This video is part one of our examination of how surface mount technology (SMT) is used to assemble PCBs and transform them into PCBAs.
SMT is the process whereby the key components (SMDs or surface mount devices) are mounted onto the PCB board. It exists primarily to increase the speed of electronic device production as components can be attached quickly.
We will look at the first 2 elements of the PCBA production process on an SMA (surface mount assembly) line in detail: Solder paste application and component placement.
In particular, we'll cover:
- Pre-assembly steps (PCB designed, need to order SMDs/components)
- Solder paste application
- Potential solder paste issues
- Component placement process
- PCB positioning
- Pick & place types
- Vacuum nozzles and grips
- Vision inspection (have critical components been picked and oriented correctly?)
After watching this video, importers will have a much clearer understanding of how the PCBAs used in their electronic devices are actually being made, and the intricate production process that your suppliers are undertaking on your behalf.
