Slow living. It’s a term you’ve likely heard because the movement is rapidly gaining popularity but maybe your understanding of what it actually is, is kinda vague. In this video, I am going to debunk slow living and finally define for you what it is. As well as give you three easy tips to start implementing slow living in your life right now.
If you're new here, welcome! I'm Madi, creating videos about minimalism and slow living every Wednesday. In my videos you will see my minimalist home, my capsule wardrobe, decluttering, inspiration for slow living with kids, intentional living, minimalist finances, things I no longer buy, things I no longer own, things I buy more of as a minimalist, and just overall my passion and inspiration for simple living!

This is not a revolutionary idea…it’s the way life was when I was growing up. It’s sad that we need all these fancy terms and instructions…but, I am very happy to see that more people are longing to return to something that was better. Your videos are very well done, and your family is blessed to have you.

As someone who was raised by parents who have taught me to go-go-go all the time and then shamed me for choosing to stay home with my children and homeschool them and be a homemaker, this is very revolutionary. Not all of us were blessed enough to live like this, and this is very new to many people.

In Italy it’s simply our way of life; Vita Lenta, joy in simplicity and mundane. Savoring the most simple things, even doing the laundry! I am now in San Diego and I am still living as if I am in Italy. And taking time to eat your meal and make it beautiful is pure magic to us Italians. The fast pace of life and hustle culture here is a silent killer of the soul. ❤️

Slow living, to me, means embracing the reality that we can't have everything and finding contentment in what we can afford and possess. It's about living life to the fullest with what we have, rather than constantly yearning for more. Instead of longing for additional possessions, I now focus on maximizing the value of what I already have.

I did a complete 360 with my life back in May. I had been wanting out of my hometown for a few years and was finally able to take the step. I had a mortgage of $1,000 a month and was in a city of 750,000 people. I went to a city two and a half hours away with less than 2,300 people , bought a home with a mortgage of $200 a month. I cannot relay how many reasons there are that I made the right decision. No more waiting in any kind of traffic. I have one stoplight in my town. No rude people to stand in front of or behind at the stores. No multiple home invasions, thefts or assaults. Seven farmers markets in my area. Instantaneous service no matter where I go. The list goes on and on. A simpler, happier life can be accomplished if you put in the effort to make the change!

Definitely slow living and minimalism is different for each individual. I work and study and my kids do sport (because they want to). Having a minimalist wardrobe has made my life massively easier. Also decluttering my home means less to clean. I see people rush and up my backside while I’m driving and to stop stress I get up earlier enjoy the sunshine I leave home earlier so I’m not stressing. Small things can bring your day slower but still do what you need to do such as work and study and run a household.

Your videos have really raised my awareness of how often everyone around me talks being busy, as if it's relevant to their status & value. I loved the example of throwing chicken nuggets in the back of the minivan, which is a reality for so many parents. You've also previously said children typically means chaos because that's what we're taught to believe. I often need weeks to unpack & reflect on your videos. I am so grateful for your work here on KZbin! I loved learning about the start of the slow living movement. I can see it because when we go to Greece I feel so happy. Our trips are a slower pace of life without a TV & few possessions, but lots of nature, people, books & good food.

Good for you, Madisun, for discovering in your youth a life based in Biblical principles. Slow living came to me too late. I say too late because I paid a price before living the right life. It wasn't until in my recovery from late-stage 3 cancer, in my quest to understand how I could get so sick, that I learned life's best lessons. I love Proverbs 31 because it speaks to God's ideal woman. I love Philippians 4:8 because it speaks to the right mindset. What we think about, we bring about: thoughts = feelings = actions = results. Monitoring our thoughts is imperative to living a good and fulfilled life. Thank you, Madisun, for sharing what you share. It'll help arrest the minds of those who need saving before going down the wrong path as I had more than 25 years ago. 🥰😍

This makes me think about how to pull this into the classroom as a teacher. I already have an unusual classroom for an 8th grade history teacher - taking cues from Montessori and keeping it sensory friendly and calm. Now you’ve got me thinking about the challenge of removing *rush* from my lessons. Keep up the good work Madisun🎉

It’s interesting how Biblical concepts become trendy without people necessarily knowing their origins. Back in 2005 I was a work-a-holic…it took 3 auto accidents to get me to stop, slow down and look around and pray about my purpose and calling. It’s always people, of which I never had time for when I was working 82 hours a week for months on end every month! Becoming disabled with Fibromyalgia has been nothing more but miraculous in getting to know the meaning of life, and get to know Abba even more… The biblical purpose of minimalism is contentment…being thankful for all we have and not coveting what others have. Abba God supplies all our “needs” not wants although sometimes He may, in any case He always knows best. He’s working and I’m so thankful! May He continue to reveal Himself to you and all who live for Him, Praise Jesus!

Hi, new subscriber here. My journey toward minimalism and slow living started when I was pregnant with my second baby (I have four now). It has sometimes been baby steps and sometimes going backwards but I praise the Lord that He led me in this direction of "less is more" and keeping things simple so my kids can be kids. Anyway, your videos are an inspiration and so beautiful! Thank you for sharing your life, thoughts, time with us on KZbin ❤

Thanks for your concise introduction and booktips. I can really find myself in your values of what you seek in life, apart from me not being a parent (yet). I think they are important values that fit with humans that long for a stronger connection with nature and other people. I also quickly realized while watching this and reflecting what my own life looks like, that I am at the very beginning of the process of slowing down and living more in accordance with my own preferences and pace. Reading through all the comments here is nice, there are so many positive people here and you've liked or quick commented on all of them. I made a very long post about how my life is very fast paced and the moments where I can find my peace, but decided not to include it here. I love writing, even if it is just youtube comments, but there is a time and a place for everything.

Thank you for the reminder about how I choose to perceive time. It is so easy to get caught up in the rush and hustle (employers certainly love it) and lose track of being mindful and intentional about how we carve out our beautiful days. It makes me think of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet and the “Bizzy Backson” (busy, back soon)…it’s so easy to get sucked back in. I don’t think you are in Hawaii any more, but I am on Oahu and just discovered your channel yesterday - enjoying your great content and philosophy. I’m 50 and my kids are teenagers now, but minimalism and slowness is something I have have embraced for years (along with frugality, self-sufficiency, urban homesteading etc). I think it is especially important when the kids are little.

Thanks so much for the book recommendations. I bought the audio version of "In Praise of Slowness". I'm enjoying it so far. For 3 years, my partner and I slow traveled Europe full time, often staying 3 months in a location so we could live like locals. One thing that really stood out to us: in Bordeaux France, frriends would meet for picnics directly after work. They'd sit on the grass and open a bottle of wine and have picnic baskets full of food and just leisurely talk by the river. No one was frantically rushing to the subway or the freeway. It made such an impact on me to see people living at a slower pace. It's harder being back in America now because the culture worships frantic pace and too much work.

good video-ty on the thought of time... it's funny how some days or sometimes time is so big and full and slower-adventures I've had when I was younger especially-some days were so big and broad-and to use a word my mom liked-delicious-... and other days just seem to race by-I mean like we can go out shopping and get back home and unload groceries and it seems like the whole afternoon has gone by... which brings me to an old Mexican proverb I want to share"... he who takes his time, time follows behind him like a patient donkey."

I’ve been a working mom for the last 10 years and have recently left a job that I loved so that I can spend my time more intentionally with and for my family. I am pleased to the point of giddiness with the major life shift but feel like there is so much build up to chip away at and want/need to do (decluttering, neglected home repair items, meal prep and budgeting, birthdays and the upcoming holidays, volunteering at school events for my big kids and caring for my 11 month old, Wife-ing) that I still often find myself rushing. I’m definitely more at peace than before knowing there will be more time for these things but in the meantime maybe you have some tips for when the feelings of anxiousness/urgency sneak up on me?

I make time for my nap, I make time to enjoy each mouthful of food I consume, I make time for my bath, making it special, I do love adding fresh herbs to my bath like rosemary flowers, chammamile flowers, epsom salt and bicarb soda.. and watch my favourite video like yours.. and I make time for sitting in the sun, walking barefoot and listening to the birds.. eating mainly 90% fruit, I don't need to cook, cleaning is minimal so I have more time for me and prayer.. ✨🙏🌸 honestly, going into even 5 minutes of the hustle of the city, I feel sick, I shake and I don't like feeling anxious, stress or any negative emotions no more.. I choose how I feel in every situation.. if its unavoidable then I sit and pray then react.. ✨🙏🍉

This video blessed my soul! I am a newlywed 🌻 I have 2 daughters, one newborn, and 3 bonus daughters! Decluttering and slow living is my personal favorite. However, I’m coming into an entirely different space where fast movement and lots of clothes, food, and all the things is present! Any tips on getting your spouse to hop on the slow living train?

I am new around here. Great video. I live a fairly slow, simple life, but I find that I have a hard time slowing down my mind, I am always filling my mind with more and more content, goals, etc. My brain is just too full. I need to find a way to declutter my brain. haha

Hi. I just found you and watched a couple of your videos. Love them. I am 51 years and have been a preschool teacher for 23 years. I work part time. I was wondering if you could help me understand why I feel guilty when I spend time relaxing and feel like I wasted so much time. Like not doing chores or being productive. 💖

Slow living starts with eliminating the people and activities that suck your time and energy. If it does not benefit my intention of family and self care first, then it’s off my plate with no regrets or apologies. I have a long way to go with mindful consumerism but I will get there.

All I want to do now is go home. Go back to basics and live slow.. City life is not for me. Going home in a month and I hope all goes well..❤

It’s kinda hard to do slow living unless you do KZbin and have enough views or any job or that sort. Otherwise most of us have to be up super early sit in traffic and get home late just to do it all over again the next day exhausted from rushing dinner after work and rushing spending time with kids cus we have to ge to bed to get up like a slave 🙄

Slow living is not a new concept, it goes back to the greek philosophies hundreds of years ago. It was also a 1960's movement but under another name. However your modern day outlook is very relevant as life is so much more busy because people have become more materialistic. Good on you in valuing your family and time. Social media and having your life on a phone is in my opinion is the modern day stress producer.
