I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Ride The Lightning because that record was my first exposure to Metallica. The weird part is that happened in ‘93; I was 10. The Black Album had already been out for two years, but I hadn’t discovered heavy music yet. At the time, I was listening to Aerosmith, Green Day, and the Offspring. I thought that was heavy. Then a kid in my fourth grade class brought Ride The Lightning into our weekly music class, and he played For Whom the Bell Tolls. It blew me away. I had no idea music could sound like that. It was over from there. I immediately went and bought Ride the Lightning, The Black Album, and …And Justice For All. Personally, I have to say Orion. The reason I think so highly of Orion in particular is because it's so different from the rest of Metallica's catalog. It's still heavy but the melodies are technical and beautiful, it's easily the best bass performance we get from a Metallica song, and Lars's drumming is just the cherry on top. No lyrics even required, just a breathtaking instrumental and a testament to the musical prowess of Cliff Burton. I truly think it was their masterpiece song from their masterpiece album.
