I enjoy the feel of Mister as its own little retro console. It sits under the CRT and next to a bin of old controllers. Through the power of SNAX, i can plug in any controller from the bin and experience almost all of the 80s and 90s home console experiences. For me, the Mister is a perfect friend for a CRT. Im a little younger than most here so i never experienced the 3rd, 4th, or 5th gen consoles growing up. Now i have a perfect recreation of those systems in my home. Since i bought a MiSTer FPGA i havent touched software emulation, i like how seemless it is to switch cores and plug in a different controller and i usually dont even need to change the controls around. It really feels closer to OG hardware than software emulation ever has to be. One test i like to do is beat Ninja Gaiden for the NES, if i can so that it passes the test. Im following the emulation scene from the beginning back in 1995 or around that time. Since then im super interested into emulation. Its highly fascinating. A very long time i wondered if there is a big difference in emulation as emulators really became perfect over time and well i guess its not that much of a difference for a cacual gamer but for me it feels just right to play games and run computer systems on the Mister. I just recently got an old PS1 into working condition again. That disc drive is much louder than I remember it to be, the laser unfortunately has a hard time keeping up with some FMVs and occasionally stops audio playback, and the dualshock controller keeps setting itself back to d-pad control in less than 30 seconds every time after I press the analog button. Eventually all old hardware will fail at some point and even just finding people capable of repairing these systems can be quite tricky and expensive. I'm glad we have the Mister FGPA and all these amazing devs to faithfully recreate these systems. Testing them side by side through the same CRT monitor the PSX core feels entirely identical to the real PS1, with the difference that the Mister produces a much cleaner image and no audible audio noisefloor.

Looking at it now, from the PS1 "build" you showed I'm wondering how it would be able to play all those lightgun games (if at all) with a modern lightgun. Why do I need to put my GBA games in the GBA folder… but also in the GBA2P folder? Game gear games in the Game Gear folder, but also the Master System folder? The wonder swan core can do Wonderswan and WSC games, so why are there also 2 cores for wonderswan? Why are there 2 folders for their games? Just a small gripe, but it’s been annoying me ever since I did that fresh install.😊
@VideoGameEsoterica19 күн бұрын
For some of those it’s because the core is diff. GBA 2P is a special core. But you don’t have to put the games across both folders. You can just go “up directory” one and select the GBA folder

@ I’m aware of this, what I mean is that this is poor UX. I’ve had my MiSTer long enough to not be too bothered by this, but it confuses new users. And I think it would be simpler if cores that share games had a shared folder instead of distinct ones, then the user themselves can divide their games up by multiplayer, or color version etc. by making their own sub folders.

Accuracy is not exclusive to FPGA's, software emulators also do 1:1 real hardware replication and there are software emulators that are still more accurate than FPGAs (such as bsnes/higan).
@ArmandoDoval20 күн бұрын
Any software emulator that's accurate down to the logic gate level isn't going to be playable any time soon. Even bsnes defaults to high level emulation of add-on chips and only scanline-level accuracy in the PPU because there's literally only 1 commercial game where you need to emulate every PPU pixel individually (Air Strike Patrol.)

You don't need an expensive rig to get rid of latency. I had lower latency than FPGA (+1 run ahead frame) on my 10 year old i5 4670 PC. You can buy such PC for less than $200.
@ArmandoDoval20 күн бұрын
You don't need high end hardware to get low latency at all. The issue is that most people think VSync is double-buffered when in reality the graphics drivers usually have a queue that can be 3-5 frames long. So when they rely on VSync to act as an FPS limiter, they quickly fill that queue and then everything's lagging by several frames. RetroArch solves that by explicitly waiting for the frame to finish rendering before continuing the game loop (it does it on Vulkan by default, if you use the GL driver turn on GPU Hard Sync.) You can use Special K's Latent Sync feature to force similar behavior in almost any PC game. Doing this right basically costs nothing in terms of performance. The other issue is specific to 8 and 16 bit hardware; since they don't have a frame buffer the emulator can only generate a frame retrospectively. You need to run ahead by 1 frame so that the emulator isn't showing you an image that's 1 frame old. Emulating an extra frame of a 20-30 year old console is trivial, any Raspberry Pi can do that.

@VideoGameEsoterica the only way I would get one if they were prices reasonable but they aren't and lacking features is a total buzz killer if I have to buy a other board just to plug 4 controller kills the product for me

$160 for entire setup isn’t reasonable? 🤷🏻♂️

@VideoGameEsoterica that price is for the board alone ,the rest are like 40 to 150 for each part ,if the motherboard of fpga came with disc drive and 4 usb ports in front with a case than I would be fine with the price but I could get a cheap desktop for the price there selling for,I can get something like the HP Elite 8200 Ultra Slim Desktop for 90 dollars on Amazon

@ The magic of FPGA is not through hard work and technical knowledge, but rather through ostentation with sports cars and cigarette smoke. Society don't recognize a true artist in action. So sad 😢 😅
