One of the most beautiful live music I have seen was Bedhead at Emo's. They started very softly, so soft most didn't know they had started. We all went up to close to stage. Hypnotizing but so intimate. I see it as everyone was exhausted by loud fast music. Codeine was so slow they must count. I think people moved from White Light... to the Third Velvets album. This was the beginning of slowcore in my recollections

The best genre!! Super psyched you mentioned hood, I love how they also blend slowcore with electronic musc and idm. Love the deep dive you did with the aspects of slowcore, lofis defos a large aspect, and imo the genre wouldn't sound the same if it wasn't for the 4 track tape machine! Absolutely loved this video, can't wait for what's next!

knew you'd like this one! hood is a new discovery for me, super cool music. i love the way slowcore bands use vocals as texture, in a way like shoegaze, but in slowcore i feel it's more atmospheric, with different effects & looping used to create a unique sound!

I liked this little docu. Slowcore is the nephew of shoegaze. I always feel sedated when listening to bedhead by some weird happy/sad/slowdown drug. I also remember this little side project from Galaxy 1000 : Pierre Etoile. Very slowcore, happy but not at the same time. Only one EP I think. Very nice topic fore a video, mr Luka ! Have to try some of the unknown names.

Loving this, inspiring. I'm going to check some of these bands. You could loose yourself in this sound. I like the comments at the end. The possibility that the sound was a reflection of hardship. Although today you have access to unlimited tools in a modern DAW, when the genre first materialised you had little access. The limited gear pallet always leads to greater creativity.

thanks stuart! i definitely find giving yourself limitation can inspire creativity :)

@@pedalpartners Daphne Oram made a device that could read graphite images and translate them into sound. It was a big deal when the science museum putvit on display. The gut in charge mentions the excessive amount of software and gear available and said that some of the best music being created, outside of the mainstream is made by folk who for whatever reason have a limited pallette.

Good stuff all 'round. Bedhead was amazing to see live, more like a guitar orchestra (3 guitars+bass). Go back and listen to Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Session, which is a direct line to Mazzy Star and blues/americana influenced slow stuff. Later JAMC, Tram, Movietone, Hayden, Acetone. The other direction was the minimalism of midwest indie/post rock, which had great slow burn albums by Slint, the for carnation, Aerial M, Papa M (especially live in a shark cage), Palace, Songs Ohia, and the two heartbreaking/breathtaking solo records by Jason Molina, Pyramid Electric Co. and Let me go. Cap it off with the moody, glacial, early stuff by GodspeedYouBlackEmperor and A Silver Mount Zion (chamber strings + barren guitar dystopias). Big giant rabbit hole to dive into, but some of us have been here the whole time :)

Low, who I belatedly discovered through their latest album and have since caught up with their discography (17 albums I believe) has both evolved and stayed true to their "slowcore" aesthetic. The latest work, which I saw played straight through at a club show in Madison, Wisconsin, this summer, is something I've described to others as industrial folk music. Alan's guitar now grinds on Mimi's soaring ethereal vocals and together they wash over you in waves that stimulate and sooth at the same time -- the result is truly ecstatic. I think, for them, their geographic grounding from living in Duluth, Minnesota, with its short brilliant summers and long dark frigid winters, is likely a big influence, allowing them to gestate their music without the interference of urban America. Listening to the scope of their work tells me they know what they want to achieve and are satisfied to be themselves. Plus, after chatting with Alan and Mimi before the show, they are pretty chill and regular kind of Upper Midwest/Northwoods folks.
