You hinted at it, but W.C. Smith would say that there is no such "thing" as religion.

In his works he rejects the idea of religion being static & argues the term "religion" should be replaced with "cumulative tradition."

@@TenOnReligion I think that it is more accurate to say that for Smith, what we call religion is actually people who live "faithfully", in a "tradition" and supported by "community".
