Great introductory video! I remember my first experiences learning about sofubi years ago and would've loved to have found a video like this back then, it would've been very helpful! Sofubi is honestly such an interesting genre of toys and art: I'm an action figure enthusiast, and although it's not in my usual wheelhouse I have nothing but love and appreciation for this genre of toy. There's something so awesome about seeing artist's designs move from concept to sculpt to production through this lens, and the unique production methods and materials for the toys themselves result in some of the wildest things you'll ever see cast in plastic. There are figures made of sofubi that you would never see ever attempted/wouldn't be able to be made in plastics usually used for action figures and the like, and I always enjoy seeing what creators make from afar and getting ahold of what I can when I can. Good stuff.

Nicely informative on a subject I'm only vaguely familiar with! I do have one example, a 'King Walder' I got to compliment my Henshin Cyborg, unfortunately it turned out to be about a head shorter than the Cyborg, so displayed next to him, he looks like a dwarf! No matter, he's a nice piece of work, slightly more complex in design and articulation than Sofubi usually are, and even the box is artfully displayable! Again, thanks for the info!👍👍👍

oh awesome! depending on when you come out here, there's SO many different events and conventions going on all year round. should be fun ;) and while I've never personally had anything autographed, I have seen others get their goods signed so it should be fine. and possibly for a fee (depending on the artist) they sometimes do those mini 'shikishi' autograph art boards too sometimes. TBase, One Up and Mandarake will be your best bet for new and old sofubi for sure ;) have fun! ^0^ and thanks for watching!

@@charliemakintoys You are welcome. I do have a quick material question. I've been researching and experimenting for years on this stuff when it comes to the tool making process, but this is the first time Bronze plating has come up. From may experience and working with groups that have made my stuff, they have always used a layer of nickel then Copper. Is Bronze a new thing? Let me know and thanks.
@charliemakintoys
@charliemakintoys 2 жыл бұрын
@@Vancegeoffmen2 You know what, you are absolutely correct. I made a mistake, lol. I was using my Japanese Sofubi magazine and Japanese websites as references and the kanji characters for bronze (青銅) is literally "blue+copper" and misread it for that. Sorry! ^-^'

interesting, I imagine a great pursuit for creators plying the craft and learning Japanese would be to translate publications like Creators Sofvi. Are there any efforts like this that you know of?
@charliemakintoys
@charliemakintoys Жыл бұрын
even for fun- that actually sounds like a good idea to try someday ;) but I personally haven't heard of anyone working on an actual translated version of Creators Sofvi for international audiences. As of right now it's just the one single magazine with no new issues for the future :( I hope that changes someday. I want more! ;)

6:24, how would you suggest overseas buyers to actually do? resellers will send them, but original artists mostly don't, even ones that aren't tied to copyright rules I had to relay the knowledge on how a Japanese could send their doujinshi product overseas through years of connection through their local friends of friends, and meet in person, until they are certain to send me one directly, though, I'm pretty sure its not really that most Japanese who are 'afraid' to act, as I've sold and sent my fanmade figurines to them. gotta be sneaky and try to be all local methods until its too late, they have to finish what they started(asking recipient in alphabet because certainly my local post office don't read kanjis)😂
@charliemakintoys
@charliemakintoys Жыл бұрын
Now more than ever it's become increasingly easier for buyers/collectors outside of Japan to get sofubi from Japan. But you're right, not every artist does international shipping but majority of them (especially the popular ones) make a lot of effort to get their toys to everyone (especially to not lose out to re-sellers). If you follow your favorite creator on Twitter/Instagram they occasionally might announce (in English) that they're doing international shipping. But I also highly suggest following stores like "TBase", "OneUp", "MyPlasticHeart", etc because they usually offer international shipping and are partnering up with more and more sofubi artists all the time. In fact, those type of shops will usually have exclusive special color-ways only available through them which makes it even more special. ;) twitter.com/TBASE_English

@@charliemakintoys oh cool! glad to hear that at least the sofubi niche has some cover. I can use them as reference I'm on the garage kit side of the drama and its non cooperative and both sides strange stereotypical blaming isn't helping.. as a 3rdworlder I can't even afford pirated garage kit so I just make what I wanted myself instead, turns out that old blog pictures and me trying to piece things out with learning from scratch without Japanese(now passed N3 while learning it), is more than enough, what did anyone know, mine's good enough for Japanese small doujin-fandom, lots of unique character designs to make too and asked permission I did😂

Sorry, I'm not sure how creators outside of Japan produce their sofubi toys since I actually live in Japan- but I've spent the past year slowly integrating into the sofubi creators scene out here (mostly through Japanese twitter). I'm currently working on my own prototypes for my original characters to become toys and will create videos in the future documenting the process if you want to follow along ;) it's a very long, difficult and expensive process lol
