I would rock the HELL out of it, and I have sentimental attachments to this particular guitar. My dad was head of Fender's pro audio division when the custom shop made that MOTO strat, and John Page (who designed the beautiful beast) was and still is a good friend of the family. The mid nineties MOTO is my favorite ever guitar of his.

I've seen these but have never found a video about them. Thank You YES, I would ROCK this guitar. Wow, that Red Moto Telecaster in the background of the Strat sound demo looks fantastic with the light shining directly on it! I have a 2000 Designer Series Stratocaster with the Abalone dot fret marker inlays, it still looks really nice as even though the dot markers are just a small dot they do stand out against the maple fretboard. I've been happy with mine, I bought it brand new back in 2000 (actually this guitar was a gift from my Wife, I still have her too!)

I own the red prototype that was made in 1999 or 2000 to show to dealers, when Steve Grom (Fender’s VP at the time) wanted to try out different colors, as a follow-up to the white sets. Eventualiteit only the teal Green color was produced, and none in red. The red prototype stayed in Grom’s office for some time and then was sold to a dealer called Moe’s Guitars by the people of the Scottsdale facility. The next owner sold it to a Swiss collector who in turn sold it to me. I still have it, and it’s a stunning beauty. It must be the red MOTO Strat that is being played in this clip! Luc.

MOTO was the original finish of some Fender lap steel guitars (like the Champion) even prior the solid body was invented. Even K&F lap steels were using it. So it is "traditional" even for fender, much more than BSB or sunburst =) I like the turquoise one!

I believe that this may be just more evidence that Wood and paint type & thickness does not maybe matter? Consider the thickness of this pearl stuff and the Glue to put it on! Does the Guitar now sound like a piece of Plastic like we are led to believe that it would? I own an old Fender 1983 Bowlingball Strat. Very thick finish! I Love this guitar. And really can't tell a difference in sound to my other Strats. Pickups seem to be the Key to sound. TEX MEX for example. Or P-Rails. Or the noiseless variety. Dang I can't think of the name of them just now. Anyway, That s my opinion. I even have a couple Strats with 2 Humbuckers in them. So to each his own. If you are like me. Experiment. And maybe have a couple examples for different sounds. But don't get hung up on the Wood or Paint used. NOTE: Wood does matter if you have a clear or natural finish that you want to look beautiful Again! In my opinion. Not so much for Tone! Let your Pickups & Amps & your Playing take care of that. I know from experience I will get Haters on this comment. That's OK. I thought that way for years. I've had expensive Guitars. Then bought ,Less expensive. And started to see No difference.. I bought a Brand New Gibson LesPaul Custom back in the early 1970's That I never really cared for. I Did Love my Gibson 1963 ES-330, My Old Gibson Melody Maker, & My 1970's Lespaul Recorder. But, that LP Custom just was not it. The Back of the Neck was Sticky like the Paint never cured for one thing. This is Long! Sorry!!!! The thing is. So many guitars out there today. In So many Price Ranges compared to my day of starting to play back in 1966. The reasonable priced Guitars in my day came from Sears or JC Penny's or Decca. They were Junk! You young people have wonderful choices for a First Instrument that are actually quite good. So, buy the best that you can afford comfortably. Don't get caught up in name Brands if you are a beginner. And Enjoy your musical Journey . No Matter how good you may get! You will always have your music to fall back on and comfort you! A Stressful Day! Just sit down on the Couch and Pickup your faithful Friend! Ans play some Tunes. Always a Stress Buster. Thanks to anyone who actually read thru this Old Guitar Players Ramblings. Take Care All. Happy Strumming.

Terry Himes Excellent comment! I have been a believer in the tone wood myth, and although it definitely does matter in acoustic instruments I'm beginning to change my opinion in regards to electric instruments. I agree with your statement about pickups(and electronics), the amp, and the player being the main source of the tone, but I do think everything else figures into the tone to lesser degree. Speaking only for myself and my preferences I am a fan of Fender products from the 50s, and that influences what appeals to me in sound, looks, and feel. I prefer ash bodies(especially with transparent finishes as you noted), I think lacquer finishes are superior to other choices, I like maple necks with maple fretboards, and the V shape neck with 7.25 radius is another of my preferences. I also love Fender Tweed amps and I own a vintage tweed Champ, a Fender '59 Bassman Reissue, and clones of both the tweed Harvard and the tweed Deluxe. Since I am also a fan of reverb and tremolo effects that those amps lack a Strymon Flint comes in handy. I think a lot of people underestimate the importance of the amp in the tone equation. So many people are fine with paying $1,500 for a good, professional grade guitar, but complain about spending anywhere near $1,000 for an amp. Judging from the fact that you said in your comment that you started playing in 1966 I must be about 20 years younger than you. I got my first guitar in 1986. Your statement about the quality of beginner gear in 1966 versus today is absolutely accurate. It is even vastly improved from the choices I had in 1986. The improvements in manufacturing technology have made it possible for companies to improve quality and lower(or at least maintain) the price for beginner gear. Thanks for taking the time to read my lengthy comment. You are also right about enjoying your own music journey wherever it may take you. Personally I should spend more time playing than researching my next purchase, but it is good to be at a point in life where you can afford some of things you could only dream of in your youth.

There is nothing quite like a Moto finish on a P Bass
@ResoBridge5 жыл бұрын
I think this finish originates in the Italian piano accordion market. Pearl celluloid has been pretty much the traditional finish for these instruments and at least one of the factories making coloured and patterned celluloid was or still is in Italy. It must be a horrible finish to apply because as far as I know it involves taking a thin sheet of celluloid and softening it - perhaps using heat or possibly a solvent and moulding it over the object you want to cover. The clever bit is how they hide the joins. I don't know how that is done. There is a KZbin video of a Petosa accordion being covered but unfortunately it explains very little. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3eknWx6j7CaebM

I might rock one of these, but I'd have to try it first. I've actually played a couple of moto fenders, and while they both looked great (they really don't photograph well), the playing experience was decidedly different between the two. The first one was great, notes rang out really cleanly. The second one, while it physically played just as well as the first (setup, etc), there was something weird going on with. Some notes rang out fine, but some were decidedly muffled, and others produced a strange out of tune wolf-note overtone. I'm not sure what was going on with that one, perhaps the moto was separating from the underlying body? Dunno, but as it was, it was nothing more than a wallhanger. Pretty, but not really playable...
