Perfect pitch is fairly rare, but I guess everyone in the comments has it.
@urphakeandgey63083 жыл бұрын
Most people in the comments don't have it because often times they're "using" their perfect pitch and making comments on things that literally don't require it... Tbh, often times they use it in places someone with relative pitch might perform better.
@willtanhey3 жыл бұрын
Well, it's not as rare as you might think. Although 1% sounds puny, remember that it is 1% of the human population(approx. 7 billion).
@aerohydra38493 жыл бұрын
@@willtanhey There's also the fact that its not exactly hereditary but most likely gained through musical education at a young age (or other exposure to tonality). For example, there have been studies that say upwards of 15% of musicians who started before age 5 gained absolute pitch and almost 80% from China due to their exposure to a tonal language.
@Im-BAD-at-satire2 жыл бұрын
The Chinese population a higher rate of people with perfect pitch, the hypothesised and of course most likely reason is due to Chinese being a tonal language meaning understanding tones is a necessity when learning how to speak and listen to the language. If they're Chinese or of recent Chinese decent then they'll be more likely to have this genetic trait.

I don't know if this is a problem for anyone else with Perfect Pitch, but I am a pianist and I have PP. I feel like I am a poor sight reader because of it though. I taught myself piano starting at 14 and it came very naturally to me, but when I studied music in college I struggled hardcore with my accompaniment coursework. When I was teaching myself I learned everything by ear and I was able to get to an exceptional level of playing with that alone but I had to take remedial coursework in college just to improve sightreading

Astronix it’s more likely you’ve had perfect pitch all your life but weren’t aware... your weren’t taught what the notes were so you didn’t know that you had it, but when you learned the notes and their pitches, you were able to retain it since you’ve had that ability since you were born...

I’m a pianist with perfect pitch too! I struggle a lot with sight reading too, especially because if I hear the song before learning to read it, I just use my perfect pitch to help myself learn it. At least some of it. I’m currently trying to break that bad habit so I can improve at sight reading
@vetaniellecalya16624 жыл бұрын
I can definitely relate to that. I play the flute and recorder for years. I don't even remember when I started to play recorder. I found out I have a perfect pitch when I was nearly 17 - until then I seriously thought it's an ability that everybody have (or at least majority). I started to learn piano as a 16yo. I struggled so much with a bass clef because until then I used just a treble. So I was forced to remember how my teacher plays it just to be able to play the left hand. My sightreading is quite good in treble clef but I still don't remember the bass clef. But I had another insight. For me personally, I think I learn almost everything by hearing so most of the time I don't need to see something. And now I'm studying Chinese. I remember every single word and can distinguish the tones but I'm nearly unable to remember the characters because there's nothing I can hear there. Just a funny paradox.

Anyway, I think “everyone in the comments” has perfect pitch because they looked up this video because they were curious about it. That’s what I did. Perfect pitch is rare in a *population.* This is not a population, this is a YT video.

When someone gives me that relative sound, i can tune my instrument. So i don't have perfect pitch. But... Even if someone gives me a 444 Hz A note, i can tune my instrument to exactly 440 Hz A note. What is it called like?
@doctorwhotardis4 жыл бұрын
Since you're comparing the 440 Hz A note to the 444 Hz A reference, that's still relative pitch. Your relative pitch is more acute compared to most since you can compare the relations between microtones, but that's still a form of relative pitch.
@philipvlnst2 жыл бұрын
Am a violinist and after playing with the orchestra for several years, and after years of tuning based on the oboe, I realized I "memorized" how A should sound like. I was able to even "hum" the sound of A or at least hear in my mind and tune my violin without the aid of sound of a pitch A. But it also made me wonder. "A" has a range of from 338-440-445. I am used to an "A" of 440 and while 442 make sound "nicer" to me, I was uncomfortable getting used to the sound of a 440 "A" simply because the whole music community tunes at 440. Now some people brag that they have perfect pitch. Out of politeness, I simply smile and nod my head and say, "Good for you." But I wonder what what would happen if my pianist friend with perfect pitch were to join a original Baroque instrument group where they will decide to tune "A" at 438. Am afraid it might torture my perfect pitch pianist friend.

One of the problems people with 'perfect pitch' may need to deal with is in historically informed performance of 'baroque and early classical music. There is then a need to adjust to various pitches from A-392 and A-409, the most used 'baroque' pitch A-415, Handel's tuning fork A-422.5, and the typical Mozart era pitch A-425/430. It is also necessary to adjust to a wide range of different unequal 'temperaments' e.g. Werkmeister, or Valotti. For the historically informed performance of music from the period 1600-1790, so called 'perfect pitch' A-440/445, with equal temperament tuning, is useless and a huge disadvantage; but good if one wants to play music from the baroque and early classical period in the style of the 1950s on modern instruments at modern pitch.

I can replay songs in my head that are in tune and in key. I cant tell you which notes are which, but when I recall a tune its always in tune. For me, it was a process of memory rather than automatically knowing the notes I hear in my head. For example, if I want to recall an A, I'll just start humming Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton in my head and then test that against my guitar. I dont know if that's considered perfect pitch but if I need to sing an A, C, G or D then I've memorised how they sound in my head with reference to a song I'm recalling. I've tuned my guitar this way for decades without the need for a guitar tuner or reference note. But I sing out loud and in my head every day so it's quite possible I've just memorised how these songs sound. If I want to replicate a C#, I'd first recall a song in the key of C and then work it out from there. Is this how others experience it? Or does perfect pitch require the ability to recall notes I've yet to memorise?
@miglemigle9575 Жыл бұрын
what you're describing here is true pitch and it's still impressive, not everyone with musical training is capable of developing it. i recommend you look into it more, but it's essentially just really good pitch memorization, that, if you wanted to, you could use to remember how all 12 tones sound. the difference between true pitch and perfect pitch is that perfect pitch, as described in this video, is knowing (within a fraction of a second) what any possible frequency is as a note, while true pitch relies on comparing the frequency you hear with a note that you memorized and therefore takes at least a few seconds to decipher the correct note. although having true pitch is arguably better because it's a skill and cannot be "lost" as it often happens to people with perfect pitch in their fifties or sixties
@who_cares8484 жыл бұрын
Perfect pitch literally drove me nuts when I was younger. I hear a note in almost every sound and it becomes maddening after a while, like life is just one really bad a-tonal song. It got to the point that I would be in class and the teacher would pick up the phone, and from all the way across the room I could hear that the tone before you dial anything is an F and an A played over each other. As an adult I've learned to live with it but it still drives me crazy when I hear people singing to themselves and it's in the wrong key. And no I don't correct them like an asshole. It's a cool ability but it has the potential to make you lose your mind lol.

Not the names of the sounds. One time I embarrassed myself. I didn't know what perfect pitch was and my teacher asked for the starting pitch of the music. Receiving my Undergraduate Degree in Piano Performance, I studied with a wonderful instructor with her DMA. She had perfect pictch. During my first year of our weekly master class, she asked another student to start with the phrase which began with a "F Sharp." As all of us sat in the auditorium, we looked at one another but no one said anything. Then, it was my turn to perform for the group and instructor, and, again, she said, "Jim, start with the melodic scale in the section which began with an "A flat." Being a humorous person, I suggested that I should start with the "G Sharp." Then, we paused and discussed how she knew the pictches without having memorized all of her students' music.

I have perfect pitch, and I have a little story about it too, but I want to state this first. My favorite key is B, and my favorite pitch is Gb. Though I must say, Bb, B, F, C and E stick out a lot (as well as Gb). For some reason, D is the one note I almost have trouble recognizing. It doesn’t even sound like other notes to me because I don’t use relative sounds. It literally just sounds almost unnoticeable. I have to actually think about that one. 😂 So one time, I was at a gas station with my father when I was young. Suddenly, there was a car crash in the street in front of us. I was turned the other way, but I saw both vehicles after the collision. They got out of their cars all furious or worried or just filled with panic. My father was too, especially since he actually watch it happen. *But the whole time, I had a fascinated look on my face because the sound of the tires drifting was actually a Gb!* my father thought I was a monster tho lol

I have perfect pitch, and my best friend does too. But sometimes we argue about what note pitches actually are (only if the pitch is out of tune). For example, if it's a sharp-tending F, I might call it an F while he calls it an F#. Thus, I am fairly certain that there is no one "perfect pitch," and everyone who has it perceives sound differently. Also, I can tell exactly how many cents a note is off of its pitch center, whereas he cannot, but he is quicker than me at identifying notes, and can sing notes more in tune without trying (whereas I have to think about it).

I have Perfect Pitch and I want to be fair: Most people aren't that accurate naming Colours (divide the chromatic wheel by 12, and you won't know exactly the name of all of them)... Just think about this: -X: _"So, what Colour is this?"_ -Y: _"This is _*_«Purple»"_* -X: _"This is not _*_«Purple»,_*_ this is _*_«Magenta-Violet»"_* You get what I mean? Y'know, it's just... that, and Perfect Pitch people have to learn exactly every tone of "Colour" to prove that we have it. This is not a reproach, but I want you to compare correctly (since many people think that if you don't recognise 12 chords in a row you don't have Perfect Pitch).

Okay, this scares me. My autistic daughter just started piano lessons and her teacher is beginning to suspect she might have perfect pitch but the child is still learning the names of notes so can't really be tested. But she sat down after a week for her 3rd lesson, began her warm up, and told her teacher the one key was wrong. The teacher played several f's together and sure enough the one my daughter pointed out was very slightly out of tune. Here is my fear... My child loves music, we only have an electric keyboard at home, so we don't have to worry about it being in tune. If she has perfect pitch, I really hope she doesn't, but if she does, I'm worried she'll have problems with real pianos if they aren't perfectly tuned. I want her to love playing, she has a passion for music, but if she sits down for a recital and the piano is slightly off, I don't want her having a meltdown or it throwing her so off she can't play.

Same - when I was a baby, I even learned to speak just by listening to people around me do so. Amazing, the feats of mimicry people are capable of.

I imagine everyone here has it because we were all told we did and wanted to know what it means lol. That’s what happened to me - was told by the director of my university band during sax lessons that I had it.

I just came here to find out what perfect pitch is. I clearly don't have it but wouldn't someone with perfect pitch recognise the sharps and the flats as well? I don't understand why the piano player taking it down a notch from C to B sharp would make a problem for someone in the choir with perfect pitch.

Having perfect pitch is the best. I can relate to a lot of what was said here. All the piano music transcriptions on my channel are done by ear. It's pretty neat.

I developed perfect pitch when I was in high school. Yes, I have perfect pitch, and I can also sing the notes. Not to mention all the sounds you hear in everyday life. Example, an ambulance siren.

So, about a week ago in band class, my director was tuning the saxophones and she couldn't figure out the note in concert pitch. She hit about 5 notes, and then I said "Mrs Seymore, it's a G." She hit a g on the keyboard and just looked at me, and said "I keep forgetting you can do that" and then goes on to show the whole class my perfect pitch. Now people call me wizard and I get people playing random notes at me asking what they're playing.

tsoat I had a similar situation happen when I was in high school many years ago. My classmates thought it was a riot. My sister (who has very good relative pitch) likes to show me off to her musician friends and play a handful of notes (nasty dissonance) and ask what notes I'm playing. I actually had this scientifically proven 10 years ago as I participated on a study on mapping where on the human genome this ability lies. It was a neat experience. :)

When people find out I have it, the next thing they do is ask “what is this note?” and make a swooping noise or just scream and it gets really old.

I've always had a really "good ear" and according to some people's definition it was perfect pitch and I was like naaaah. I was right, it isn't and a lot of those people don't have it either lmao

I'm tone deaf. But I have a good relative ear. The combination is a shitty one if you ask me. Because of you gave me a note that's like 35cents out it sounds terrible. Sure I can give you the perfect intervals from that note but it all sounds horrible because it's in-between.. Soo I'll stick to drums xD
