I think my brain will finally break my first day on the beach when I finally get moved down there. Looking in the rack line, going in the water, just picking everything up to take home, LMBO. I think that first day, I'll find me a good rackline and plant my bottom, and just get tinys all day. That way I'm not running round like a chicken with my head cut off. Thank you Beach Buddy for always being here every Sunday. What a way to start off the Wacky, Work, Week. YOU ROCK SHARMON!!!!

My husband and I got to visit Honeymoon Beach State Park last week. I got to spend 4 lovely hours on the pet beach before my hips gave out. Lol! Back home now with bronchitis and longing to be at the beach again. I had the pleasure of saving 2 sea anemones and a giant Atlantic prickly cockles. I gently returned them to knee deep water. And, I collected 2 hag stones after learning about them for a lovely local.

Hi Charmin! Love the scallops on Sanibel! They are gorgeous!! Those skate eggs or mermaid purses exit through the ends of the sacs. If you squeeze them gently like a coin purse you can see if it opens. I had a gentleman show me this trick when I was visiting Marco Beach and found a few. Thanks again for the adventure!

Hi Sharmon! Well, what a nice trip to Sanibel and what a special haul. I can't believe all those gorgeous scallops. I must go to Sanibel when I go to Florida. I always feel stunned when I see the beauty of calico scallops and the varieties of patterns and colors. By the way, how do you tell the difference between calicos, bay scallops and rough scallops? I understand how one would ID a prickly scallop. I loved all your finds tonight. Wow....those mermaid purses. I've never heard of them before let alone see one. Thanks for the education. I agree with the person who said that your show is her favorite part of her Sunday evening. It's mine too. When I was a child I used to watch Wild Kingdom and Walt Disney on Sunday evenings. The Latin name for apple murex is a derivative of French for apple: pomme. Both Latin and French are Romance languages, so there are similarities in French to Latin and vice versa. Latin is pomum, hence pomme, or apple. 🍏 I hope that helps you remember names more easily in the future. (I hope I didn’t confuse. )

I have found several of the mermaid purse skate egg cases. They have never been empty. I always put them back in hopes they make it and hatch. Never have been lucky enough to find an empty one. I do know what they look like though because I have seen hatched ones in beach ecology centers. You can definitely tell hatched from still occupado. It is possible to see the baby inside by shining a light, but it has to be a very very bright and spot-light, not dispersed light like the sun. Sometimes if the baby is big enough and active enough, though, you can actually feel it moving around in the egg casing if you hold it in your hand. I found one at Orange Beach, Alabama in February that I could feel moving a little bit. It literally washed up at my feet and I showed my friend and then walked out into the freezing water about three feet and gently shoved it out on a wave.🤞 Hopefully it’s a happy little skate baby swimming free by now.

Hello, Beach Angel! Sorry to be oh, so late this week! It's a long story... I hope nobody ever wants me to get up at "oh God!" o'clock to go shelling, unless it's on Kice Island! Now, that's the prettiest scallop I've seen lately! 😍 When I lived on Pensacola Beach, (yeah, I know, why'd I leave it? I felt that I had no choice, as I fell deeply in love with a mountain loving man and I chose to go with him to his home in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and, eventually, to East Tennessee!) Anyway, I was given a big section of a fishing net by someone and I stretched it across the ceiling of my little beach cottage and filled it with the different gifts I got from the other mermaids, such as their cast off purses, dried out starfish, sea urchins, beautiful shells, dead seahorses and the lovely crucifix fishes. I left my net and it's collection with a dear friend when I moved away from the sea and have regretted it ever since! Alas, my dear husband has gone ahead of me on another journey and I find myself longing for my home by the sea. I can no longer live in the sea, but spending time beside the sea is almost as good... One day, perhaps, this Lost Mermaid will return to her beloved home by the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. It is my fond hope that my dream will come true... You, dear Beach Angel, had a glorious day collecting shells! I am almost jealous, but quite inspired and homesick! Much love to you and all my beachy friends from Rebecca, The Lost Mermaid 🧜♀️ ❤
@SWFBeachLife8 ай бұрын
That net sounds lovely. I have some cigar boxes I want to decorate (AFTER the shell mirror) and I'd like to incorporate some sort of tiny net on the box. And I've had a few "memory" jogs lately and I love how our brains keep our special moments tucked away until something stirs the edges and allows the memory to unfold. I am hoping for a calm summer, with NO hurricanes, so the time of year to worry is almost here. It's the dance we do with living so close to the sea! ❤️

If you get a very large jar with a lid, you can fill it up with those egg casings. Stuff them in the jar. It's a nice display, and you won't smell them with the lid on tight.

I have some dried out ones I was going to try to sell so other people can have those itty bitty horse conch shells too. If I do decide to display them a jar will be prefect!

I've noticed 🤔 when shelling certain 🐚 are in clusters of the same species. Is that normal?
@SWFBeachLife8 ай бұрын
Yes! Certain snails like to eat the same thing so they tend to hang out together. Especially during spring or mating season 😃

I'm so jealous of your scallops . We just dont get them like that here in Australia.

Yes, but all the other cowries and fantastic beauties you do get are amazing!!!

@@SWFBeachLife true. I have found some beautiful cowries, scotch bonnets and our own scallops are pretty special too. You know what they say ‘the grass is always greener’ ha ha.

First time to see your program. Learned a lot. I lived on the west coast. Near Neah Bay in western Washington I found a sand dollar grave yard, I was in hog heaven. I got over 200!
