In this interview, psychotherapist, author and founder of Khiron Clinics, Benjamin Fry, tells us how he recovered from his life-threatening mental breakdown by healing his nervous system. Talking about all the symptoms,and all the dangers with a dysregulated system will not help people who have it..Maybe some Solution talk would help more

It's so amazing to find a Dr who understands what is going on. Most therapists need to diagnose vs first impressions. I have quite severe cptsd. I have come far but it's so hard to find a therapist who understands that we are more complex than just anxiety or depression. It's what they see and what they diagnose even though I fot over suicidal depression and a phobia in my 20s. Who tells you how you feel, yourself except its just notblike that in therapy. Thr therapist TELLS you, you are depressed and need whatever pills. Iv been talking past therapists for 7 years. Now. My diagnosis is borderline personality but that psychiatrist had a bias and refused to diagnose cptsd. The other said I had been too successful to have cptsd 😂 now Im finally at a therapist and what is she treating me for...cptsd! I also have attachment disorder and alexythymia, all seld diagnosed bc tge tgerapists were too busy trying to force me into a suitable box to actually listen to what I was saying. In hindsight now that I'm suffering sudden unconscious anxiety and hv slowing been working through so many traumas, this panic is a wonderful link to an actual event. A hold up at gunpoint with my children in 2006..finally clarity on at least this issue. I'm not just crazy or some spaced_out neurotic and there is a place called wellness at the end of this.

I happened to find a Jungian analyst. We did some amazing work. She was instrumental in the self-work component of healing.

Great talk. My experience w/ C-PTSD, along with my extensive research leads me to hear Mr. Frye as an authority. Body-based modalities are a must for healing early and chronic trauma. If the date of the interview is accurate (2 years ago), I'm not certain if the word was out that it is known that there are many more "neurons" in the GI tract than the brain, along, of course with the accompanying neurotransmitters. Since Neuron is/was a CNS cell, and the GI is/was not part of the CNS (at least not back when I studied these things), I believe we're in semantic-ville on "Nervous System" v. "GI". Either neuron's require redefinition, or the CNS include the GI. No matter the carving of our words, hormones v neurotransmitters are all clearly affected, so you're both working with the Nervous System, no matter how defined. You asked him a particularly interesting question towards the end: "Knowing what you now know, what, if anything might you have done differently?" His answer was honest, and it made me think about this. I'm 55 years of age, and knew, intellectually, of my physical abuse. For many years, I've formally and much more informally studied this, tried to understand, and "tried to heal". So many modalities, but such defenses, so very difficult, and while I did reach a point of "prefrontal surrender", via Vipassana meditation, the body is in dire conflict. I have trusted that the conflict would eventually resolve, but meditation without a teacher, especially with early trauma is, in hindsight, unwise. Also, I had been taking as prescribed, Klonopin, at the same dose for 10 years and was in "tolerance", as the dose was never increased. So much of what I sat with, and am presently enduring, is likely neurological. It turns out in the U.S., "blackbox warnings" came in 2016 for dependence, 2020 for "don't take for longer than 4-weeks", and "addiction centers" want to yank one off of this benzo in 30 days. Heather Ashton knew, as do many now, that this is a horrible idea. So, I wean slowly, as the nervous system, GABA is not going to restore its functioning until I'm off and through Post-Acute withdrawal. I have had a workup, and am interestingly well with the exception of through the roof testosterone. Enso did tests and said she wasn't concerned. Therapy, Craniosacral therapy, Bioenergetic Psychoanalysis, a Vision Quest (1st preverbal trauma surface), and I can afford no more. Chiron....that's kinda what it seemed, and how I justified this suffering, this path less path. But now I have become, it seems, in need of more than is available, and even "The Meadows" is like $50-100k/month...so here, I tried on my own, used up the resources, got trapped on a benzo (which takes Psychedelic Therapies off the table), and now I'm getting worse. If I go to ER, medicated to the gills I'd imagine. And I'm but one?! Epidemic.

Hi Eric, thanks so much for your comments, and yes you are right to point out the links between the CNS and the GI... I should have spoken of the enteric nervous system, which is the nervous system in our guts essentially. But yes, very linked as you point out. Sorry to hear about your experiences... Benzo withdrawal is one of the worst... Very useful information and I love both your approaches (shame the NHS is years behind) - my only constructive feedback is that it is explained in a very cerebral way - which is inaccessible for a lot of people who are dysregulated.

Dealing with my LO who has spent 8 yrs after a horrific trauma maybe back to psych hospital. Anti psych meds crush her dopamine to nothing left. She either lives as a chemically lobotomised and silent for 5 yrs, being age 31 now or in psychosis/ talking continously to herself n her imagined 'friend' unable to sleep but paranoid. Then adrenaline turns out to be the precursor of high dopamine ....assumed high dopa re psychosis. Im supposed to agree to another section order. How when i think its shite, outdated and ignores CPTSD

@@jackwaslander5029 ...just came back from the Mardi Grass weekend up in Nimbin...the weed capital of my country....They have talks on cannabis use throughout the festival...at one i attended i couldnt help putting my hand up to mention that they may have missed something really important by focusing on the brain all the time... and that is...the vagal nervouse system... Its life changing...i ve been practicing TRE a couple of times a week combined with yoga...plus Ketogenic diet...mate...i ve successfully reduced my psyche medication by half...! So to answer yr question...Im feeling great...very happy and on path...thanks.😀

One can hear a certain set 📐 point • of her Vagus Nerve in the low tone, gravelly texture, ETC. of her voice. CUZ, the vagal Nerve Network is highly connected to the larynx AKA voicebox. BUT, it's ALSO in the facial expressions. SAME Mechanism of Vagal Neural Connections. NOT to be umm errr try'n to sorta analyze her, lest any reader be kinda thrown off. In fact, it's the stuff that has motivated her to give the world her gift, which has become a gift to us. Think 🤔💭: driving force, strength 💪🤯, underpinnings, overdrives. I have been stuck for 9 years now (28 years old) in derealization, hyper alert, hyperventilation, anxiety, depression, light and sounds sensitivity.. all started with 1 massive (panic?) Attack.. i have been prescribed with a beta blocker a week ago and my symptoms have been lessend by 30 %. I really wonder if all of this comes from dysfunctional nervous system. I really need help to fix this.. to be honest i had already given up until i had this small boost from the beta blocker the past few day's.

I’m in the same exact boat except I developed mine after a huge illness. Just a major food poisoning infection 11 months ago. I’ve been stuck in a derealization state ever since and now I’m severely anxious. Can’t do anything. And I was also prescribed a beta blocker. I highly believe this is all from a dysregulated nervous system.

@@ryleeavila7854 sadly the beta blocker ended in disaster at me with severve side effects. I have some succes in treating derealization with exercise and breathing exercices. The fear for the symptoms of it keeps you in a loop.

@@ryleeavila7854 i recommend to learn box breathing. Wich means 4 seconds slowly in, 4 seconds hold, and then breathing out slowly, hold, and repeat. It takes some effort in the beginning but after a couple days this goes automatic. It has a great calming effect

Dissociation is a complex topic. You could look at the work of Janina Fisher to get a really good trauma-informed view of that area. If you think of disregulation as being the wrong threat response in the right situation, dissociation can be the result of long-term activation and freeze in situations that don't resolve. So the flight becomes a flight from the self (because you can't actually get away from the threat which is not actually there), and this can result in splitting into separate internal parts. Freeze can also be thought of as a leaving of the body when trapped. So it is complicated. Techniques to resolve it often involve helping these parts to make friends again, or getting the client back into their body with body-based work like yoga or meditation. IFS is a good technique for working with parts. Somatic Experiencing is good for getting back into the body. Janina Fisher synthesises both. Hope this is helpful, good luck!

From my understanding dissociation is a solution to not feel anymore. We are cut from out body to not feel the pain we went through (physical/emotional). We went above what our body was able to handle. From my personal experience what seems to help is to connect/touch/feel our body to integrate we are Here and Now, and we are Safe here and now. Self compassion (and not self rejection) towards our inner child/body that didn't have other options than to disconnect to not feel pain seems to be a key element too (to reconnect and own our wounded parts). I hope that helps.

What’s a root cause? If there is a root cause, is there also a cause? Something is either a cause or it isn’t. To be sure, there can be contributing factors, but isn’t saying “root cause” simply being pedantic. It’s a cause or it isn’t. Root cause = cause for people who like to be verbose/wordy.

Unfortunately I didn't like her way to ask questions and how much she talked about the stuff she does, it was like she was trying to compete with the guest intellectually. Let the man talk more and try to be more simple with the questions. She doesn't seem approachable or relatable something I felt more with the guest.
