Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is a combat system with bladed weapons and unarmed fighting techniques, a sub-discipline of Kali, which is an umbrella term for all Philippine Martial Arts (FMA). Kali is an ancient blade art, which existed long before Spanish colonization. Its name derives from the Filipino word “kalis”, which means “sword”. There are literally hundreds of different styles of Kali. Many tribes had their own style, and many of them are lost forever. Pekiti-Tirsia, founded by the Tortal family in 1897, is one of the best-known FMA styles. There are three pillars in Pekiti-Tirsia Kali and Philippine Martial Arts in general: Agility: Due to the size of the Filipinos, they had a significant disadvantage against European conquerors in close-range combat. Instead of physical strength, they had to rely on their agility and speed. In Kali, the focus is on several quick strikes, rather than a single powerful punch as in boxing. These attacks may not be devastating in and of themselves, but each hit grants an extra second of incapacitation to the opponent and a chance to execute the next attack. Inertia: All movements in Kali are continuous. There are no full extensions of the hand or recoiling movements as in other martial arts. Each movement ends with the charging position for the next attack, which gives the impression of a circular movement. This method effectively utilizes momentum and inertia, allowing a person to wield even a heavy weapon without overloading their hand. Interchangeability: All techniques in Kali are interchangeable, regardless of the melee weapon used. It makes no sense to learn new techniques for each group of weapons, when, at the basic level, all weapons work the same way, as attacks are based on the lines of movement of the human body. This philosophy goes so far that even unarmed fighting techniques (Suntukan) derive from techniques performed with a weapon. Pekiti-Tirsia is one of the few martial arts in which a smaller, physically weaker person can actually defeat a larger, stronger opponent. During the era of Spanish colonization, Filipino fighters could easily defeat Spanish warriors with a stick versus a real sword. Spain's technological superiority was the only reason they were able to conquer the Philippine Archipelago. 🥋🇵🇭 Source: selfdefensecombatives.com/filipino-martial-arts-kali/ www.nomadkacf.com/ www.pekiti.org/

What is Pekiti-Tirsia kali? Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is a system of Kali, a style specific to the Filipino Martial Arts which contains hundreds of systems and varied styles. Pekiti-Tirsia Kali was founded in 1897 and is the family system of the Tortal family. The sole heir and guardian of this system is Leo T. Gaje, Jr. who is referred to as the Grand Tuhon. Pekiti-Tirsia Kali was developed and improved during the years 1930-36 by Conrado Tortal. Tortal was from Panay, the island that the chieftains from Borneo settled on when Kali came to the Philippines. The Muslim chieftains established a colony on Kalibo, Aklan-this is sometimes cited as the origin of the name "Pekiti-Tirsia Kali" (which means "little cuts"). Another reason is that a practitioner of the art is trained in carrying a knife, which is called a "kalis". All fighting ranges are integral parts of the Pekiti-Tirsia system, but special attention is given to close-quarter fighting. Pekiti Tirsia is about quartering the opponent, or 'cutting up into little pieces' total destruction with counter offence while not getting hit. Pekiti-Tirsia is a true martial art to defend your country, person or family, it is not a sport. In traditional practice, Kali techniques-a ritual dance with sharp weapons-are performed at sunrise. The Kali student whose strengths are supposed to be drawn from the sun also directs his eyes towards it, and avoids blinking for as long as possible. He also accustoms himself to seeing sharp swords swinging towards him without fear. Pekiti-Tirsia's movements are based on the traditional blade art of the Philippines-Kali, involving slicing swords in a circular motion, symbolic of the orbits of the moon and the planets. They also incorporate triangular movements symbolic of constellations. In ancient times, Kali was taught in rituals and were then used pragmatically to survive against adversaries and wild animals. Pekiti-Tirsia Kali incorporates 5 main weapon categories (including the human body): Solo-Single stick, sword or spear Doble-Double stick or sword Espada y Daga-Sword and Dagger Daga y Daga-Knife to Knife Mano Mano-Hand to Hand The Pekiti-Tirsia methodology originates from offensive and counter offensive principles against attacks from all ranges, angles and threat levels. There are no separate or specific defensive techniques as such, as the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali man is always seeking ways to end the conflict.

Ah, that explains a lot. I trained with GT Nene back in the late 90s around the time he left PTK and started his own DTS school with his son GM Jerson Junior. At that time I only knew that Maestro Rommel was associated with GT Leo, never heard anything about him since then. As for the politics, we were lucky in that Maestro Nene never involved us in his family affairs, I didn't even find out about the issue between him and his nephew until years later from outside sources, he always told us to respect the seniors regardless of affiliation or association. He was a real gentleman who only cared about sharing his "family treasure" with his students.

There is an American named Tim Waid who got kicked out of PTK as well but he kept the name and started an American organization called Global PTK or something. What happened there?
