So essentially, Philosophy, or at least this limited form of it they are being critical of, is humans doing pattern recognition on the whole of reality, and then claiming that those seemingly identified patterns are actually constant, fundamental truths, when in actuality reality is constantly changing and becoming in ways that can't be boxed in by these sorts of categorizations. Or have I completely misinterpreted this.
@epochphilosophyАй бұрын
Yeah, I'd say that's pretty much correct. That idea of course goes further than just D&G, but they, and a ton of other theorists/philosophers like Nietzsche aren't too keen on static idea of truth as something fixed and non-relational. (Really not too keen on anything being "categorized" as something static tbh.)
@nowhereman6019Ай бұрын
@@epochphilosophy yeah, I came to a similar conclusion myself a while ago. It's a shame that this method of thinking seems to be somewhat fundamental to human psychology. We have a natural inclination to want to understand the world in ways that are useful to us rather than by how it actually is. We look at a tree and see it as a source of wood building and fruit for eating, rather than as an organism fundamentally connected to the rest of the environment with uncountable aspects and uses. We see things only as what they are to US rather than what they are in and of themselves and to everything else.
@epochphilosophyАй бұрын
@@nowhereman6019 Yup. We can thank the Brits for that! I actually referenced this in the last video on Agamben, but I had a professor once say western society is stuck in John Locke's philosophy. It has stuck with me ever since.

After reading D&G’s 2 major collaborations, I actually encourage anyone trying into their project by ready WP first, then moving on to Anti-O and then 1KP. Such a wonderful text.
08:20 yeah, I agree with this. Post-structural approaches help in preliminary investigations and sort of 'setting-the-stage' when thinking of Systems. After that, a structure formed in terms of mutually defined différant objects allows for more formal reasoning. Can't give an exact source, but Nagarjuna in the mulamadhyamakakarika also says something similar.
@epochphilosophy29 күн бұрын
Believe it or not, this kind of point actually sets some philosophy people off I've noticed. And I've never really quite understood why. The rationale typically being that if you use structuralism and/or post-structuralism dependent on what you're analyzing, you're mixing frameworks that are incompatible. (Which is technically true.) My defense is: I am too stupid to completely accept or reject certain philosophical frameworks of analysis. There are probably smarter people out there who can articulate the various points with some solid certainty, I just don't think I can personally. Idk, in simple terms, structuralism has always seemed pretty decent at understanding certain sociological patterns. Post-structuralism seems good at things outside of sense perception.
@mapleandsteel29 күн бұрын
Yeah, bro exactly. I know I might be wrong, but as a control engineer, I’m happy if it works. If it doesn’t work, then the process of struggling to find a new structure that explains the edge case is also fun.

Noted. All my audio mixing follows the industry film making standard of music, effects, etc. always remaining -20db under the sound level of dialogue. Would you be cool with pointing out some sections that we're extra loud to you?
@Izerion27 күн бұрын
@@epochphilosophy My apologies, I should probably have included these in my initial criticism. In particular in the intro (1:47 - 2:57), when the second speaker comes in (5:00 - 5:39), the sound effect coming in at 15:43, and the rising background music at 26:57. This feels like nitpicking, but I am quite sensitive to this type of background sound effects when listening to a video that requires my attention to understand fully.

Native English speakers, if you can say, 'Duh,' then you can correctly pronounce French words and names like 'de' and 'Deleuze.' For the latter, say 'duh' twice, then repeat adding a 'z' sound at the end, then repeat again replacing the second 'd' sound with an 'L' sound. That's it: duh-luhz.
@epochphilosophy29 күн бұрын
As a native English speaker, I am able to pronounce the word that accurately describes people who get upset when words on the internet aren't pronounced in exact same phonetics of another language. It goes like, Doo-Shh Baa-gg. You say do, like you do something, then shh, like when you want someone to shut up, then bag like when you go to the grocery store. That's it: douche-bag.
@JohnMoseley29 күн бұрын
@@epochphilosophy Hey, don't be a Deloozer. I can't resist that joke, but I'm not trying to pick a fight. Who's getting upset here? Sorry, but it seems to be you. We all have blindspots and some of us like to see past them and learn new things, just as I like learning more about philosophy from videos like yours. Of course you're free to ignore it, or chuck insults or whatever.
@epochphilosophy29 күн бұрын
@@JohnMoseley Hey, if you find value in any of the videos I make, that's great. Happy if so. There's just an infinite list of comments you see everywhere of people who seem to take personal insult if something isn't pronounced in exact accordance. Language differences be damned. I ignore 99.9% of them.
@JohnMoseley29 күн бұрын
@@epochphilosophy Fair enough. I never see these comments, so I thought it was just me, and it wasn't about me feeling insulted or angry, as I say. I study foreign languages and if I was mispronouncing something and someone corrected me and, better yet, gave me a pronunciation tip, I'd be grateful. So perhaps I was obeying the golden rule or perhaps I was trying speak 'with all the coldness and cruelty of true friendship.' ;-) Yes, I enjoyed this video and will watch more of yours, however you pronounce things. Over and out.
