Michael Scott envisions his employees as his family, more than his friends. As seen in season 7, I believe Episode 14, Erin, the receptionist who takes Pam's position, is a former foster child, and wants Michael's approval in her romantic relationship. Michael asks, "Why are you asking me? I'm not your dad", to which Erin responds in silence and sadness. Michael takes the queue and responds by scolding her, saying, "You are forbidden to see that boy!" He is somehow lonely for family. Thanks, Dr. Grande!

Also the reluctance of firing anyone. He would do practically anything to avoid having to fire someone. If he wouldn't care or be indifferent, he would just pick someone. Michael however stalls, evades, comes up excuses, tries to find ways to keep employees, literally anything. This signifies the importance of the employees to him, more than just regular employees.

I remember Michael Scott once said he acts silly to lighten the tension in situations. I think he’s secretly brilliant in some situations. He let the air out of everyone’s tires when they merged with Stanford so the workers would be upset with him and not each other. He made Ryan move to the annex to be by Kelly - probably as punishment. His branch is weirdly successful and nobody ever leaves (unless they Transfer).

I always figured Michael had ADHD. Speaking from experience, when you're an extremely hyperactive and inattentive kid others tend to find you to be annoying, which makes it hard to form or maintain friendships. If the symptoms persist into adulthood it might be hard to focus at work leading to lack of productivity and frequent distraction. On the other hand ADHD can make someone thrive in a job like sales because the energetic personality can be charming at times, and the meeting new people on a regular basis makes the job present novelty on a regular basis to keep someone engaged. Hence why Michael might have been one of the best salesmen, but is not well suited for being a manager of an office. Plus the lack of socializing growing up could result in poor social skills in regards to empathy or 'reading a room'.

@kateashby3066 Жыл бұрын
Really good point. Michael is almost an exact mirror of my 14 year old ADHD self (but I’m a woman). I just realized what makes Michael funny to watch as opposed to annoying is that he doesn’t have those social boundaries and can’t pick up on a social cue to save his life. ADHD adults aren’t usually THIS socially inept. So it really does feel like the writers were trying to emulate a kid with ADHD rather than an adult with ADHD 😂. Add to that some low self esteem and thus, overcompensation for it, and we have MS!
@DeyvsonMoutinhoCaliman4 жыл бұрын
I think he has a lot of empathy. He went to great lengths to never fire any employee, he said "here we only hire people, we never fire people", he almost never feels envy, is always happy for his coworkers. What he lacks is the ability to get social cues, he says things that sound mean, but his heart is very good.

Interesting! I really enjoyed the trait breakdown with the facet breakdown, too. As you were going through his personality profile, I noticed a fair amount of characteristics that would seem to fit with ADHD, too. He has difficulty completing tasks that don't interest him while focusing intensely on things that do. I think one could argue that he even distracts others to prevent being forced to do things he's not interested in, including tasks that require a high level of focus. He struggles with following through on things. He has serious problems with impulse control, most often seen in his lack of filter in conversation. He interrupts people, and he always has to do things first because he can't wait his turn. The high affective empathy/low cognitive empathy combination is more common in autism than ADHD, to be fair. And again, this one isn't a symptom criterion for ADHD, but he has a strong case of what the ADHD community refers to as "rejection sensitive dysphoria," meaning that when he perceives that he is being rejected, he experiences extremely strong negative emotions. Also, it's been a while since I watched the show, but I think there's a few times when he picks up a hobby, gets really into it, and it's gone again by the next episode, e.g. he goes on vacation and when he comes back, he's playing a steel drum. The lack of insight also fits!

If anything, Michael Scott is a blatant case of ADHD (which is a neurological condition, not a personality disorder) and I think the series has been written with that in mind. I remember an episode when Michael is trying to avoid taking responsibility for a situation, says he doesn't know why it happened, and Dwight behind him exclaims "INATTENTION TO DETAIL AND POOR MEMORY". I had growing suspicion since the beginning, but this line there, to me, confirmed that the authors really thought of Michael as having ADHD. I think ADHD and narcissism - or at least narcissistic traits - can easily overlap or be confused with each other. ADHD traits are often misinterpreted as manifestation of psychological issues, AND is also a risk factor for personality disorders in general and various psychological comorbidities. If some traits can be better explained by a neurologic condition such as ADHD, then they can't be used to diagnose a full blown narcissistic personality disorder. But I can easily imagine how one can pass as narcissistic when they have ADHD. Michael Scott is notorious for a couple of things that point to ADHD if you think of it. Has difficulty refraining from impulsive and extreme decisions, often fails to assess the safety of his plans and inadvertently puts himself and others in danger. Fails to assess other people's feelings and state of mind, fails to listen, has experienced rejection (and I think bullying is also suggested) as a kid, has poor social skills. Is forgetful, dreamy, clearly has a creative mind. Easily bored - making a show of everything, being a compulsive joker, can be an instinctive strategy to sustain his own mental arousal, attention and enthusiasm. In general, he has trouble "staying on track". Experiences extreme emotions and has trouble self soothing, self regulating, refraining from showing these emotions or acting upon them. Is basically emotionally immature. Has poor self assessment, fails to notice his own shortcomings, overestimates his abilities. Is a bad planner and only functions thanks to a lot of "scaffolding" (assistant, receptionist...). Has poor memory, and mixed with occasional excess of enthusiasm, makes "feel good" promises that he later finds himself unable to keep. Also LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF FIDGET TOYS ON THAT DESK. Now, ADHD can explain a fair share of what may seem like self-centeredness, impulsivity and irresponsibility, *but* there are still toxic behaviors in a character like Michael Scott that can be seen as narcissistic traits. When he choses to lie or hide the truth to get what he wants or avoid trouble, when he choses to blame someone else for something that is his fault (even when he knows it), when he puts others down to make himself look good, and when he disregards boundaries in general, these are *choices* that ADHD alone can't explain. They might not be enough to diagnose a bona fide personality disorder, but they're definitely *not* something you could blame on his hypothetical ADHD either. ADHD impairs some cognitive abilities, it makes you "clumsy" if you will, but not ill-intentioned, manipulative or purposefully toxic like narcissism. So Iong story short, I see Michael as someone with ADHD and *some* narcissistic traits.

I think Michael could also have ADHD. He's very impulsive, lacks focus (although we see he can hyperfocus on things he enjoys like being a salesman) is hyperactive, and has other symptoms. Many of his behaviours could be explained by this

He's a leo sun. So yes, he wants to be center of attention, his moon sign is Pisces which means he's very intuitive and empathetic and his rising sign is virgo. So he can be critical of himself and others. U need to study astrology. There is nothing wrong w him. He has Pisces in his 6th house of health which states he'll have addiction to alcohol and pills. Also having a moon in Pisces means his father abandoned him during childhood. So he does have abandonment issues.

i LOVE these kinds of videos where fictional characters are analysed and diagnosed!! very interesting to watch. Even though its fictional characters from tv shows and movies its quite interesting because its fun and educational at the same time. Micheal Scott is a good example of the tarot card "the fool" archtype and an unintentional troll. i love the situations he gets into and find alot of his childish immature offensive behavior to be hilarious. He does seem really naive and dumb at times like shouting out the word "bankruptcy" thinking thats how one declares bankruptcy, or like when he asked "how do i get youtube to come out and record me" but its like a childlike innocence. He's really just a big kid and a child at heart. He wants everyone to have fun and to be happy and have a good time and wants to be friends with (almost) everyone. He always wants fun and i love how non serious he is at times and can have a laugh at really serious intense moments when in situations like almost getting fired or in trouble with his bosses. At times though he is very immature and seems entirely oblivious to real dangers in the world around him and seems to have little to no awareness at all. Hes selfish in a very childish way at times too. He gets on good with kids too and i think thats because mentally he still is one himself lol. He soo hates toby because toby is very plain and boring and serious which is no fun to mike at all. He keeps excluding toby from things in a child like way and calls him corporate. He looks at everyone else in the workplace as his friends or as his family. He even kind of almost adopted ryan as his son, not litrelly but micheal looked at ryan like he was a son and loves him for some odd reason. Even went out of his way to spend extra and bought him the eye pod mp3 music thingy in a christmas episode which ended up going to someone else because of some office christmas gift swapping party game. Micheal is way too trusting at times and irresponsible. i think hed rather his people have fun rather than actually getting their work done. easy job i would love to come and work for him. easy monies all day long. one of the most child like things i remember him doing was trying to escape his problems by running away and being avoided of serious issues that need addressing, or that episode where he was gonna run away from home by getting the train out of town. i think was because of bankruptcy or debt or jan or something cant entirely remember. Speaking of which he lets people use him and even fell victim to a pyramid scheme until others in the office had pointed it out AFTER he did a presentation and tried getting them on board it. i love the whole "thats what she said" thing and use it almost everyday, i had forgotten it was him it came from till i just heard you mention it in the video. i think he would be a really bad parent but an amazing fun uncle. i love his inappropriateness and blatant offensivesness when trying to make a joke and have a laugh with no real malicious intent behind it but sometimes he goes too far which lands him in trouble and doesnt know when to stop at times. i respect the whole character thing he does when hes trying to teach something because it shows that hes trying to make learning fun for others but the problem is hes not teaching a bunch of kids with little attention spans but actually hes a boss teaching adults in an office setting. As boss he should be a bit more serious and setting a better example of being a good leadership role and setting realistic goals that he wants people to work towards and actually accomplish. Enforcing Responsibilities basically while at the same time being a good hard working leader. Thanks for reading this far to anyone who has!

This comment comes a year too late, and I am not at all qualified to say this with any sort of certainty, but I've always wondered if, perhaps, Michael Scott has Asperger's--a loner whether he wants to be or not, a strong disconnect with social cues (he doesn't realize when he's being offensive and misinterprets everyone around him), and a valiant (and usually over-reaching) attempt to mask himself as "normal". Greatly enjoyed the video and the analysis! Thanks :)

OMG...I am a massive Office geek...was walking my dogs this morning and thinking about what kind of a narcissist Michael Scott could be called (Benign Narcissist? Loveable Narcissist?) and what you would say about his behavior...and you've done it!!! So happy to find this!!!
@MelissaSlayton1115 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason why I think the office was such a successful show is because of the empathy it portrays characters with, who are in no way typical suave, Hollywood camera ready types. NPD is very demonized because of its negative effects. If you take a realistic look at the show, you do see some pretty brutal effects of Michael’s self absorption. That being said, you also see an authentic human being who has a limited world view but at the end of the day still has basic human emotions like love. While I am the first person to encourage people to not be in denial about the unhealthy affects of narcissism, I think a lot of educators miss the mark in their attempt to portray narcissists as superhuman monsters. This is much more the reality. A difficult person who demands attention. A completely self absorbed person who we get along with best with when we we treat them like a child. Even though Michael Scott is very much preoccupied with being the center of attention, I would consider him a covert/vulnerable narcissist because his need to be admired is driven through vulnerability much more than power. Covert narcissists can really idealize the mores of society and this includes his loyalty to the company and friends. However there is a child-like aspect to this, and it is inconsistent in times when it clashes with his narcissism. Narcissists to me are parasitic more than sadistic. Michael Scott has little malice, but he completely drains people mainly through being annoying and dominating and self-absorbed. The absence of malice, and child like behavior, are what can make narcissism so hard to recognize. I also feel that he is incredibly manipulative. When confronted with a boundary he escalates the situation, throws a bunch of word salad around, and usually deludes himself that he is right and other people aren’t and doesn’t usually change his behavior based on the discomfort of others. I also don’t feel like he truly has cognitive empathy. He is very sentimental, but to me it reflects the fantasy he wants to have of the situation at the moment (world’s best boss). I felt like he was high on the fantasy component. Like most people do, I care about him as a character. However, I think that like a covert narcissist would, he charms people with his vulnerability and quirkiness. We dismiss his social faux pas as a lack of awareness; this, to me, is the most problematic thing. I know people with autism or ADHD who, if you tell them that they are inadvertently showing a lack of awareness, are deeply self reflective and apologetic about it. Whereas the way I begin to suspect a narcissist is that their world view would collapse if they accepted this, so you will never get anywhere with feedback. Though we laugh at Michael Scott and are charmed at his moments of sincerity, the way we are with children, I think this show does bring up important lessons. While he is funny to the viewer, we have to think about the experience that, say, a child might have being raised by him. Having so little boundaries and constantly having to prop up someone’s ego while you are trying to form your own sense of identity would be incredibly toxic. At the end of the day, people with NPD have a mental health issue and there is no use in stigmatizing mental health. I think that the show gives us a good example that beneath the exterior of a narcissist there is someone who does have their good moments and deserves love yet needs excessive boundaries. It really draws attention to a blind spot in society. We can’t stand to think that he’s a narcissist because we care about him. This is the reality of mental illness and personality disorders. It doesn’t always look like the bad guy in a horror movie. It’s a flawed, complex, real person with deep self esteem issues, capable of love. And it’s up to us to be aware of the reality of it and learn how to communicate in these situations...And at the end of the day to laugh at ourselves.

Very thorough analysis as always, Doctor. Spot on. The first fictional character I thought of that I'd love to see an analysis of is Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate. She's rife with disorders. But given that it's an older movie, I'm not sure the bulk of your audience would know much about it. Either way it'd be interesting!

My theory: Undiagnosed ADHD with a hyperative component. Reason: Due to Michael Scott's age this would make sense - his childhood/teen years were most likely during the 1970's -1980's where ADHD was not as well know as it is today. Kids with this were seen as not being disciplined enough by their parents, were lazy or not very smart. As a result, a lot of his personality traits and his interactions with others as an adult can be coping mechanisms that he developed to help compensate for his low self-esteem. For example, as a child, Michael may have gotten in trouble often in school for his inability to concentrate during class. His teachers may have called him out in front of his peers for his behavior which then would have made him feel embarrassed and ridiculed. For his challenge to fully experience empathy - this could be due to an immaturity component perhaps? His loneliness - he may have had difficulty making friends as a child because of his social awkwardness which clearly shows through as an adult. His need to build himself up as a great person - again, a coping mechanism. Became a manager because he was the top salesperson - coping mechanism for his low self-esteem. He found something that he was really good at doing which made him feel confident enough to compete against his peers and win. He was probably the most competitive against his ownself. This be an example of hypefocusing. Just my $0.02. Thanks! :)

Michael has ASD (autism, which would be considered "high functioning," or what used to be called Aspergers) and ADHD. Most of the symptoms you spoke about can be explained with these neurological diagnoses. It is extremely common for mental health practitioners across the board to misdiagnose people with ASD as having NPD or BPD due to the lack of education on autism in the mental health world and the similar appearance of certain behaviours. However, the reasons and intentions behind the behaviours are what differentiate between ASD and NPD. As ADHD and ASD are not mental illnesses but neurological syndromes, Michael is not mentally ill in this way. If I had to diagnose a mental illness for Michael I would say he has PTSD, the symptoms of which are displayed sparingly, yet strongly. Thank you for doing this analysis.

I mean you can’t know that because he is a fictional character. It could by one or the other. And because he’s fictional, he’d have characteristics that contraindicate them too.
