Spot metering is how you get crisp shots of stuff at night like the moon. I just bought a camera 2 days ago and metering might be the easiest fix to most focusing issues you have depending on lighting. Literally my first week of photography but already getting the flow of it!
@global001

The correct mode depends on the lighting environment. Use spot when the background is either too bright or dark for the subject to be exposed correctly.
@annoholics

Just use your exposure compensation dial for that. Much easier and gives the best results to me. You can combine it with zebras so you get a warning when you are overexposing but you can just as well look at the histogram. When there is minimal action you can of course also use HDR.
@michaelbankart916
@michaelbankart916 Жыл бұрын
@@annoholics I use both personally, but the spot metering is sometimes a lot better. I shoot mostly wildlife and if the subject and background lighting are changing as the subject moves, spot metering ensures i keep the subject correctly exposed. But all is situational and both are useful at the right time.
@annoholics
@annoholics Жыл бұрын
@@michaelbankart916 The problem I have with spot metering is that it looks just at a spot. If that spot is representative for the whole subject that you like to photograph then everything is fine. However, if you are photographing a black and white bird then it makes a huge difference if your spot is on a white feather or a black feather. Sinds the bird is moving, it might change all the time. As long as enough detail is stil visible in the whites and the blacks, then you can do a lot in the editing. That is why I recommend watching the histogram and the picture overall and adjust the mistakes the camera makes with the compensation dial.

@@annoholicsIn Sony cameras we can change the size of the spot metering setting. But my Canon 200D doesn't have it, it just meters wherever my Dual Pixel AF area follows. For events and concerts it still serves well because it exposes the subject perfectly, and the background is pretty much recoverable. But in videos, I find Multi Metering is the best because everyone exposes on multi mode when shooting Log.

I have a Canon 90D, and can actually say I was insanely impressed with its out of box capabilities. I often find that I have to do very little tweaking to settings when I want to get the kind of shot I’m looking for. ISO is really the only thing that makes or breaks the photo if it’s not used right. But to be fair I also have 2 lenses that equal about as much as the camera does themselves so they’re also doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Love the tips though. I always find myself exploring and figuring out new things when I see something I haven’t seen before in your video.

You should absolutely play around with your metering setting. It depends on what you're trying to shoot. If you're trying to shoot the moon, for example, you'd want spot metering to prioritize the exposure of the moon. Taking a portrait shot with a bright background, you might want to use an off center spot meter, depending on your composition. In fact, you should play around with every setting on your camera. The more familiar you are with your gear, the better. If you want to improve, get out of your comfort zone.

For example, i usually shot portraits and animals in spot metering while i prefer to use matrix for landscapes and similar. Never had a need to change it wih mirrorless. I just guesstimate the light value of the scene that I am intending to photograph and leave the camera on evaluative metering. I dial in the guesstimated settings in full manual and then look into the EVF and see how under or overexposed the scene is. This method has helped me guess exposure in most scenarios, and I am usually within 2/3rds of a stop. Sometimes I like to shoot with zonefocusing and aperture priority, so I will use exposure comp for exposure control. In this case, using evaluative metering (or center-weighted) is the most practical, in my-opinion if you are using zone-focusing for quick compositions. Since you don't have to worry about setting up focus, you can dial-in your exp. comp before you even bring up the camera to view. This works well with my fuji cameras, as they have purpose-built dials for these controls.

I used to "touch" metering a lot. Everyone should learn how the different modes work. Nowadays, however, with simulated exposure in the viewfinder of mirrorless cameras, it's a game changer. Look in the viewfinder, dial the exposure up or down until you see what you want, and press the button. It's almost cheating! It is cheating! I hope everyone still learns about exposure, reciprocity, spot mode, center weighted averaging, 18% gray etc. It's important to know why something works, not just that it does. Certainly understanding the relationship between aperture and shutter speed to depth of field and freezing or blurring action are vital, but exposure preview frees the photographer to concentrate on composition and creating the best image possible.
