yeah mate. its actually a bit of a bastard to teach. i did a whole course on digital communications it at university and phase-sync was completely omitted. not even mentioned in the material. taught QaM, but no phase locking. figure that one out. i honestly ran into the trouble of trying to make a demodulator and realized i was missing something. and found PLL on my own.

Interesting. So a phase detector doesn’t only detect that two signals are in phase, but also that they have the same frequency. • Equal frequency and equal phase angle: constant zero phase difference. • Equal frequency but different angle: non-zero but constant phase difference. • Different frequency: time-varying phase difference.

If two frequencies are different, then the phase difference will not be same and input voltage to VCO will not remain constant. How will this control the output frequency?

Why do we have an Amplifier before the Loop Filter? Is it because without the amplifier, the average DC voltage produced by the Loop Filter will be lower than needed? Will VCO will receive lower DC control voltage than needed due to the nature of averaging?
@chiraag3972
@chiraag3972 4 жыл бұрын
Great explanation, thank you. One question - how are we increasing the frequency of the VCO if we are constantly trying to match the phase difference of VCO and the reference oscillator?
@Mangakan_desu

through the divider.
@VikramBamel
@VikramBamel 2 жыл бұрын
VCO is typically programmable and uses frequency multipliers to achieve higher frequency. At a given voltage, say V1, the multiplier would be set at a programmed value, say 10X.
@VikramBamel
@VikramBamel 2 жыл бұрын
Also, once we set the VCO to a desired frequency(by fixing the multiplier), there’s no need to keep increasing the frequency any further. We just need to maintain that high frequency as good as we can.

As much as I understood, Phase difference doesn't matter, as long as the difference is stable.
