My own theory is that the Nowhere is, in fact, shaped by imagination. At least to some degree. The Ferryman believes he is giving the children a way out, and for some of them, he might do. But these children, already carrying scars, reflect their own distorted memories of their past life into their immediate surroundings. I have ideas about how each child lived before they entered the Nowhere, based on things we learn about them in their earliest timeline appearances (so LN2 overrides LN1). Six was a neglected child who had to fight for every scrap of food and was often ignored, and when she 'grows up', she is able to eat as much as she wants and has the attention of everyone around her. Mono grew up in an abusive household where the TV was a major factor, probably as a distraction to the adults who hurt him, but also likely to be a reason to hurt him if he were to disrupt viewing in any way - he knows that the TV and its signal have significant power over people and was able to manipulate the signals within this imagination-fueled space. My guestimate for Low and Alone is that they grew up in a war-torn area, considering they're the only children who have companions at the time of earliest appearance, they both have some ability to protect themselves, and there are themes of large and dangerous machines in the trailer that could be military machinery.

Oh i love this idea and agree, it interesting how the characters are tied to the enviroments which are a reflection of their trauma. Becoming what you fear m/ the abused becones the abuser is such a strong message

I support a similar theory, but more in the sense that each area is made of the collective memories and perceptions of the children who get brought to The Nowhere, with each area centered around a common childhood fear of the real world, warped and exaggerated by dream logic. The Maw is of course starvation, be it from food insecurity or food being withheld as a punishment; I also think a lot of the setpieces, decor, and characters are based on a child's perception of real world events, such as the tall man's hanging, the deformed pictures on the lady's walls, and the granny herself. The Pale City, aside from being this warped fear perception of a city, is also a manifestation of adults neglecting children in favor of their own base desires, like as you mentioned watching TV and getting angry if disturbed. The School and The Hospital, despite being in The Pale City, are distinct in their representation, and is meant to be manifestations of the fears a child would have of such institutes. The Wilderness works in a similar way, being a manifestation of a child's fear of the wild; dangerous, feral animals, a creepy hunter who might chase you down, and so on.

I think little nightmares also tells you that you become what you fear/hate (for example, Mono becoming the thin man).

i dunno… i think thats just a one-off scenario RK did not hate/fear the nomes im super sure. And six doesn’t really show much fear towards things, so I don’t know what that would lead six to be.

I believe LN was originally going to be about symbolism whether that be about world war, experiments, growing up, fears, loss of innocence.... But since the release of Sounds of nightmares and LN3 coming. I think it's just starting to have it's own story and lore.

There is DEFINITELY a more apparent through-line now that SoN has come out. I gotta say though, I loved the idea telling the story in the completely opposite way: No visuals and only dialogue.

Have you ever had a trauma or regretful decision you wish you could reverse, but of course you can't, because it made you who you are, for better or for worse? That is encapsulated in the struggle against the Thinman and Mono. The Thin Man keeps trying to stop Mono, but he simply can't. It unmakes him. Thus the two of them are caught in a cycle of pain, torment, and regret, forced to continuously relive their trauma.

@@PlanetDrewpiter Well _⛲_ We had the 'Monster Mono' alternate universe from Boss Artwork animations. That was basically a 'What if the thinman would've kidnapped Mono instead of Six'. But on the official game I strongly believe the loop is imposible to broke since the existence of the thinman itself proves the thinman before it did the same mistake to chase, try and manage to kidnap Six. So that thinman is also the proof of the ex thinman doing the same and so long to infinite. If you doubt the thinman actually being Mono, then my argument is how he didn't killed Six. He brought her on a room with a music box (identical with the one Mono saw Six with first) while we saw other glitchy kids like Shadow Six, but we never met those kids on the tower. Implying the thinman killed them, but he spared Six, only Six.

Hey btw, they changed the name "Hunger" because if you Google: "Hunger game" then the main results are the book and movie series. And in order to market the game a change was made. Although I do prefer Little Nightmares.

its kinda silly when game developers make choices like that based on that factor because, like, there's lots of ways to search for a game. lotsa keywords. like using the developer as a keyword, or a character, or a genre, etc. (i guess theyre both dystopian lol) But yeah Little Nightmares has a little more thought behind it xP

What you mentioned about the fluidity of time makes a lot of sense because one of the theories I’ve seen is that little nightmares 2 actually happens before little nightmares 1. We have Mono finding the yellow raincoat and giving it to Six and then with the secret ending, Six meets shadow Six who points to a flyer about the Maw and then her stomach growls before the scene fades to black.

I thought ”little nighmares” refered to the children. If a child is a ”nightmare”, she behaves badly and runs away. The monsters could see Six as a ”little nightmare” to their lives.

I like the idea of the nowhere as an alternate world; where all the small fears and vices of humanity are made manifest and seek to control us. The monsters in this world could be both victims and perpetuators of this cycle. The Lady's Vanity, The Teacher's need for control, The Doctor's focus on fixing his patients etc. The flesh monster in the tower could very much embody the social desire to fit in, a literal monolith of eyes hiding itself and assimilating any viewers into its body. But that's just my theory anyway.

What I love about this game is how deep it actually is. And that one thing can have multiple meanings. A lot of what you said are things I’ve thought about. But you did bring out other interesting perspectives too.

A very well made video! I love focusing on the psychological themes and meanings. The abused becomes the abuser and/or you become what you fear is scary. Especially seeing the progression. David is such a great creator, i like that he chose to not just say 'this meabs this and thats it' instead opening it up for theories

I STILL STRONGLY BELIEVE SIX ISNT THE LADY!!! Sure, she might be the _next_ lady, but the two characters aren’t the same people. Its things like the Lady’s vanity compared to six not really caring much about looks at all. They are such different people that it just doesnt make any sense.

Fantastic video, this was a TREAT for me, and I'm ALWAYS up for Little Nightmares discussions! The world of Nowhere and Little Nightmares is so fascinating to me with so many possibilities to explore, including many themes and symbolism. The amount of depth in all elements of storytelling and design is astounding. A favorite aspect of Little Nightmares for me has been the vagueness and how it leaves so much to your imagination. I love hearing all kinds of viewpoints of events, characters, etc and many people are able to express their creative interpretations through excellent art. My views and interpretations on Little Nightmares constantly change and it never gets old. The vastness of possibilities and different perspectives makes the franchise feel so much bigger to me. Finding new symbolism or diving deeper into Little Nightmares's themes is always fun, and sometimes I make my own personal connections or symbolism whether it was intended or not. I like to think that Noone calls the Ferryman the Candleman not just because he looks like a melting candle but because he's like a light that she's drawn to, thinking back to her moth analogy. But fire burns :')

Looking back at little nightmares,I honestly thought it was a game about facing your fears when I first found it,but seeing it developing its own lore has given me a new perspective on it... As what the people in the comments mentioned,the game does have a few factors indicating 'The abused becomes the abuser','Loss of Innocence','General Fear','Loss',etc. And I completley agree with everyone here,the video and the comments explained LN to me in a way I never thought about... And now,I have so many 'What Ifs' in my head,spiraling about what could've happened,like 'What if the Thin Man never left his domain and simply watched Mono and Six's journey to escape the city' or 'What if Six never ate the Nome (Runaway Kid) or even 'What if the girl in VLN never bothered to save Six' Idk,my head's ging nuts with all these what ifs and theories,but they're pretty cool to think about

Little nightmares name could also mean little things in life, that are a nightmare if you think about it. Such as people eating too much and being greedy, while others are starving. Or little things like consuming too much media, watching tv as if we are under a spell, even in the bathroom, and the shower and the bath. Little things that are kinda horrifying when we think about it, like a nightmare 🤔

I think little nightmares is an imaginative world from the eyes of childen, but not just any children, children from world war 2 and how they see the war themselves. For example, the pale city represents Germany and how the people under the Third Reich are brainwashed from the properganda told to them by the tvs (and the Thin Man could then represent H***er himself). And the maw represents Japan as the maw is very Japanese inspired and the children could symbolise the poor people who tried to escape the Japanese during the war but never escaped. And Six & Mono would represent the western powers, specifically America and the Soviet Union as they try to stop the pale city and maw once and for all (this explains why the viewers chase and kill Mono and Six as in 1945 the German civillians fought against the western powers to defend the fatherland) ,but in the end Six betrayed Mono showing the end of world war 2 and the start of the cold war.

What if the eyes were ancient race of aliens and altered the world to create a loop 🧐 Edit: also remember the little easter egg map in chess room in LN2, it has lot of eyes drawn on it. Does that mean that the eyes are underground and cover the whole world, plus after getting dropped by Six at the end we ended up on a flat land of flesh if that means they are literally everywhere. Then that explains a lot, but also very disturbing.😰

When talking about this game people use the terms "childhood fears", escapism etc. I would take it up a notch and call it *childhood abuse* and *dissociation.* a childhood fear to me is being afraid of the dark, or clowns etc. this game goes deeper. It depicts situations that children should be safe but aren't. Care centers, schools, teachers, janitors etc. It shows how trauma influences a child, how hard it is to escape from them, and even if you survive (which many don't) it changes you. How abused children grow up to continue the cycle of abuse. From the podcast we learn that the targets are children in vulnerable situations, who might be suffering in real life. (noone faced bullying and medical trauma). Studies have shown traumatised people are more likely to be abused again in the future.

*TRIGGER WARNING* I know this maybe a very dark theory, but as a 36 year old woman STILL recovering from childhood abuse and neglect-I couldn’t help but cry through most of the first game. Being a child your taught that if you ever need help, find an adult. A teacher, parent, officer-you’re taught to believe they will keep you safe or help you. But when you’re abused as a child, be it a stranger or worse someone close to you-you grow up fast and are weary. The world gets darker, scarier, but no monsters ever scared me as much as ‘adults’ did, especially my mother and her friends. Realizing that not all are friendly or even have your best interests will change you. To me, that’s all I can think about with the first. The second game, or more importantly 6 and Mono’s bond reminded me of my older sister and I. We were only 2.5 years apart but she WAS my mom essentially. I thought we would be inseparable forever…but I was 11 when she found an opportunity to run away, and she left me behind. I didn’t speak after that for almost 3 years, like I just lost the ability to do so. When we were reunited (I was almost 16), she had been thru 7 foster homes, 3 different facilities for runaways (different kind of abuse) before emancipating herself, finding friends and 3 of them illegally rented an apartment. She was different….changed. She watched out for herself and no one else. We were never close again. When children have no support or safety after abuse, adults become the scariest monsters by far. Sometimes even into adulthood.

I dont really have a theory but i have thinked about the cycles and timeline(you dont have to read this) SPOILER ALERT!!! so it all started with very little nightmares where we play as the girl in the yelliw raincoat who at the end of the fame meets a watery grave and was helping a girl who i believe is Six and helps Six not DIE and at the end Six gets on a raft after failing to repay for the help from the girl in the yellow raincoat then while going there the raincoat is washedup somewhere and put as junk in the pale city while Six was captured by the hunter and got locked in his cabin thats where little nightmares 2 comes in we play as Mono we wake up in the forest with tv's the big bad is the thin man who later we find out is the older version of Mono Mono helps Six and Six collects a raincoat who i believe is the girl in the yellow raincoat's raincoat and Six puts it on and Six and Mono continue there journey and at the end Six betrays Mono andMono sits down on a chair and grows up to be the thin man and now the first little nightmares where we continue the journey of Six where we satisfy hunger and a lot happens my hands hurt so im gonna skip as i think most people played the first game and Six defeats the Lady and grows up to be the Lady waiting for Seven(i guss another version of Six) to continue the cycle after betraying another young version of Mono soon it would be Six's childhood photo on the wall waiting for Seven and so im now done with timeline super-cycle in very little nightmares if the girl in the raincoat didn't save Six Six woupd not grow up to be the Lady in the original game if Six didn't betray Mono Mono would not be the thin man but everything was meant to be that way Seven will be saved by another version of the girl in the yellow raincoat Seven wipl betray another version of Mono Seven will grow up to become the lady in the original game and take Six's place its lile one super-cycle making all the games connected and im not going over the dlc for the og game bc my hands are so tired so yeah im done you dont have to read this like i said😅

My little theory is that six Let go of mono Because the influence of the eyes At the end And if she didn't let go of mono there would be no thin man For the cycle to repeat because mono is doomed to repeat Becoming the thin man over and over Due to the extremely fast Aging effects that the eye Realm has On its chosen victims And the eyes are Just waiting for another victim And the eyes Being in the little nightmare's world And the eyes must have a thin man In order to survive because they hold the world together, they keep the world Alive because if there's no tower there is no world And keeping the universe Alive Because the universe is created by these interdimensional eye beings i guarantee you little nightmares Three is gonna be a completely different world I think the eyes represent Selfishness corruption Death And eternal struggle within In yourself And greed And Half of hunger while six Represent The other half of hunger Also, many people forget about the secret ending With shadow 6 Representing that little nightmares Two is a sequel to the first one And the first game continues Off shortly after the second game And very little nightmares.The mobile game is the Grand finale of Of Six,s Story The shadow basically Hinting that the first game is the second game And the second game is the first game And obviously the third one is the very little nightmares is the mobile game
