This is interesting to see! I believe Shinhan also has opaque watercolours? Shinhan Pass or something like that? I'm not 100% sure about that anymore. But it's definitely an interesting medium.

This is a unique product for sure! Have you tried Mijello’s ‘mission white’ colors? They’re a little hard to find but are their own opaque watercolor range, very similar to this, and the texture is a lot more consistent, at least in my experience! They’re really cool

This is very timely! I’ve recently been very curious about opaque watercolor since I like both watercolor and gouache and I’ve been wondering if opaque watercolors would be worth it.
@rabbitpomelo53462 жыл бұрын
Exactly!! I’ve always been avoiding the ones labeled as “opaque”, since it was the transparency that drew me into the medium. But opaque single pigment watercolor like cadmium red and yellow also seems to be a must among professional artist,

I just got a set for 29.99 CND so I’m happy, I haven’t tried all my tubes yet but if the binder separates I’m going mix and keep them in the tubes, they look like they’d crack and piss me off In the pallet. 😊

You should try the Mijello mission white class or the Shinhan pass paints! Both are hybrid paints and might give you the quality that may be missing in the Paul Rubens.

Honestly, I'm probably gonna get these paints eventually. I use watercolors, but I often try and make them extremely opaque. My brain doesn't like acrylic as much as watercolor so I haven't made the jump to try gouache, but these might be the exact type of paints I SHOULD be using instead of trying to force watercolors that aren't opaque to be so
@alexehrhardt11042 жыл бұрын
These look pretty neat, but I love the way gouache works, too! They’re very different from acrylics in the way they feel, so you might actually like them more than you think. They are also pretty different from watercolor, but they’re more like watercolor than acrylics. One way you can try gouache is by getting a tube of white from a reputable brand (I use Winsor and Newton, but Schminke is also good and there are others that are pretty good). You use the white gouache with your current watercolors and you can get a feel for how the paint feels. I didn’t do that; I just dropped a bunch of money on a primary palette and a couple “fun” colors and found out I wasn’t too fond of two of the colors I bought, but I still love my gouache (and I bought replacements for the colors I didn’t like! And a black, which I thought I didn’t need, but I actually love using it for a Zorn limited palette!) Anyway, have fun with all of your paints! Whether you get these, or try gouache!❤

Alex, that's an amazing idea! I'm a Holbein brat lol. Tho, I've always preferred Acryla Gouache to reg gouache.
@alexehrhardt11042 жыл бұрын
@@melanie990 I’ve never tried the Acryla gouache, but I really want to! Holbein has so many pretty colors that I would love to snatch up! I would love to just get ALL THE COLORS just for the sake of completing the set! (But I won’t, because I’d put myself into debt doing that!😅) I’m pretty happy with what I have right now, though, so I’m not going to add another medium for awhile, just to keep my wallet happy.

This is an interesting paint. I once saw one demonstration, way to make an opaque watercolor, you need to add bull bile to it. But due to the fact that it is bile, the paint loses light fastness even more

I usually add gouache on top of a watercolour, be interesting to see if these really do change depending on how much water used :) I have a Paul Rubén’s watercolour block (paper) I’m looking forward to using en plein air when I’m away in a few months time 😁 The detail on the eyes with the tear ducts is phenomenal!

I really enjoy this painting, and learning about your inspiration and concepts. I think the mental shift in your head is the biggest thing to help you see it as a seperate medium, and allows you to learn, experiment and have fun. That said, I saw you using your usual quill brushes. Do you prefer natural bristles or synthetic on this medium? Thanks for the amazingly calm video and hope you have a nice day!

I always love when you post a video :D Thank you! I really love the color you chose for the hair, and the flowing texture of it. I love that this paint functions kind of between gouache/watercolor as you said. It reminds me a little bit of a stronger version of the Kuretake Gansai paints? A little? Anyway. Great job here! So glad to hear from you again!

So I bought the 24 set. Squeezing them out was a nightmare. The blues were the worst. The liquid and solid goop (can't even call it pigment) were not mixed well. Sometimes, all I got was just liquid dyes and had to soak them with paper towels and retry again. Painting with it wasn't ok. More like watercolor than gouache. Most were not opaque like gouache but you can relayer. The finish is matte and velvety looking so I like that alot. And the colors on the painting were vibrant when dried. Re-wetting the squeezed out paint want great. I'd recommend using these fresh. Overall, not an enjoyable experience at all . I wanna return these but I DO love the colors and finish of the painting this gives....sigh . I'm usually really impressed with Paul Rubens products but this was like a 90% fail for me.

I feel like it's hard to reactivate because it moves away from the characteristic of gouache that is easily activated when layering so it will feel more of a watercolor but just opaque.

I loved these paints sooo much, that I purchased 2 sets. I will say that all the colors I watched you poor I had the same inconsistent experience with. So I'm guessing it's a pigment or dye characteristic to those colors.

The consistency inconsistencies 😞 But these are going to be extremely useful for anyone who likes to paint materials in a more realistic manner; especially skin tones and other layered color tones. Because you can always use the transparent watercolors on top of these. Absolutely perfect for capturing the warmth of our blood, the pink/red under tone in the skin of a living person. Or the colors in opal and pearl.
