Doctor of Audiology, Clifford R. Olson, from Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses what the most common type of hearing loss is, what causes it, and what your treatment options are.
Website: www.DrCliffAuD...
Clinic Website: www.AppliedHea...
Over 90% of hearing losses are Sensorineural. Hearing loss can occur in 3 different areas of the ear. The outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Sensorineural hearing losses involve the inner ear. More specifically, the cochlea and the Auditory nerve.
When Outer hair cells die, your best treatment option is usually hearing aids.
When Inner hair cells die, you may be a candidate for a cochlear implant.
When you have a tumor on your auditory nerve, aka. Acoustic Neuroma, you may need a CROS device or a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA). In some cases, you may need a brainstem implant if both auditory nerves have tumors.
Always make sure to consult with an Audiologist to determine which type of hearing loss you have and what you should do about it.

WOW! That was the clearest explanation of sensorineural hearing loss I've ever been given as a hard-of-hearing hearing aid wearing person. I'm so glad I stumbled onto this one! Other audiologists and hearing instrument specialists should just show everyone this video! Thanks for the explanation, Dr. Cliff!

Same, I had my first hearing test the day after my 21st birthday. Definitely tell someone though and go to a doctor. They’ll be able to tell straight away if it could be a quick fix (wax buildup deep down) or if you need to have a hearing test.

Same here with my left ear,I’m 15 and I had a brain tumor removed about 2 and a half years ago.Since then I have has constant ringing in both of my ears,I’ve lost a smaller amount of my ability to detect higher frequencies but it still effects me every day or every other day-I’m most likely getting hearing aids sometime in the near future so that I can hear a bit more clearly but I would definitely recommend talking to your parents and consider scheduling an Audiology appointment at your local healthcare center to see what you learn and what treatment options are available to you.

Excellent explanation. I do wear hearing aids now and I have Sensorineural Hearing Loss. I don't recall the audiologist explaining it to me this way. I actually read my health record and see it shows sensorineural hearing loss...although she is very nice, she never explained it to me the way you did in this video. Great job and thanks so much for this information.

I am 48. On 31/08/2021, after a short afternoon nap, I suddenly could no longer hear from my right ear. The conduit to the tympan had been swollen for a couple of days but nothing serious. I went to the ER and diagnosis was otitis (there was redness surrounding the tympan) with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops for 5 days. No change. In the shower, could not feel the water jet hitting my tympan. It was that bad. Went back to the ER. Now prescribed oral antibiotics for 5 days. Amoxicillin. No change. Finally went to my GP who diagnosed SSHL and immediately put on oral steroids by an ENT specialist for 10 days 60mg of Prednisone. I did get more flexibility in the ear but no change as to my hearing. Oral steroids were extended for another 4 days at the same dosage and tapered for 3 days. No change. First injection into the ear via the tympan. 1 week later no change. Audio still shows -60 to 80 db for lower frequencies and between -60db and -120db for higher frequencies. Now on a further 7 days of oral steroids, 60mg Prednisone. No change. Absolutely devastated. A buzzing noise in my ear outside when there is a lot of traffic. And it feels blocked. Still clinging to hope but time is against me....

I always had excellent hearing, then about 25 years ago when I was in my late forties, overnight I developed SNHL. I went to work as normal and found that I couldn’t hear the telephone clearly in my left ear. I had the phone replaced, but had no improvement. I saw a ENT physician and I learned for the first time about SNHL. He sent me to have an MRI to eliminate the presence of any tumor or other cause (negative), but other than that no treatment options were available. My right ear improved-not to 100 percent-but the left ear continued to get worse. I now wear hearing aids; they have some limitations, which I’m sure is different for everyone. However, today’s technology is great. A side note: I had difficulty hearing, but during the COVID epidemic, trying to hear people who were wearing masks and/or standing behind a plexiglass shield was maddening. I still think everyone mumbles.😊

I had a really bad ear infection on my right side and it seems now that my hearing is just fucked. I can hear but it's usually muffled, sounds like I'm underwater sometimes. It's so frustrating because I constantly have to get people to repeat themselves and I rely on lipreading sometimes. I haven't seen a doctor yet but I'm so scared that it could be a tumor or something. The noise thing is definitely something I experience - everything just gets drowned out and I can't make sense of anything.

Dr. Cliff, I have tinnitus & hyperacusis, and wear protection in environments predictably above 80(ish) dB. I wholly trust you, your audiological opinion, and your sniper background, here, and wanted to get an idea of whether perchance I was having a reactive sort of spike/fullness condition - or a genuine acoustical trauma situation. I cannot visit with an audiologist any time soon, and am a tad concerned. We live in a semi-rural environment, and sometimes guns go off in the vicinity, for whatever reason - but I don't always wear plugs outside in my own yard. Today, I went out to use my reel-mower and enjoy the sounds of nature - but, after nearly an hour, a single shot occurred from the vicinity of where the neighbors often target practice directly behind our property. It must have been muffled some by the new, Spring tree-growth between us, or it came from further out from where they usually shoot, because it did not cause any pain when the waves hit my ear - like it did a time prior. I do have a slight fullness, and a blown-speaker(ish) sound in one ear, and a moderate-to-heavy spike in both though (of course, maybe a bit of it's from stress). Anyhow, just a single shot from probably a 9mm - from at least 25 meters. Lastly, because it sounded like a 9mm pistol, I did the Distance Attenuation Calculator thing, and it said the 9mm's 160 dB was reduced to about 133 dB. Then I looked up the treeline attenuation potential and they put it at up to a 10 dB reduction - or an approximate 123 dB. Other than that, it was mostly cloudy, and that is supposed to mean it didn't disperse as much as on a clear day. Hence, I ask you - the one who knows guns/ears better than anyone: what perchance could one-solitary-low-caliber-shot, under those conditions, mean to my susceptible ears? Please advise, and thank you tremendously for reading, Dr. Cliff.

Hello Dr, My nephew has just been diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss. However, he has been complaining of this pain in his ear for 2 years now! No painkillers or spray works and upon MRI examination, the inside of the ears look normal is what all ENT consultants have said. Where is this pain coming from? It has affected my nephew's life massively and he is on the verge of dropping out of college because of the constant pain. The colder the months get the more he is in pain.

I have SNHL in both ears, in the very low decibel range..the loss doesn't affect conversational hearing at all..however, I have horrible head tinnitus that sounds like Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. I also have tinnitus in my right ear, but it's very high pitched and I've habituated to it without any problems, in fact, without having to even try...but habituating to the roar in my head is something I've not been able to achieve, I'm in my fifth year dealing with it...some days I have no tinnitus at all. I've been diagnosed with vestibular migraine, but I also have symptoms of Menieres as well as MdDS. How can I make sure I have the right diagnosis?

The comment regarding Acoustic Neuroma surgery is incorrect. You will not automatically lose your hearing if you have surgery. In fact, if it’s retro sigmoid or middle fossa surgery, you are more likely to preserve current hearing levels than lose hearing. Yes, still a chance you may lose hearing, but not guaranteed as video suggests.

Sir, I beg to differ. Seems there are 4 types of hearing loss. Here is #4: 4. Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD): The least common hearing impairment is ANSD. This type of loss requires more in-depth diagnostic testing, including a hearing evaluation with pure tones, otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing. In this type of hearing loss, the nerve fibers in the organ of hearing typically appear to be functioning well, but a breakdown of the information occurs along the pathway to the brain. A person may still have normal hearing to sounds, but the sound is not encoded properly at the brain. This type of hearing disorder is diagnosed more often in children, due in part to newborn hearing screenings that use automated ABR equipment and routine speech screenings by pediatricians and school systems, but can be present in adults as well.

Since 16 i've had a pretty severe ringing in my left ear. I believe it happened when I was outside my backyard shooting a 16 gauge shotgun. I slowly got worse and it's to the point where there's distortion when people talk. It sounds like a blown speaker and there's pain. I'm now 23 years old. I'm worried of further damaging my left ear to where the slightest sounds cause this sensitivity. I'm writing today to see if anyone has some better insight on what more to do. I saw 2 specialists, the first; saying sorry this happened to you but there's nothing we can do. The second; saying the left ear popping everytime you swallow will slowly alleviate the pressure/trauma and it should heal with time. Do you guys have an idea of what my left ear popping nearly every time I swallow is? I always believed it to be him just trying to give me hope. Lately, i've been hearing this ticking/pulsating sound in my left ear. It seemed like my hyperacusis was only getting worse from it. My ear would feel numb or itchy as well. Another symptom i've noticed is a heartbeat like sound in just my left ear. It tends to cause earaches or headaches, weirdest thing. Obviously stress and drinking can play a huge factor in this as well. I recently purchased air pod pros to be able to play pink noise and utilize transparency mode in order to aid my hearing. I've read posts where they say pink noise for a couple years each day will slowly act like a rehab for your ear. I've only been doing this for maybe 2 weeks. Do you guys find that pink noise was the best option? If so, how loud and what app do you prefer? Does anyone know of an app where you can play pink noise as well as listen to music or a podcast at the same time? Do you know of some ground breaking hearing aid that's unrecognizable that would help in public/busy areas? I was thinking some device that would reduce the noise input coming into your ear and producing a cleaner/lesser output back into the ear. The ringing in my ear is bearable but the loud high frequency distortion is the hardest part.I don't know how much longer i can take it. I tend to avoid loud areas as much as possible but sometimes you can't escape it. You do have to live a little and socialize right? I also play hockey and it's super loud in the rink. Or is it not worth the chance of having it get even worse? Because i cannot even imagine how life would be. Is there some hope in all of this? Paul Stamets has some interesting research with mushrooms/neurogenesis and what not. I do see posts shedding more light on this unfortunate reality which is motivating. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I shoot a lot and I shoot quite a bit indoors. Most of the gunshots are 160 db+ and the concussions created by firearms especially rifles indoors is intense.. For instance if you hold a piece of paper next to the muzzle of pretty much any rifle, it will shred it from the concussion alone (no bullet, just the muzzle blast) . I wear foam earplugs (32NRR) underneath ear muffs (26NRR) So I'm wearing pretty much the most protection possible. Yesterday, I was at the range and there were 5 or 6 other people shooting rifles, after half an hour my left ear started to hurt ( first time that's ever happened, even shooting without ear pro when hunting my ears ring but don't hurt) I'm wondering about the risk of percussive damage to the ear through bone conduction. Common sense would tell me despite wearing ear protection if my ears hurt, damage is probably being done... I wouldn't think ear pro would do anything for the percussive force of an explosion propagating through your bones/ tissue and stimulating the middle ear bones. My question is, would the concussion from shooting warrant any concern even if the ear canal is sufficiently protected?
@DrCliffAuD
@DrCliffAuD 5 жыл бұрын
I believe so yes. The damage occurs if the Hair Cells are jarred too much. Depending on the dB level and consistency of exposure, I do believe Bone Conduction could cause hearing loss.

I have been using behind-the-ear hearing aids since I was 4 years old. I was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss. I have no problem with my speech. I can hear but I don't understand. Is there any way to improve this problem? I don't know. I want to benefit from the knowledge of people who are more experienced than me. I want to connect with people like me. I wonder how their day went. I am the only person I know who wears a hearing aid. No one understands my problem. English is not my mother tongue. I used a translation program, sorry for my mistake.

If the hearing aid industry wants to make a profit, then they should advertise in a way that tells everyone that hearing loss IS NOT A DISABILITY. Because of the current stigma about HL, most patient does not want to have their ears checked, much more wear a hearing aids. Imagine if wearing hearing aids will be as common as wearing glasses. It's going to be a win-win for corporate bottom lines and for those people who need hearing aids. As more people demand for hearing aids, hopefully more and more manufacturers could supply and eventually drive prices down. Making it affordable.

Hi doctor cliff, I have a question. In NIHL, are the hair cells literally dead or just bent, twisted and overturned beyond proper functioning? If it is the later is it possible in future with appropriate methods we can physically untangle and straighten them and apply apply suitable "glue" to hold them straight? Sorry for wasting your time with this silly question.
@DrCliffAuD

I will be posting a video tomorrow that will show healthy hair cells and damaged hair cells. Damaged hair cells mostly disappear and leave nothing behind. Most research focus is on regenerating lost hair cells not repairing damaged ones.

Dr.Cliff, Every since i was 8 y/o i went to different octors for ear infection, i was treated with allergies medications. The last doctor i saw was back at the age of 12. He did a hearing test, where i was told i had little high frequency loss. I was alone with the nurse who was doing the test. Never understood what it ment. I now 27, and i feel i found myself focusing to understand when someone speak to me in a distant. I had a job as a call center once, and i could only understand some words through the phone, where i only last 1 weeks, i was told by the manger that i had a disability in which i needed help. What does little high frequency loss means? And how can it affect you?
