You have just explained service (custom s/w) vs product. Rather than explaining what is Salesforce. We know its product. Yes definitely you can.. As a beginner, the easiest path to learn would be to start with the Salesforce Administrator certification track. This would give you a foundational understanding of the platform and its core features and after this if you are interested in programming you can go with Salesforce development path otherwise you can choose Salesforce business analyst.

There is no comparison between Salesforce and SAP as one is the CRM and other is ERP, but if you are asking it from the career perspective then we would suggest you to choose Salesforce as more and more companies are adopting it and therefore the career opportunities is also very high compared to SAP.
