I have sleep paralysis so often it's usually more annoying than scary. I've also noticed that I seem to fall into REM very quickly (I'll find myself dreaming during a 10 minute nap), so I wonder if that's related.

Chris B Basically it has kind of adapted to me getting older and learning all the basic tricks you can find with a simple google search. Things stopped working and afterwards I have terrible derealization and depersonalization. I am just wondering if you have any more tips as someone who has had it for years.

I had chronic sleep paralysis as a teenager. It happened nightly and it was scary at first but eventually I realized it was just a weird half-dream/half-awake state. It actually led me down a path of sleep self-experimentation which lead to a lifetime of *lucid dreaming* and it turns out sleep paralysis is the primary gateway into dream lucidity. I've also taught myself how to get into sleep paralysis from a waking state, where i basically trick my body that I'm mentally asleep until it disconnects from the mind leaving me paralysed, which is quite a surreal experience! I often try to linger in sleep paralysis as long as possible since it's such a novel state of consciousness and I find it fascinating, but if I want to abort the experience I've found a useful technique is to HYPERVENTILATE on purpose, as it will wake the body up and you'll regain muscle control/tone almost immediately.

i agree lucid dreaming is easier to achieve through sleep paralysis bc i always know when i’m about to have an episode and therefore know exactly when i’m dreaming. anytime things take a turn for the worse the hyperventilation trick never fails. im always able to ride out on a breath to wake my body up

I usually hyperventilate if there's someone in the room so as to get their attention so that they can wake me up, but hyperventilating by its self hasn't worked for me. A trick I do is to concentrate on moving a small part of my body (like a finger) and once I do I break free. I'm also able to lucid dream, but I've never tricked myself into sleep paralysis :O I have some theories as to what things trigger sleep paralysis for me personally so maybe instead of avoiding them I should test them out and see if I can purposely trigger it, that would be an interesting experiment

Sorry if my English is bad. I hope that you can still understand me. I've struggle with it for a while and found some things that worked for me and it may help you, if you are still struggeling. The first I I do is try to calm myself when I wake up and find myself in a sleep paralysis. And I always close my eyes. Somtimes you can hallucinate and I find it too scary to look at the hallucinations. To prevent the sleep paralysis happening in the first place I try to have a regular sleep shedule, even on the weekends, trying to do calm things before going to bed (Having a routine), never sleeping in the afternoon (even if I'm really tired) only sleeping in my own bed if possible (No sofas, sleepovers, hotels ect).

I've had sleep paralysis off and on since I was about 12. I don't get the scary images, but I am paralyzed temporarily, and can't breathe. That first deep breath after it breaks is amazing, usually I just try to fall back asleep. It's worst when I'm stressed. If I'm super tired or stressed, I will essentially dream before I'm fully asleep, which is also weird lol I have never seen anyone about either, guess Iearned how to handle for now. Happened to me once when I was teenager. The way you explained it is very scientific and interesting. The way my mom explained it not so much. There was a superstition where I come from. Where if you wake up in the middle of the night and you can’t move but you still aware of your surroundings and you cant scream, you were visited by a non threatening gray creature that likes to hug you while you sleep. Its name is Jathom or Yathom. Told my mom why did it pick me? She says because it likes you .. 😂😂😂 Thanks again Kati for wonderful content! Keep it up #notificationgang

Hussein Nasser Haha that sounds a lot better than how my parents handled it. I've had sleep paralysis, or something like sleep paralysis for over a decade. One time my mom had it and she was so terrified she had a priest come over and bless the entire house, even after I told her I knew what was happening and that it really isn't a big deal. It is normal to have it once in your life. Yeah.. it was not a great time.

The first time it happened to me, I hallucinated. There was a dark figure at the foot of my bed laughing an evil laugh, I couldn't breathe, and as he shook my blanket, I could feel the wind on my legs. It started as I was falling asleep. I truly thought I was going to die and I prayed for God to help me. It stopped as suddenly as it started and when I shot out of bed, I turned the light on and was furious. I looked around me for the man who attacked me and when he wasn't there, I seriously thought it had been an evil spirit. Then I laughed at myself when I realized I had sleep paralysis just like my mom, only she yells in her sleep and would do so almost every night. Her doctor told her it's a symptom of narcolepsy and a neurologist I went to thought my medical problems were from a lack of deep sleep because your body repairs itself during that stage. The episodes continued to be terrifying, but without any hallucinations. I have learned to not panic and either try to fall back to sleep or to move just one part of my body. It happens a lot more when I'm sleep deprived. After my first son was born, I was severely sleep deprived due to a week of labor and when we had to leave him at the NICU, I tried to get some sleep and spent the whole hour or so getting stuck in sleep paralysis repeatedly. I gave up and we had to go back to the hospital. I believe alien abduction stories are sleep paralysis hallucinations. Many of them start with a person being in their bed and suddenly they can't move. Other people experience a cat or evil figure sitting on their chest and they can't breathe or move. Oh, I hallucinated one other time while taking a nap. My son and his friend were trying to set our kitchen on fire and I felt so helpless because I couldn't stop them. His friend wasn't even there and it all seemed so real. Most of my episodes happen when I'm napping, but I can go months without it happening.

Sleep paralysis can be accompanied by hallucinations. I had it once. I woke up hearing someone searching through the bookshelves -I knew it couldn't be my boyfriend because I had awaken briefly when he left for work- and then I realised I couldn't move at all. I knew that was sleep paralysis because it had already happened to me once, but I didn't figure just then that I was hallucinating, I thought there really was an intruder in my home, who probably hadn't realised I was there because I was totally concealed by the blankets. I had to lay there for several minutes wondering what would the best course of action be to defend myself once I was able to move again. By the time it happened, though, I couldn't hear anyone, so I got up and checked the appartment to make sure I was really alone - which I was, of course. It was quite terrifying.

I believe it's mostly from the spirit world like we cant see the creatures and demons bit they can see us so when were laying spread out and unable to move, were letting them attack us so that's why we cant breathe.

Great topic Kati, you rule! This is a constant thing for me since I was little, it used to be really scary. But then I started reading about it and now it is only uncomfortable. When I finally wake up I feel really really tired. It so weird because while I'm in that "state" I feel fear because of a nightmare but at the same time I kind of talk to myself and say "don't worry, it's this thing again, soon you'll wake up" so then I'm not scared but just waiting for it to stop.

I am a young grandmother I was snuggling with my grandbaby as that is like she likes to nap . She was laying on my arm . It felt like I woke up and looked up and there was a big demon shadow on the wall . It felt like the whole bed was shaking and was trying to be picked up . I tried calling my boyfriend for help . But I was only uttering his name so I thought . It was like I couldn't say it and I was trying so hard to cry for help . Till I finially woke up I was horrified . I used to have nighttares and nightmares for years where I was scared to go to sleep . But that was nothing compared to this . I was so scared . I have tears in my eyes just thinking about it 😪😪😔😔

This video is the bomb! I have had so many sleep problems over the years, but even my sleep doctor only focused on sleep apnea. When it comes to parasomnias, people stare at you blankly. I even had a psychiatrist insinuate that I was lying when I described my problems with night terrors. (Those night terrors went away when my circumstances became less stressful, by the way, NO thanks to said psychiatrist.) Calming down for sleep is so hard for me. Often my heart starts beating so fast when I lie down. I try the sleep hygiene tips, but it doesn’t seem to eliminate the fear my body feels. I will try the yoga stretches and breathing exercises you describe. I have never had sleep paralysis, so I almost didn’t watch this video. But I thought “hey, it’s a Kati video, I’ve got to watch it.” Boy, am I glad I did. Thanks for being so awesome Kati!!

I've had sleep paralysis many times since I was a kid. After a while, it became more of a stressful nuisance more than a frightening experience. Nowadays, on the rare occasion that I do get sleep paralysis, my dad doesn't believe it actually happened. He says that it's in my head, or that it was just a dream, and that it isn't a real thing, simply because he's never experienced it. However I've had nightmares about sleep paralysis, and I can tell when I am dreaming and when I am actually awake. It's very frustrating.

Ugh I know the feeling. I have sleep paralysis. But it happens when I fall asleep, not when I wake up (my rem sleep is messed up) the first time it happened to me, I saw a dark figure in my room and I heard voices. My body is trembling. It's so weird. When I told my dad the next day, he thought I was going crazy and that I was mentally unstable 🙄 luckily my dad talked to my neurologist and he's now very understanding and respectful about it 😁

Kati! You are the best, I worked with sleep specialists and went through SO MANY sleep studies trying to find a solution for my sleep paralysis. At one point my doctors were concerned that it may be early signs of narcolepsy, because my sleep paralysis would last for indeterminate amounts of time and was absolutely terrifying. It had gotten so bad at some points that I was afraid to go to sleep for fear of not being able to get up in the morning. On several occasions I was late to work because my sleep paralysis literally kept me from being able to get up on time. But the scariest part was always that no one knew what I was talking about when I tried to reach out for support. And it wasn't easy to find resources to show people when they asked what sleep paralysis was. Thank you so much for creating videos like this one to create opportunities for people to see that they are not alone and giving such great advice for where to start looking for answers. Thankfully, in working with my therapist through past trauma and finding solutions that worked for me to better manage my stress and my sleep habits, I haven't had to worry about sleep paralysis affecting my everyday life in over a year. In the end, the solution to so many of my problems was really rooted in self care that I was neglecting. I always look forward to your videos, thank you so much!

My first lucid dream happened by accident. I was having a stupid dream. I actually thought that in the dream. "This is a stupid dream. Let's back up and dream something else." The dream ran in reverse and then changed to something else. Lucid dreaming is really helpful against nightmares. Never had sleep paralysis. I can wake up, answer a question, go back to the same dream, wake up later and remember the question and the answer in the morning.

My first of many episodes of sleep paralysis i genuinely thought i died. In my head i just was existing in total blackness and no sound other then my own thougts. My second thought was i accepted that i had died and wanted to see what happend next. If its me and my thoughts for all eternity i think id be fine i think im hilarious lol. But when i woke up i jump up and boom my eyes close and i literally got put right back into sleep paralysis. Also if u get stuck my trick is wiggle either your toe or finger and swing it back and fourth and build up momentum to wake yourself up.

I went under the blanket and I heard it called my name "Kevin!" "Kevin!" It started laughing and I started crying!!!! ametcal2 I think that's called a hypnic jerk? And everyone gets it, from what I've read. Also FYI as someone who experiences a lot of sleep paralysis, it can actually occur as you're falling asleep too. Like you're starting to drift off and then mentally wake up but can't move.

If you shake yourself awake it's usually just your brain not moving easily into the next sleep cycle. When it doesn't go into that next stage easily it wakes us up.

@jamesmailing1119

I have a theory that our minds create the dream. The state happens first and then the mind invents the dream. The reason I believe this to be the case is because of that "jerk" you get when you're falling asleep. Every time (yes. I said every single time) that happens to me, I remember that I was having a dream that I stepped on a skateboard that somebody left lying around. To me it seems I stepped on the skateboard first and then I "jerk" (sometimes kicking the wall) awake. I think in actuality, the jerk happens first, then my mind invents the explanation, hence the skateboard.

Why can’t it be something beautiful and enjoyable to look at????? Lol I don’t like being scared

THANK YOU. Thanks for doing this video. I get sleep paralysis constantly, at times everytime I sleep during a day(which is usually more increments because SP makes you exhausted) I get it before and after sleeping, mostly after. I can identify the feeling of it starting so I can stop the "before" SP. It is hard to get your sleep on a normal schedule. I have bipolar, panic disorder, and a butt load of other acronyms and they mess it up. Currently I'm rapid-cycling with mixed features and can only sleep about an hour at a time. Perfect storm for sleep Paralysis(which I haven't had for a week so that's good) What's always amazing is doctors and clinicians not even knowing the definition of sleep paralysis when I tell them I have it constantly, but like you said it wasn't taught. It's extremely frightening, even though I have it on a consistent basis, and I even have psych meds increase the likelihood. Viibryd being the worst offender. Anyway, thanks for talking about it. I know most people have it once, but some of us have it sometimes everytime we sleep.

Night terrors (Not to be confused with nightmares. A lot of people do) generally but not always occurs in children that is a disruption of sleep. Thanks so much for this. I've suffered from this since my teens, so do my brother and father. Usually as we're falling asleep, but it can also happen as we awake. I had figured stress and sleeping in odd places or at odd times would trigger it. We all learned to cope with it, developed our techniques. We can often sense its going to happen, guess that comes with living with it for so long. My brother has figured changing sleep position helps him. I figured my wife can snap me out of it simply by calling my name; I can usually make a few sounds to alert her of what's going on.

I get sleep paralysis regularly and it still feels scary every single time. I didn't even consider looking into a sleep specialist! I've had sleep issues since I was a kid (PTSD nightmares, being unable to shut my ADHD brain off). Thank you for this video! Always so grateful for every video :)

I get sleep paralysis like 4times a month, sometimes I enjoy it but most of the times I don’t because it’s just scary, but during one my sleep paralysis my great grandmother who’s dead was next to me speaking to me and when I got scared she made me calm and we had a nice conversation but I believe it’s connected to the spirit world after that experience
