What is Purgatory?

We all want to be saints, but the struggle against sin and selfishness can feel overwhelming. There may be days where we might feel satisfied simply making it to purgatory rather than entering the pearly gates. But is this lukewarm path the only way to make it to heaven?
Today Fr. Mike delves into the reality that in this life, we are given every opportunity to prepare our souls for God’s presence. Embracing the sufferings of this moment purifies us the way the refining fire of purgatory would. In this way, we can prepare ourselves in this temporary world to live alongside our Lord in the everlasting world.

@Scott Seufert Your leaving out a huge catalyst to the fall according to scripture. If it weren't for the serpent possessed by Satan, humanity would have not fallen into sin. If Adam had not given into the cunning words of Eve, his righteousness would have atoned for the sin of Eve, however that's not how it played out and you are correct that God still had a plan to redeem man through the Son of Man and proper baptism of the faithful to receive His sanctifying grace offerred through His Church.

@@kabinifrp May I respectfully disagree? There must be a Purgatory or, there are plenty of folks who believe in such. I have been attempting to gather as much spiritual information as possible and I've found prayers that would suggest there are many in Purgatory; those who have not purified themselves for Heaven (what exactly that means I have yet to comprehend). There are, reportedly, priests in Purgatory. There are prayers asking Jesus to forgive those in Purgatory. As Father Mike stated, you must have a belief in God, must participate in his Holy Sacraments and MUST do "His Will". This may boil down to whether one chooses to believe (or not believe) that Purgatory is real, but I'll take the position that it is, based on what I've heard and read from others' accounts.

I had to go through 5 years of suffering with someone until they died to come to that full realization and ask God to use it and direct me to love him and live for his glory. The person who died went through purgatory on Earth it seemed but then when they died and i felt broken, all the happiness of the angels were near their body. We could feel Gods grace took him to heaven. Now God wants me to love him above any person. I felt the Holy Spirit tell me during mass when I was sad that it was time to love him first, above all and everything. I'm very imperfect and need his grace to know how to love God as he deserves.

I’m a cradle Catholic and recently have been exploring my faith more deeply. This began with the Bible in a year, and has expanded into TMIY, and deeper personal exploration (e.g., adoration) The deeper I go, the more distinctly I feel a spiritual presence in my life. I often feel a real presence of evil around me, and when I’m at mass I feel the presence of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, I’m actually starting to feel this. This video makes me wonder if my “life” as I’m currently experiencing it is in reality purgatory and the discomfort is just the difficulties of “life”drawing me closer to God.

@@TriciaRP im not completely understanding. Are you saying there is no purgatory? I don’t agree with that if you are however i do think we should be thinking more in terms of what Jesus went through because he loved us and on top of it, it must have been even more difficult for him because he was thinking about those souls who will not make it to heaven. He must have felt horrible that he went through all of that and still they will not make it. Like when i think it was Veronica that was crying for him and he says, do not cry for me but for yourselves and your children. It’s heartbreaking!!

I clicked this video with a curiosity about the Catholic teachings of purgatory. Thank you for this sharing! While I disagree, it is great to have this chance to hear a different perspective. While I am glad to see that there is a common agreement between Catholics and Protestants about the all-sufficient death and resurrection of Jesus Christ being the basis of salvation, I am surprised to hear the divergence here where purgatory is believed as potential stage "used to make me into the kind of person that can step into God's presence." Instead, I find myself holding unto the preaching of "salvation by grace alone" all the more stronger. Hey guys so what I learned from my Jewish faith is oral sex isn’t considered sin if it’s with one partner and The Only Partner. But what they need to know is the sanctification of the marriage bed will keep people clean so they can go to Heaven. You need the man of the houses blessing a lot of times which is why they require you to go to a minister rather than Adam and Eve it. But might not be sin to Adam and Eve it either but the sanctification of the marriage bed is still important. It’s so important to always pray before bed.

Father Mike I’m a Believer not associated with any earthly formal religion. This frees me to focus on God’s word vs. man’s interruptions or ground rules on how I need to live my life. That being said, there is so much spiritual application provided by Mike in his commentaries that we can be filter through the Holy Spirit so we can use these insights to enhance our growth and relationship with God. Fr. Mike, there's a great prayer called the 12-year prayer of St. Bridget of Sweden. It states one of 5 promises from God is "The soul who prays this prayer everyday for 12 years will avoid Purgatory." The other promises are really great as well. I believe in this, because God's promises are not like our promises. God keeps them. My wife, and I have been praying this prayer every night before we go to sleep for the past five years. We came to the realization that we want to continue praying this prayer even when we finish the 12 years, because of the other promises. A friend also helped us realize that if you pray this prayer for twelve years, you will have went through every blow, every wound, every suffering that Christ endured for our sins. God bless you Fr. I hate getting haircuts. The barbers all want to talk about sports, which I don't follow anymore. And I tell people, "I like my hari long and flowing. Like Einstein, or Beethoven. Stop praying the rosary stop praying to Mary or any other saint. Pray only to Jesus in the father‘s name. You pray to Mary you’re doing the rosary and you’re definitely not going to heaven you’re going to that place where it starts with an H. There’s no such place as purgatory. I’m trying to tell you. I go to apostolic/Pentecostal church. Believe me when I tell you that I have been in a lot of different churches. I found this church and it teaches from the Bible the true word of God I just got baptized, and I was baptized in the name of the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Find a church that will baptize you in the name of Jesus and not just the son. We do believe in being baptized with the Holy Spirit and the speaking of tongues. There are many good churches out there Listen to spirit filled pastors/teachers. I also listen to David Wilkerson, RC Sproul, John MacArthur. Please do not pray to Mary. Mary was esteemed among the women not above the women. When praying approach God IN THE NAME OF JESUS. We can’t get to God unless she goes through Jesus and I realize that Jesus and God is the same, but the Bible says to approach God in Jesus name and that’s what you should do. Again in a spirit of Truthfulness I DID watch the entire video , I have no issue with this priest's hair as many have commented on how good it looks, I repudiated his stance on Purgatory that has absolutely no Biblical basis for. I have read the entire Bible more than several times , yet I am not a scholar and Not Once have found any Biblical evidence for this priest's false assumption. There are no Catholic Churches nearby that offer Bible Study, so I and reading with a friend one night & some others another day, and myself when I can (from the beginning). There's much I don't know. I'm not having a religion crisis. I am Catholic. I was raised Catholic. My husband converted & we raised our children Catholic; they were both altar servers. Hello friend. Sometimes when I read own my own, I find that the Holy Spirit speaks to me in a personal way. At times studying in a group of people opinions get in the way. Study until God has a perfect study partner/group for you. If there’s a small advice I can offer is focus on what the scriptures says vs religious affiliation. Praying for you 🙏🏾

So the Catholic Church implies Christ’s blood wasn’t sufficient. Total blasphemy. Christs blood is sufficient and paid for our sins. By his blood and our faith we are justified and made righteous, the job is done. His willingly going to the cross paid the ransom for our sins, he took our sin onto himself, fulfilled the law for us by his sacrifice and we are saved by His Grace. NO FURTHER CLEANSING (PURGATORY) REQUIRED. To say there is purgatory is a slap in the face to Christ’s sacrifice and the Father’s love.

Whereas in purgatory only the soul is undergoing the pain of realisation of one's sins of commission and omission. It doesn't have an option to do, or undo anything for reparation . Hence most of the trials of this earth are more valuable if undergone with prayer and self correction, than the pains of purgatory.

I am not, nor ever have been a Catholic, but believe that I had a vision, dream, or remembrance of myself sitting in a heather gray void. I came to believe that this was a level of purgatory. I was seated on a bench like you find in a locker room. So I was comfortable being seated but could see nothing around me but the gray void. Then I lifted up my head and started calling and shouting "JESUS SAVE ME." "LORD JESUS SAVE ME." Then I popped out of the grey void. AND was not there anymore. But here. I have come to believe that there are different levels of purgatory. Some possibly darker than others. Depending on faith & obedience to God. Like a child being sent to the corner to think about your behaviors.

I was Catholic growing up. My Mom introduced me to knowing about Jesus yet..I didn't know HIM. In 2005 the weight of my sins were crashing down on me and I knew I wanted OUT off this life. Bear with me because I'm going to ask you a series of questions that Jesus literally asked me. And the lightbulb will come on when you realize that Jesus did it all. 1. Jesus asked me. Am I the perfect and unblemished Lamb? ...Yes 2. Everything I went through and all the blood that was spilled was for what? Forgiveness of sin. Paid by Jesus blood! 3. Also when the cup of my father's wrath was poured out on me. Was there anything left for you? No!!! 4. Not one drop?...no 5. When I said it is Finished. Did I say you will finish it later at some other place? ..no!! Jesus said so if I did it all and went through all of that for everyone and their sins. Then why would I need a place like purgatory? The last question is the one that you will understand. Even more.. When that thief on the cross ask me to remember him when I come into my kingdom. I told him, today you will be with me in Paradise! Did I tell him that he was going to purgatory or paradise? Do you think he went to purgatory or paradise? paradise!!! Read Romans 10:9... You will be saved. @po18guy Accept suffering in this life and accept the forgiveness of Jesus. People do go straight to heaven, and yet nobody is perfectly pure. Don't make God out to be a rigid authoritarian. I never did say there is no purgatory. The vast majority of people go to purgatory, but if you give Jesus your all, he will perfect you himself and take you straight to heaven. Jesus explained this all clearly in the parable of the unfaithful servant. There were three outcomes. The one who knew what his master wanted, but didn't care was cut to pieces. Theo servant who didn't know what his master wanted but disobeyed was punished lightly, and the one the master found doing what he was supposed to was waited on by his master.

It makes complete sense to me. God is freedom from sin. Sin is what detach us from peace. Instead it bring worries, attachments to mundane things, fears, doubts, resentment, anger, jealousy, hatred, concupiscence, … you name it. If we can be free from all this here and now, why waiting??? If you need to apologise to someone, do it today. If you need to forgive someone, do it today. If you need to love someone, do it today. This is God among us. Amen🙏🏻

There is no improving on the complete work of Christ for Salvation;You know the part where The Almigjty God of the universe allowed himself to be whipped, spit on, his beard pulled out, beaten by Roman soldiers and crucified on a cross for your sins and declared on the cross," It is finished" ,so that you can have a direct personal relationship with him. Don't let Satan distract you with Mary, Rosary, religious ceremonies, the so called perfect pope, statues (idles) of Mary, the saints and even a depiction of Jesus. By the way the Bible says to call no man father and it says to pray for the saints not to the saints. It also warns not to repeat prayers over and over to be heard. Example: Hail Mary and Our father.

What you said in this video is very true I've always believed Purgatory to be place where we go that God has forgiven us for our sins but we haven't forgiven ourselves and believe we're not worthy to go to heaven and we remain there until we learn God's true love and that our sins were forgiven by God and like in life we're just holding ourselves back
