Dena Takruri gets rare access inside Monsanto's Puerto Rico operation, where they get huge tax breaks to test and grow GMO seeds. Meanwhile, thousands of plaintiffs across the U.S. are suing the corporation, claiming that its weedkiller Roundup has caused cancer. In Puerto Rico, locals are blaming Monsanto for getting them sick.

Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, so naturally MONSANTO will want to totally control and take over their agriculture industry, too. After years of trying, they finally forced all of the farmers in India to buy their GMO seeds and toxic pesticides, which will put all of their family farmers permanently out of business. Anyone who refuses to buy MONSANTO GMOS will either be threatened, bought out, or simply sued in court until they go broke and have to declare bankruptcy. This is how the US does business. Now we want to take over Venezuela. MONSANTO will never stop until they own the food production of the entire world, just like Jeff Bezos of Amazon won't stop until he OWNS the world. yes :and that is possibly one reason why Monsanto attacks have increased ... It became German. not US owned anymore ... Now Dow-Dupont is the US owned rival to Bayer/Monsanto in the GMO ..( except a chinese giant) . and.. FDA is the regulation maker ... they were in realtion with Monsanto when first GMO s were created ... Regulations have to change... this is the only way to stop GMO 's or harmful chemicals... as long as FDA OK's chemicals as harmless ... somebody will produce them.. If not Monsanto/Bayer ... then Dow-Dupont ... This is Just like asbestos issue.. FDA has to change the regulation to regulate Monsanto/Bayer and Dow/Dupont... Another note : Dow Dupont will be GMO Monopoly if Bayer/Monsanto goes away... so FDA regulation change is the key...

@Innocent_Villain
@Innocent_Villain 5 жыл бұрын
It might well be easier than on the U.S. mainland at least in some areas, but it's still some distance from that to saying everyone can is in a position to do it to a sufficient degree to get around the problem posed by the toxic corporate farming. If that isn't what the op was saying, then I'm just qualifying the implications in general. I don't know the entire area and don't know if you do, but if conditions were that good everywhere then chances are that more people would be living on their own farming already. It also doesn't necessarily stop the spread of toxins from the corporate farms. I don't mean do diminish the idea that *some* people can get *some* benefit from farming in *some* areas though. One of the best ways to fight corporate power (in conjunction with other ways) seems to be to bypass it, but that's part of why the corporations and governments in most places don't make that easy.

I live near San Juan, and I think it is great reporting. There is another environmental fights in the island having to do with another American company that generates carbon ashes and makes people sick. For Monsanto to pack it's bags..I think the community has to move where decisions are made: with the governor and the local legislature. Because people protested the carbon ashes and it's health effects...I think they passed legislation to that effect: pero, the people moved. They have to move and protest, ask what chemicals they are using and in what quantity. You also have to take into account, the high unemployment in the island and the fact that Puerto Rico is willing to accept anything that says; we are going to move the economy and provide much needed jobs. My viewpoint, from your reporting, is that they should not be there, but to get them to leave, other economic activities should be seen (to provide jobs for people ) to spur the economy in Juana Diaz and again, the people that are getting itchy eyes, have to go where decisions are made, to the mayor, or in San Juan, where the central government is. Please, suggest them to not be shy and protest. do not wait for them to see your face, they will not give up their business willingly. Lara

I do not understand your question. If Puerto Rico should become a state ? It depends on who you ask here in Puerto Rico..what their life experiences have been, if they have served in the US Army, Navy, etc. and most of all: I do not believe people participate in their government or even know how it works. Puerto Ricans have been US citizens since 1917 and have served in every war that the US has participated. So, you ask if we should become a state ? I know of people that, again have served in the US Army, and they definitely believe they should be a state. But living here in the island all my life..I believe we should be independent, as we are a different country with different ideals, cuisine. But to do that; we have to be educated on how we can achieve prosperity and be organized on our own and most people will definitely say; no to independence. Maybe we should stay as we are...a commonwealth. Lara from Puerto Rico

Oh...okay. There is a lot of mixing in the Caribbean. Cuba, Dominican Republic and the rest of the Caribbean island are a mix of African, Spanish (and other European powers), and Taino culture. I believe, like you, that when Colombus arrived....(yes, he did not discover anything...people already lived here), tainos where already living here. If we where to become a state...I am not well informed about what will happen with our first language...which language will be taught in schools...because I assure, many many teachers: do not know how to even speak English..So I question myself: what will happen, what language will be used in courts,, in schools. I want to speak Spanish, it is the language of my choice, I dream in Spanish and I love to read in Spanish. Good question !!!

@Kiki Melendez No, no..Spanish is our first language !!!! What I said is that if where a state, English will probably be taught at schools...when many people here: do not even know the language. I am fluent because of the school I went to.

We are not a colony...we can retain our relationship with the states..but we need a more organized and efficient government, where people are well informed about their rights. NO somos una colonia en ese sentido. We do have autonomy and there are still many territories in the Caribbean..we are not the only ones....Lara

Part of the problem but not the main issue. USA decided to exterminate a federal exemption policy for U.S. corporations all of a sudden GDP dropped 30% so... Debts don't decrease... It grew exponentially while the economy plundered. Being an enclave of U.S. foreign corporations. This companies left so did the government revenue
