It appears to me that this application fundamentally publishes out to the web (via the search activity) a list of what components I am buying, and how many of them I get. Careful review of the data can also yield some information as to when I am building it. Since information scavenging is so prevalent these days there seems to be good reason to waive-off the convenience of this application. Some folks may not want to share that data.

It's not making it publicly viewable unless you make your project publicly viewable and start publicly sharing links, but it is sending data to a 3rd party (distributor). I think it's a non-issue if you were to already take your BOM and upload it to digikey (or anywhere else), that company will then have the copy of your BOM and you would be bound by their usage agreement.

@@Zachariah-Peterson Thank you for your response! I don't think it is "publicly" displaying the data, it just may be doing so via unencrypted channels. I have learned that Altium is primarily exchanging data with Octopart, and then they go out and find sources. In doing so, specific company-related data may be removed from the search, so that helps. If I have a relationship with the vendor I can exchange BOM data over a secured process though. I may be being a bit nervous, but most of the stuff I work with is at least ITAR controlled, and some folks I know work with more classified products. Given that, even cursory sale of data (including search parameters) on the internet concerns me. Luckily, at least these days, most of the critical IP is in software or firmware, so it won't be exposed through the BOM.
