The broadcasters are killing ATSC 3.0 by insisting on DRM. That is why the Nextgen DVRs are taking for ever to roll out.
@robertlunderwood Жыл бұрын
One of the biggest problems with NextGen TV is the lack of 4K content being produced. Outside of movies and a few sporting events, you don't see it.
@jamesheartney9546 Жыл бұрын
4K broadcast is way oversold. Vast majority of viewers won't be able to tell the difference between 4K and good 1080p. The real selling points for ATSC 3.0 are more robust signal transmission (allowing mobile devices to see it) and true HD on main channels and subchannels. The rest is chum for greedy broadcasters.

NEXTGEN TV is dead on arrival due to it including encryption and digital rights management. If you tell me I cant use my DVR, why would I bother with this?

DRM is Not the encryption but it does work in conjunction with the Encryption. For the encryption their using MPEG Common Encryption aka MPEG-CENC.

If they keep encrypting the content with DRM like some stations are doing, it is going to fail miserably.

Trouble is the boxes available so you can get Next Gen TV are costing around $200! I 'm waiting for a more affordable converter box and I don't see them yet!
@jovazquez61026 ай бұрын
Yeah I'm just gonna wait it out until they're in higher demand. I'm still confident it will happen since most people are cutting cable now. Until ATSC 3.0 is widespread enough to actually be useful and the DVR/internet integration works, I'm not picky about having 4k. I'll take my 1080i/720p channels with my $10 antenna and $5 coax extension cable. Plus with my Fire TV, if I watch a nascar race on Fox, NBC, or CW, as long as I stay on that channel, I can pause, rewind, and fast forward. The only channels in my area that have converted so far are Fox, CW, IND, Unimás and Univisión. NBC and CBS haven't converted yet but they're both 1080i, which is good enough for me 🤷🏻♀️
@garatobra2504 Жыл бұрын
Everything is good, except the DRM part. TV stations will extort money from viewers to unencrypt information carried on PUBLIC airwave which should be free to begin with. So ATSC 3.0 is a no go on behalf of consumers.

Eh, sort of. We got some local channels up , but they're still not showing anything in 4K yet. I'm still waiting on this "revolution".
@highvision5061 Жыл бұрын
@@NyneIX9 Yeah, the problem is nearly none of the major networks have a way of delivering 4k content to their affiliates to pass on. When the affiliate station has no 4K content available and no discernable plans from the network, they can't do much. NBC is doing some kind of hybrid splicing with some local affiliates on a case by case basis. But only if you have Comcast cable.. That is, if your local affiliate has a special fiber feed from NBC directly that connects at the Comcast cable head end, they can switch to the 4k feed whenever the affiliate puts network programming on, but this is only for the benefit of Comcast subscribers. The 4K feed isn't even at the local affiliate's own master control, they just trigger the equipment at Comcast to take the 4k feed. So nothing for over the air viewers who do have NextGen TV reception. Shooting themselves in the foot by doing this. But since NBC Universal is part of Comcast, why care about over the air viewers? The other problem is there is no mandate for new TV's to include the NextGen ATSC 3.0 tuner in TV's. Sony did announce they are including NexGen tuners in "all" their TV's but I think that's only 43" and up, so none of the smaller kitchen TV's. The other major TV manufactures like LG and Samsung have so far only included the new tuner in their higher end TV's where most of those people are probably going to be subscribing to services and money is no object, like this Doctor's entertainment system by the looks of his house.. Why would he limit himself to just over the air, when his disposable income can include a massive entrainment center with a big TV in the middle of it? Heck, Samsung hasn't even announced if they are going to include a NextGen tuner in their higher end cell phones where it would make sense. Especially the Samsung Z Fold screen phones they have, where you can now have a decent size screen in your pocket. Imagine being able to tune in local stations without internet service, especially if the cell service is swamped after a storm or not in service because of that storm. A ton of resources and expense has been put into NetGen TV and little support from the manufactures or networks, all because they can't charge for over the air reception directly.

Not the revolution. Lol! I feel you though. It's interesting to see the changes coming for antennas upgrades and the next generation. My Grandma still uses Antenna in rural Alabama for her 1 or so channels. Lol! It's exciting whether I use an antenna or not.😊

Before you revolutionize the way people *watch* TV, you're going to need to revolutionize the *content* on that TV. I pretty much gave up network television some years ago because honestly, 99.99% of it bores me out of my skull. These days, I screen news, weather, documentary content, the occasional curated movie, music, and comedic shorts (when I'm in the mood). I don't have cable and I'm not the slightest bit interested in some network bozo's notion of what the next big thing is going to be. Plus, my current TV upscales everything to 4K, so using that as a selling point is largely irrelevant. And DRM is a non-starter. Why should I pay $100-200 for a box that's going to allow corporate and government greedmongers to encrypt, kill, filter, and *regulate* ad-supported PUBLIC broadcasts? Lastly, from what I've seen from reviews of ATSC 3.0 tuners, performance has not improved. Tuning is still slow and clunky. No one is using 'look-aheads' or favorites to 'pre-tune' channels for better responsiveness. NEXTGEN TV? NO THANK YOU.

Nope! Antennas have been making a come back especially if you cut your cable and satellite and need your local channels or just want it for backup. We still have cable and even I have tried to get a antenna to work in my area just in case. Plus, it's fun to see what is available from my location and if I can get it to find the channels. 😊

Not even boomers. This is strictly for the foolish. You are paying extra for a service that is encrypted and whose benefits (4k) don't really exist due to lack of content.
