Modeling Instruction saved my teaching career. As a biology/chemistry major I was tasked with teaching physics. I was terrible at it! Then I attended a Modeling Instruction Workshop (early 2000's). It changed everything. I've taught lower-level physics classes and now teach AP Physics. Modeling works for almost every student because you empower the student to do the thinking and creating. When students have that they can achieve much more than most teachers think they can. Word of caution, however... while this video is a great blurb there is much more to Modeling Instruction than a 7 minute video can capture. Thanks for making this, Paul!

Just a note to say thank you. I graduated from Manhattan High, but, both my sisters went to BHS. I'm now a middle school science teacher in AZ. Most of my co-workers were trained in modeling before I was hired. I graduated from ASU in 2015 (30 years after MHS), and I thought I was teaching modeling, and my mentor agreed, but this video helped me see some key elements I was not using. Thanks for filling in my gaps. Your videos are my go to on the more difficult concepts to visualize and explain, they also helped me fill in my own content areas that weren't quite up to speed 30 years out of high school. My students and I truly appreciate your efforts. Thank you!

Mr. Anderson, I'm an English major turned science teacher here in the Philippines. As an english major I really found it hard to teach sciencr when it was handed to me but because of your videos, I understood more of our world compared to what my textbooks offer. A very sincere "THANK YOU" for this, my students started enjoying my class. thank you and God bless!!

Paul, thank you so much for getting the word out on Modeling Instruction in Science. I have been teaching using Modeling Instruction for over 10 years, and have been leading workshops with teachers for about 5. This is a wonderful pedagogy and has changed my teaching life! Thanks for promoting teaching and learning, both in this video, and in all of your videos!!!

@Pallas_Athena The last thing I did was attend the AMTA conference last summer in Illinois. My active involvement was during her early years. I re-engaged for a short time more recently. However, my husband and I deliver food to people in the projects now. I may write about MI again in the future when I retire. I have been out of the loop awhile now....

Paul, Thanks for this awesome explanation of Modeling Instruction. One thing for all to consider is that the transition to Modeling for teachers is not trivial. It's critical for teachers to experience well delivered professional development. Michigan has been offering these to teachers across the state and we hold to the standard (set by AMTA) that they are led by a pair of very experienced Modelers, are a full 15 days long, and utilize the well developed instructional units provided by AMTA. While the heart of the experience is about teachers learning themselves through Modeling Instruction and comprehending the storylines of the units, special emphasis is placed on strategies teachers can use supporting productive classroom talk, and establishing a classroom culture where public reasoning is safe and supported. These are big challenges, especially the first year. Many return to their classrooms and are amazed to find how sophisticated student thinking can be. Still, they are on a learning curve that will be a few years long. AMTA lists upcoming workshops on their website.

Fantastic! Thanks, Paul! When I do modeling instruction in class I remind the students that all models are wrong because they are in fact over simplifications of the real world, as you mention. Indeed, we aren't including all of the potential interacting variables. However, models can be informative and can lead to predictions. I also equate models with hypotheses. We build the model and test it to see if it can produce the data we predict we should be able to measure if the model is a good fit to the real world. Like hypotheses, physical models are explanations for how or why an observed event happens, while mathematical models are mathematical representations of patterns. But it's important to remember that just like false hypotheses can can generate true predictions, incorrect models can still by accident generate the effect we predict. I know, way beyond the scope of this excellent video, but my two cents just the same. Cheers!

This is great! I second that teachers need Professional Development! But it is fun professional development! Yeah for modeling!!!! There is great high school modeling curriculum, but I am not familiar with much modeling middle school curriculum. Where did you get your middle school curriculum?

Hi Molly! The American Modeling Teachers Association is actively working to develop modeling curriculum in Middle School science. There is some information available at modelinginstruction.org and if you are a member, you have access to the curriculum to view and use!!!

this seems like a great idea for AP curriculum but it seems too impractical to be implemented to less than stellar schools, not to mention where I live standardized testing is still dominating education, at which case I fear it would be reduced to a procedure.

thomas underhill Actually I've found that in Modeling Physics it is actually the middle and lower ability students who are easier to hook on modeling and often gain the most. They are the ones who are often bored or overwhelmed in a traditional setting. (The top classes often just want to know the answer for the test. They are tougher to work with in the beginning.) Standardized tests? In modeling the class 'covers' less material but they learn it better.

David Simmons We dont even teach physics where I live lol... but i can see why the top class would often just want the answer I am surprised to hear that lower students do better though
