Not a lot of difference. The key factor is bullet performance. Referencing Lucky Gunner's testing of the 124 HST & HST +P there was not any difference in penetration and only a few hundredth in expansion. So take you pick, my experience is about 50 fps in the two. Yes, I do prefer the +P but not a lot of real world difference.

My belief is that with additional pressure comes added recoil resulting in additional wear on the firearm. There will also be an increase in cost per box of 20 rds. Your choice as to whether these increases are worth the slight additional penetration and expansion. Be sure to fire several boxes through the firearm you will carry to check accuracy and function. Appreciate the discussion on the difference between standard and +P ammo. Looking forward to gel tests.

Xtreme Defender 68 grain 9mm+P has pretty much the same felt recoil as the 115 fmj you use for plinking, and is totally sufficient for self-defense (imo even better than hollow points). It means I can train for my ammo without needing to break the bank. And the lower recoil is nice.

I like the Inceptor ARX bullet in +P. It's a 65 gr. frangible lead-free round. So it carries light, no lead exposure, no rounds that miss are gonna go through a barrier. Light, so it shoots flat with low recoil. The +P doesn't make a difference with it. It's a solid defensive round. The Hornady 135 +P load performs/scores better in the entire 40 shot 8 event FBI test series than the 135. That's not necessarily the case with other bullets. Some actually perform better (or what the FBI considers better) at standard pressure. Both may perform/score well enough, but the +P may perform better in shorter barrels; that's not always the case either. Training ammo should handle like duty ammo, but there are lots of reasons why that doesn't happen for everybody. Some PDs Q with duty ammo, some do not. Shooting Blazer Brass 124@1090 and carrying GD +P at 124@1220 may help you miss when it counts, or not. Or Blazer Brass 115@1145 and 115 +P+ GD at 115@1300. Or most range fodder v mil-spec/US NATO 115@1325. As an aside, guns sprung for NATO loads (usually 115-124@1220-1325) may not run as well with loads outside those specs. Guns matter too. For many, +P, +P+, and NATO is way easier/softer to shoot in a full size or compact gun than a sub or micro compact. How you shoot is usually more important than what you shoot.

I carry +P, but I never shoot it at the range because of cost alone. I know I should at least train with the ammunition I intend to defend myself with, but I’ve been a big-time .45 aficionado for around 40 years. Up until about ten years ago, my carry gun was a snub-nosed .357, so recoil is not really an issue with me. It’s just that as a retiree on a pension, it’s much more economical for me to practice with standard ammunition.

Interesting vid, I went with some +P for both my full size and micro (same ammo used in the vid). What I found on the range, the full-size recoil was just a little bit. The micro was much snappier. Both of which I expected. I felt in both, the ammo itself was far more consistent round to round, box to box than the typical range ammo I’ve run. I’m sure there’s plenty of other premium ammo that are just as good, if not better.
