Tips on:
Slides

I subbed in a lot of schools and ran across horns that were unplayable, not because the slides were mixed up, but an inexperienced tech at a local shop didn't know stop arms weren't interchangeable. I figured out quickly to pull a valve slide with the lever down. If I got a "pop" I knew the stop arm was in the wrong place!

My cousin played the French Horn in high school and then in the US Army band. I'll be sure to share this video with her!

Loving your videos! Really great quality and very informative. Quick question: Why do french horns use strings instead of the sort of linkages you see on rotary valve tubas and such? Are there french horns that use mechanical linkages?

Thanks for watching. Back in the day, the only linkage we ever saw was the trombone rotor on the Bach, and it was terrible. Very loud and clunky. Rotors for the most part were tied. They were much smoother and more quiet. As time has gone on, more of all the instruments are adopting ball/socket linkage or the uniball style linkage. On the tubas it makes a little more sense because you can have a solid driver from a distance, but on f horn the leverage is different. On the F Horn, the string linkage is infinitely customizable where the mechanical linkage is pretty set. I don’t know if it’s ease of manufacture or what the thinking is. Almost every rotary tuba I see now is mechanical, and a growing number of French Horns. I would guess that most every F Horn I see across the bench that is made off shore is linkage, but that is just from me sitting here recalling, not any scientific data. I know I prefer the string tie linkage, but no one asked me! Ha

There's an engineering reason for the string linkages as well: with a minibal or other mechanical link, the force required to turn the valve changes as the valve rotates, with the least resistance at the middle of the stroke. With string, the force required to rotate the valve is completely even from one end of the stroke to the other. The difference is... well, small, for a 90-degree main valve. For 120-degree change valves, it's much more noticeable.

Watching you lean on the horn with the bell on the bench makes me cringe.
