What is the Anthropic Principle? - Dr. Kurt Wise, Devotional Biology

In the course of the last century, scientists have discovered a rather long list of characteristics of the universe that indicate it is a very special place, and that we occupy a special place in it. The list of these characteristics is so long and diverse that it draws most people-even unbelievers-towards a concept called the cosmological anthropic principle, or anthropic principle (which we will abbreviate in this text as AP). According to the anthropic principle, the universe appears as if it was fashioned with man in mind. In this video, Dr. Wise goes through some of the characteristics of the universe that suggest-even to unbelievers-that the universe was designed with humans in mind.
"Devotional Biology: Learning to Worship the Creator of Organisms" is an amazing opportunity to learn high school biology from one of the top creation scientists in the world, paleontologist Kurt Wise. Dr. Wise has designed this unique class to fully integrate a Christian worldview with the biological sciences. The result is a completely new way to approach biology. He has taught this class for over a decade to high school and college students, and is now making it available for the first time in video format.
Dr. Wise earned his BA in geology from the University of Chicago, and his MA and PhD degrees in paleontology from Harvard University. He founded and directed the Center for Origins Research at Bryan College and taught biology there for 17 years. He then led the Center for Theology and Science at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for 3 years, before founding and directing the Center for Creation Research and teaching biology at Truett McConnell University for the last 7 years. His fieldwork has included research in early Flood rocks in the Death Valley region, late Flood rocks in Wyoming, and post-Flood caves in Tennessee.

Apollo 1 burned during the test at 16.7 psi pure oxygen (per what I read today -- previously I had read it was at 15 psig or twice atmospheric pressure), higher than atmospheric pressure. The Apollo missions were changed to 40/60 nitrogen/oxygen at atmospheric pressure during launch, and about 5 psia pure oxygen in space. Two things caused the deaths of the astronauts. One, the hatch (changed from previous missions) required several minutes of unscrewing multiple bolts to open. Two, the hatch opened INWARD due to previous issues with outward hatches popping out, and so had the cabin "air" pressure holding it shut. Either would have prevented the doomed astronauts from escaping.

It was Apollo 1 that exploded on the launch pad. And they did not change the mixture for the space program during Apollo because it was cost and weight prohibitive. The explosion occurred because they were doing a pressure test on the capsule and wanted to prevent external air from coming in so they pressurized it so that air would leave the capsule only. I believe they had it up to 15PSI of pure Oxygen. After the explosion they decided to pressurize the capsule during tests and before launches with the normal atmosphere that would bleed off during launch and be replaced with a pure Oxygen environment in space at very low PSI's. I believe it was around 4. This did not affect the astronauts as they were already on a pure oxygen diet in their space suits for several hours before launch so as to prevent the bends. They recognized the fire hazard danger only after the explosion, the reason being that they had been successful, lucky, with the pure O2 environment from Mercury through Gemini. The Russians did use a Nitrogen and Oxygen environment if memory serves during the period. So they went on a binge for the next year to remove anything that might either spark or burn. It was due to this work that Apollo 13 was able to restart their CM with all that condensation that you saw in the movie, which was completely accurate. Had that work not been done, we probably have lost the crew of Apollo 13 rather than Apollo 1.

I have heard that in amber gas bubbles showed the earth had a lot more oxygen in the past then now. Could that relate to people being able to live much longer and animals (dinosaurs being so big)? Could it relate to the catastrophically that was part of cause for the great flood?

This is a great lecture. However, it is marred by some technical errors. Dr. Wise twice says that the atmosphere is 0.3% CO2, but the atmosphere is actually about 0.04% CO2. Dr. Wise also says that helium and hydrogen are poisonous gases. Neither gas is poisonous. Just like nitrogen, helium is inert and is dangerous only as an asphyxiant (it causes suffocation if it completely displaces the air). Hydrogen can also be an asphyxiant and is also highly combustible with oxygen.

Dr. KURT WISE IS a very intellectual man those who in his field deny God only push rubbish and fantasy nothing but pure rubbish with no value. Helium isn't a poisonous gas actually. Unless you mean that it would accumulate in the lungs and prevent them from picking up the oxygen it needs, because the lungs would be too full of helium to be able to accommodate the oxygen as well

I think the confusion comes from a misunderstanding of what the anthropic principle is. At its most basic it is just 'Life can only arise in places where it is physically possible for life to arise' So of course we exist in a universe that supports life, it would be far more miraculous if we lived in a universe that can't support life but we were still there. Also you keep conflating 'life' with 'humans'. You can change plenty of stuff about the planet and life would still thrive even if humans went extinct.

Nothing appears out of nothing now days and we don't have a reason to believe that it happened before , unintelligent mater knows not how to make more of itself further more why would non existing matter turn into existing mater on it own reconnaissance , unscientific and unsupported that would be .The reason we think that is because that's the only way we can explain life logically ,what we are missing is that life was created by someone with the means to do it ,no unexplained miracles needed ,just like any mind bugling assembly lines ,no miracles present as it may look so to a untrained eye , but determined intelligent hard work .

God creating things at least works logically because hes an all powerful God but how does DNA make itself randomly by chance? Makes no sense that organisms more complex than space shuttles could just assemble themselves from non living materials by chance. @@tpc1016 Science has discovered many incredible and amazing things in the living cell, however it has done little to nothing to explain how this amazing cell could have come about by purely natural cause. Please explain by what logic an intelligent person would conclude a cell with a bidirectional transport system where the Kinesin and Dynein motors move along Microtubules in opposite directions, stepping around each other and avoiding obstacles evolved w/o an intelligence behind it all. I do not need ANYONE to tell me such a system was or wasn't created any more than I need anyone to confirm for me a building had a builder. The mere fact it is there proves it was designed.

When you see a building and have never been downtown to the courthouse to view the building permits, then you don't really know it had a builder because I was too lazy to go view the building permits and blueprints and tax records.
