mysterious health problems, one of which was chronic for two years and undiagnosed by 12 doctors and which had me believing in college that I would have to drop out and was possibly reaching the end of my life, because I couldn’t eat anymore without crippling, paralyzing pain. (Turned out to be low stomach acid). Eating a low fat diet and avoiding meat and dairy cost me in terms of mood stability, focus, memory, sleep, and worsened my symptoms of ADHD & auditory dyslexia. This conventional health advice is harmful to people like me. I had metabolic and circulatory issues and was malnutritioned despite a healthy diet. This crap advice harmed me continuously until I learned to do my own research. It’s not as difficult as I thought. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn, and then I finally was able to put the pieces of the puzzle together. I went to the root of the problem & fixed my metabolic & circulatory issues. I eliminated sources of brain inflammation, cultivated good gut bacteria, and fixed the tension, fluid buildup, and restrictions in my body. I feel healthier now than I did when I was a teenager. I hope what I say here helps someone else, because I’m so frustrated by repeatedly hearing this harmful bias. Fruits and veggies are good for you, yes, and so is exercise - but these are triggers of the metabolism and if your metabolism isnt working properly, they just add to the problem.

Thank you for sharing your story. An anti-inflammatory diet can look different for different people. I resonate with your experience fasting--that was the first thing I tried that actually worked. For shaking do you use a vibration plate? I'm new to the lipedema world (have lived overseas during most of the last ten years in places where this isn't recognized yet) and I'm hearing about vibration a lot. Regarding diet, it seems that people eventually fall firmly into a couple camps for most metabolic problems including lipedema: Keto/LCHF or carnivore and Mediterranean or whole-food plant based (oil free, but not necessarily low fat).

All jeans wearing thin on the inner thigh. Severe pain from any touch with pressure. Hurting having my children or pets crawl on my lap. Minor bumps leaving terrible bruising and bad bruising leaving hardened tissue. Doctors truly don't care/know, saying "diet, exercise, compression....". Thank you for this documentary. I’ve learned so much. I have just one question, which will give rise to many others: is this a 20th century problem? It was discovered in the 40’s during the height on chemicals introduced to our air, food and water. Did this happened during the Industrial Revolution? The Middle Ages? The Roman era? If the lymph system cleans out toxins, we obviously have too many toxins for the body to handle. Fat keeps toxins imprisoned away from organs. If this level of lipedema is not consistent with history, then it seems this in an environmental issue, and we women are showing the physical manifestation of this toxic overload. It might be worth researching if rural areas have the same percentage as urban areas of lipedema.

I wonder if it’s caught early if there might be a hormone treatment that should be explored and researched as treatment to stop the progression. It’s important for insurance to cover treatment of liposuction and manual removal. This gives life back and can halt the progression of joint problems and pain where we don’t move anymore and it gets worse.

For women there is an extra type--Gonadal. This type has dominant ovaries & the same body characteristics as this if obese. Even when at their ideal weight, they have smaller bodies above the waist & larger below the waist. My elderly family member was a Gonadal type & ate a junky diet. This video is comforting yet heartbreaking. I believe lipedema, like most functions of the body are caused by an out of sync thyroid. I am going for my first compression test in a few days. When my feet were swelling every day, I knew something bad was happening. I've been overweight most of my life, so this disease explains most of my diet failures. 🙁

Very interesting. Could it be that something - gluten, refined seed oils that harden & oxidise when heated, or some other factor - is clogging the lymphatic system so much over time that the fluids & toxins are forced out of the lymph as a not very helpful alternative?

Just over three years ago I had surgery for a bilateral torn meniscus and after the surgery my doctor called my daughter to let her know how the surgery went and he also told her I have lymphedema. He never mentioned it to me. I’m not sure I have it although my legs are pretty heavy, but when I lose weight I lose weight in my legs, and they don’t hurt and don’t easily bruise.

A carnivore diet seems to be working for alot of people - however specialists says that it has to be grass or organic fed as the hormones in grain fed can have a negative effect. Carnivore is extreme - I can’t stick to that long term but when I have went carnivore the results for me have been almost instant (two weeks and upper thighs pockets of lipedema maybe 60% improved. Also feeling amazing full of energy and none of that heavy feeling in limbs. Again it isn’t for everyone and can be challenging to stick to

My body started hanging after a traumatic event. Ever since, I've been putting on weight and not even keto, carni or fasting helped much. I felt better yes, but couldn't shed weight. I especially have a swollen belly, it feels hard as if it were full of air all the time, and around the belly button the fat is nodular. So I'm starting to wonder if it could be an early stage of this. But I 've had this problem for like 15 years and I just constantly stay at around 30 kg over my previous weight, and it stays there.

Lipedema is triggered and exacerbated by female hormones, which is why it affects women more often than men. Triggers for this condition include female puberty, during which progesterone is released in greater quantities, as well as, for example, pregnancy. For me, Metformin has restored the balance of my hormones, and my lipedema has drastically improved. While the connective tissue may not improve naturally, it is possible to reduce the fat. I was diagnosed with lipedema five years ago and gained 10 kg rapidly after pregnancy, even though I returned to my very active lifestyle quite quickly. I have now lost 20 kg with the medication and am happy to report that the lipedema has receded. There is no longer as much fluid accumulation in the tissue, and I have hardly any pain. The fact is, with lipedema, losing weight is not easy, as I couldn't do it back then either. You practically have to fight for every kilogram. However, the quality of life is completely different, more beautiful and active when you no longer have to carry around the excess weight and when pain doesn't hold you back from moving.

It's funny you question collagen. I live a very active and healthy lifestyle and weight between 60-62kg (my heaviest I was 75kg 7 years ago). I follow a clean and gluten free diet and train 5-6x a week at the gym. For the last 6 months I've been taking a supplement called JS Health which is to promote hair growth. It's main ingredient is sea kelp which contains collage. I've noticed my legs are bigger and more bumpier and I'm getting pain which I'd never had before and I'm 2-3kgs heavier. I said to myself I swear it's these tablets. I have 10 tablets left. I think I'm going to stop taking them now. I have a specialist appointment next week to hopefully get a diagnosis and liposuction on my legs. I think I'm stage 2.

However, upon entering menopause I noticed that I can’t reduce the size of my legs. I eat keto/carnivore and exercise but there hasn’t been much change in my legs. It all of a sudden occurred to me that maybe collagen has something to do with it.

My daughter gets really angry when doctors take one look at me and rather than check to see what might be wrong they say wow because you're fat.... It really gets her angry in the worst thing is most doctors they don't look no matter what you tell them I literally took my daughter to an endocrinologist and said look my teenage daughter has stretch marks her legs are getting bigger there's something wrong here... And the doctor refused to listen because my daughter was relatively thin at that time and have been working out so she had a six-pack only her legs and hips were getting bigger... And she red purple stretch marks to prove it... I wish there were doctors who didn't judge and just looked at the patient look at the situation did the test try to figure out what the heck is wrong with my patient instead of I know what it must be it must be.... Fill in the blank of their pre-existing assumptions... Fat is always número uno on that list.

The way you are eating may not be right. Have you ever had a test to see which foods cause you inflammation? Eating right can look very different for each individual - this is the issue. Some will flare up and be totally inflamed and have extreme lymph issues eating vegetables tomatoes etc and need to eat only keto. For some keto won’t work. If you haven’t already get tested - your excellent diet could be the root cause - even if you are doing everything right. For years we were told to eat large amount of carbs and low fat and that was ‘right’ - for some this can be right. For others it can take away mobility. There is no one cure for all and there is no universal right diet. When I was vegetarian and eating right I was never as inflamed bloated with fluid and in constant pain with inflammation. When I went keto ALL of that went away. This is an issue for those who do not eat meat for moral reasons. I now have a balance and include some carbs which I can tolerate. There is no one right way.

@@giatasha2181 Thank you so much for writing this! I was tested years ago but have fallen apart in the past two years. Extreme stress, loss of mobility all together, skin that hurts and scratches easily, nausea every single time I eat which causes me to stop about five bites in. Nothing I eat makes me feel good. I lost my primary care doctor five months ago and haven't been able to find a new one yet. There is a shortage of doctors in my area and as a result, the ones that are here are booking six months out. I have an appointment in August. I kept telling my former PCP that I felt swollen, filled with fluid, not fat. I took notes from your comment and will ask professionals until someone helps me. I am ready to give up. The depression at this point is killing me.

@@Sunnybrook-69 I am sorry to read that and maybe it is worth you considering if keto is worth a try. I know for me my response to many many vegetables and starches and gluten is appauling. It got to the stage for me where I was struggling to get out of bed in the morning due to pain on hips legs wrists etc. within a week of keto my symptoms dramatically improved. When I stuck to carnivore for six weeks I was literally symptomless. I am not saying that it is for everyone but it sounds like anything is worth a try for you and whatever is happening now with you is not working. It may not be totally down to your diet but you will never know if you don’t change and stick to that change for a good few weeks. Not medical advise and doctors are not keen to suggest full carnivore but many many including the people that produced this video are in agreement that the evidence shows for some people keto is super effective. Don’t loose hope. But it sounds like radical change is needed and whatever that radical change is you can do it.

I have this sort of problem with fat on my body; but, it is not my legs. It's my abdomen. I got up to well over 400 lbs. Not sure how high but over 435 lbs and I believe over 475 lbs while exercising and mostly eating right, but living in a very stressful state that got increased in stressed by moving into a bad apartment building where people picked on me calling me "fat bitch" (not at me but in my hearing), broke into my apartment and smoked much, much pot (which I am highly allergic to) . When I moved in I weighed about 240 lbs and I lived there less than 3 months before I was over 400 lbs even though I increased my exercise a lot, living upstairs and having to walk to get groceries (or anything else) and I swam in the pool when I could. Anyway ... I moved. I got less stressed for a while and then I got stressed in the right way, where I had to start eating more vegetables and starches than anything else as that was what was affordable. I lost down to 240 lbs but during that time my belly only changed about two inches total, and it went back up to where it had been before I lost any weight. So, that's at least 200 lbs lost, maybe more like 300 lbs, and my belly remained fat. I learned, in the last year or so, that I am genetically predisposed to needing a higher starch, very low fat diet and that I have some serious intolerances to food. It was supposed to tell me allergens to basic things but it did not, unfortunately. Well, to some things, but not to food things. The closest it came was to say that I might have a genetic predisposition to be allergic to wheat or have an intolerance. The other DNA test showed no intolerance to wheat but a great deal of intolerance of apples, almonds, beef and sheep and their meats. I have been trying to learn enough, since, to convince myself to try again as there has seemed, so far, to be no point. If I can't lose the weight on my belly and get my cortisol in order, what happens is that I exercise and gain muscle, then a stressor happens to which I overreact (now), and then my muscle gained gets broken down, turned into fat and put on my belly. So, even though it is not legs or that area, since I have a cuff of abdominal fat and another cuff of upper back fat, I am hoping this video will give me a solid clue or two. Either way, thank you for posting it!
