Funny thing is they aren't even analogies, they are just more reductionist. Sound is actually gas molecules following the same newtonian kinematics. All the abstract terminology in acoustics confuses people. "Damping" is actually a niche abstract term for "restitution" in elastic collisions. So his usage of a newton's cradle to demonstrate it is incredibly apt, because newton's laws of motion are what are actually at play. Green glue is effective because green glue and sheet rock have a low coefficient of restitution .

If you have loose vinyl instead it’s harder for the sound to go through. It’s like trying to put a nail through something thick and lose. You can’t. Or like putting a nail in wood on the edge with nothing under it
