Back when I was in junior high we moved and I went to a new school, and was mistakenly put in an algebra class for which I was not ready [in my previous school we had not gotten that far in the textbook, so I had never heard of algebra, but since I had been getting A's and B's in the class the registrar at the new school thought I knew more than I actually did], and it was the first class of the day, so I was still half asleep one morning when the teacher asked, 'What is the opposite of pi?' and I, in all sincerity and ignorance, answered, 'Cake.' I didn't understand why the rest of the class laughed.

I'm an engineer. The simple ratio of 22/7 is off from pi by only 0.04% which is good enough for most practical purposes. In my first job I was writing software that modeled the organs of the human body using cylinders, ellipsoids, etc. some of which were cut by various planes so that we could estimate organ dose from gamma-ray radiation that hit the organs, using Monte Carlo simulation. For that purpose, we used 3.141592653589793, which is the maximum number of significant figures one could use on and IBM/360 mainframe computer back in the 1970s.
@DennisKovacich
@DennisKovacich Жыл бұрын
An equally easy-to-remember fraction is 355/113, and it’s only off by 0.000008%. If you find it difficult to remember, just think of writing it in old-fashioned long division: 113)355. It’s two each of the first three odd numbers, split in the middle by the division sign.

He’s right as far as he goes, pi has different values, of course. BUT he doesn’t even touch on its variability. Sure it’s 3.14 or 22/7 during the day. But at night it usually cycles to higher numbers and occasionally to lower. Some nights when i get up to tinkle, pi is around 4.5 and a few months ago i found it was 6.3 at 3:15 am. It seems correlated with the tides in Brisbane Australia of all places. Maybe it has something to do with synchronous kangaroo hopping?

Yeah, but physicists are also very well known for their simplifying ability. For example, if a farmer comes to a physicist to figure out why their cow has a problem, the physicist will immediately assume that the cow is in vacuum and is spherical. Joking aside, and this is for real, physicists sometimes use pi squared as the same value of earth's gravitational acceleration.

What do we have today, let's see: OOOH, love this one: What Is π? Depends on a few things: Your origin (Some like more traditional to their heritage thingies)/taste (Ingredients Usage), your location (Ingredient Availablity), the day (Whether your smart and plan this vs the "Is there a shop open tactics.), The amount of people that come over OR How hungry you are, the oven (some cannot take larger meals when you're "very hungry", I think of for instance a R9D-CL kiln (for the Tech-oriented cooks) vs a Efco 850°C for the slightly more hungry but equally geeky/nerdy cooks), the humidity (whether you're cooking in the kitchen or underwater (not all ingredients or applications do similarly well under water)(Note, this is for hobbyist diver-cooks.), and an exponential plethora of other unknown variables which points to Pyramidic-Square-Spheroids in the 0K vacuum of the Time-Space-Continuum of a random clock ... .

Pi is interesting because it is such an important constant in math, science, and engineering without being one of the Magic Numbers that we think of in many other areas of philosophy or theology. In Christianity, there is a Trinity, the three in one, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Even in Science, we had a Trinity of Trinities, Time, Space, and Matter. Time has Past, Present, and Future. Space has the X, Y, and Z axes. Matter had Solid, Liquid, or Gas. It is comforting to think of concepts in Threes or Sevens, but Science and Nature have much more complexity hidden beneath the mysteries of creation.
