I mainly work as a subtitler these days. That was a really good overview, but I think you meant to say "2 lines per subtitle". Two per frame would be really quick! Also another good rule is the subtitle gap rule. 2-4 frames between each subtitle or 80-120 ms.

Oh indeed, it's not a frame :D good catch, thanks!

Another very good video Adrian! In my MSc I did half of my translation portfolio on subtitling TED talks and it's so much fun - though it does require a very long time, especially if the speakers are super speedy (as it is the case with Italian). Another rule I learned, and please correct me if I am wrong, is that you italicise what someone is saying if they're not in frame. So for example if it's a phone call, what the person we don't see says speaking through the phone would be italicised. I really enjoying subtitling and currently do offer this service, though I'm just starting out and haven't had any clients yet. Fingers crossed I will get some work with subtitling as I really enjoy it and got super positive feedback from the videos I subtitled at uni. In the meanwhile I'll keep on practicing and improving.
@Freelanceverse

Hi Arianna thanks so much for the feedback, really appreciate it! And yes, you are right! Just looked it up and you can definitely use italics for that :) thanks for letting me know. Good luck with building your career and let me know if I can help you with anything.

Landed my first job as a freelancer offering subtitling and translation service today so here I am trying to learn everything about the job title and what the proper mindset is for taking on the tasks. I was able to apply through a job posting online, took the test and to my surprise I passed. I didn't know anything about subtitling until now and have little knowledge in translation although I'm pretty fluent in my native language. Thank you so much for sharing and I'm definitely binge watching your videos to learn more! Though a little bit anxious, I'm looking forward to learning more about this skill and how I can build a career from it.

Hi Adrian! Thank you for this excellent video, it's really helpful! I've got a question on subtitling: when we need to add text such as the appellation of the speakers or the banner appearing in the video, how should we do that? I found out it's impossible to just add it as normal subtitles before the speakers actually speak (not enough gap & problem with char/sec). Are there any certain guidelines on that? @Freelanceverse
@Freelanceverse 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Maria, thank you so much for your kind words and for supporting the channel. That means a lot! Do you have experience in translation or other services in the language industry and are now expanding to subtitling? Or are you going straight into the subtitling genre? That is an important distinction, because if you already have clients as a translator, you'd be surprised how many of them also need subtitlers. So as a first step, I'd let your clients know that you also offer this service. If you don't have previous clients, then I'd look for media and publishing houses. Especially in the north of europe, there are a bunch of them. It depends on your language pair of course, but if you have a relatively common language, it is likely that streaming services like hulu, hbo, netflix etc. need your service. Another approach is looking for companies that have subsidiaries in multilingual countries. A lot of Swiss companies for examples need their video content in many different languages because they have employees in different language regions. So every training video, every info sessions needs to be subtitled. In order to gain experience in the field, I would probably do volunteer work for your favourite youtubers or charity organisations. That's a great way to build up a portfolio.

@Freelanceverse
@Freelanceverse 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Olena, the best is to charge it by the hour honestly. That's what I do. Then you dont need to worry about per minute rates as it can be very misleading (some videos are full of speech whereas others are more scenic). So just charge by the hour. Yes, I get my jobs through agencies and direct clients that I found mostly through recommendations or through the different approaches I mentioned in that video.

It depends, what is the task you're referring to? Transcription, timecode spotting, subtitle translation, all together? The rates example that I gave was for transcription and timecode spotting. In this case, your mentioned rate would be approximately $13 per hour, which before tax is far too little if you ask me.

For live programming there are a lot of captioners using speech-to-text (or respeaking as you called it) there could also be a stenographer listening to the audio and transcribing it in realtime using a steno machine. At least here in the United States you have to be certified by the NCRA before you can be employed. Schooling has a 98% dropout rate. But, the pay is fantastic 👍🏻.

Just a side note: since you mentioned that words should not be broken in a sentence to keep them grammatically correct, in this example wouldn’t it preferable to have “welcome back” in the first line? For all these three you can probably do around 2-3 video minutes per hour. So check how many video minutes there are and then you can offer your hourly rate times that.

Thanks for the video but what about the rate of the translation itself without the transcription and the time coding? And how much is the proofreading for other translators?
@Freelanceverse
@Freelanceverse 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Naira, translation without the subtitling is simply normal translation service, so you should charge that with your per word rate. Proofreading is usually about 50% of your translation rate per word. Or you can charge it by the hour.

I'm new in the industry, is 2 dollar per output minute *that* little? (Translation only)
@Freelanceverse
@Freelanceverse 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kresten, yes that is quite little. You can estimate about 150 words of speech per video minute (of course that's an average). So with 2 dollar you're in the ball park of 1 cent per word which is ridiculously low.

Hello Adrian, interesting video! When you work on subtitles tasks, do you charge per hour or per minute? How does it work?
@Freelanceverse
@Freelanceverse 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Thibaud, luckily I can charge all my subs work by working hour. Some clients charge per video minute or even words which I really don't like. You never know how tricky a video is to subtitle so I like to charge by the hour as long as it took me.
