When training horses (or any animal for that matter… even sometimes humans..) the main way in which horses learn new behaviours is though Operant Conditioning. One component of Operant Conditioning is Positive Reinforcement. Here, Dr Andrew McLean explains what Positive Reinforcement is, and how we can use it in horse training in the form of food rewards or scratching / tactile rewards.

What is Equitation Science?
Equitation science promotes an objective, evidence-based understanding of how horses learn, and how to train them accordingly. It promotes the welfare of horses during horse training and competition by applying valid, quantitative evidence-based methods.
