What is the Assumption of Mary?

What happened to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, at the end of her life?
The Assumption of Mary is the name of the teaching that Jesus Christ took Mary up to heaven with him body and soul at the end of her earthly life.
Assumption = "taking up" = "taking up into heaven"
This teaching has been upheld by the Church for centuries in the writings of Church Fathers and in the Church's liturgy, but it was formalized in by Pope Pius XII in in his 1950 apostolic constitution, Munificentissimus Deus (44):
"We proclaim and define it to be a dogma revealed by God that the immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven."
Why is the Assumption of Mary important?
If the Blessed Virgin Mary was immaculately conceived, that is, she was conceived and born without sin so that Jesus Christ could also be born without sin, then the question is: What happened to her at the end of her life?
Through Jesus Christ, we will experience the resurrection of our bodies, not just souls. Jesus rose from the dead body and soul. He ascended into heaven body and soul. His body is in heaven. On the Last Day, our bodies, too, will rise. People often forget this.
The Assumption of Mary is important because she precedes us in the resurrection of the body. Her body, which was without sin, is glorified in heaven.
Where is the Assumption of Mary in the Bible?
There is no Bible verse describing the Blessed Virgin Mary going to heaven as an event. The Book of Acts focuses on the Acts of the Apostles, not the life of the Mother of God. In the Gospel of John we know that Jesus asked the Apostle John to take care of his mother, so tradition states she lived with him until the end of her life.
The Book of Revelation does reference "a woman clothed in the sun with the moon under her feet" in heaven (Revelation 12:1-2).
St. Paul writes about the resurrection of Christ's body in 1 Corinthians 15:20. Jesus Christ's resurrection was the "first fruits" of those who have fallen asleep. Through the Assumption, Mary received an early share in that resurrection.
Did Mary die before being taken up into heaven?
The Eastern Church refers to the "Dormition" of Mary, that is, she fell asleep and died, then her soul and then body were taken up into heaven.
The Roman Catholic Church has left the details less defined. Pope John Paul II said that she died before being assumed into heaven, but this was not in an official capacity defining a dogma of the Church.

Mary is not the woman in Revelation chapter 12. The woman referred to in this passage is Israel, which includes the Jewish people (which Mary was one of), the 12 Tribes of Israel, along with believers in Yeshua (Jesus), who are spiritual Israel. As with all scripture it can be taken out of context. To understand the meaning you must read what is written before and after the verse. If you keep reading, Revelation 12:6 clarifies that the woman fled into the wilderness where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there 1,260 days. It is obvious that the woman is not Mary. Mary Born without Sin The Bible does not state how Mary was born except that she was from the line of King David, who definitely sinned. No one except Yeshua was born without sin. When He came to earth, He was fully man and fully God and was tempted by Satan (Matthew 4 1-11), meaning He had free will to decide to take on sin or remain pure. He lived a Torah observant life and was the spotless Passover Lamb (1 Peter 1:18-19) (without sin) and therefore was able to take on the sin of the world, for those who repent and turn to Him for Salvation. That is why all must come to Him for Salvation. In 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 the scripture states that ALL die. It does not say everyone except Mary. Believers (including Mary) will be raised at the coming of the Lord. Conclusion The Scriptures do not record what happened to Mary after she passed away so adding anything else to it is not Biblical and just a false teaching. Mary was a Jewish woman who found favor with God and was charged with carrying Yeshua from inception to birth. There is no evidence that she received any special consideration from God after Yeshua was born. She aged and passed away like everyone else. Incorrect teachings such as this one is the reason why it states in Matthew 7 13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” I suggest everyone who is a Believer in Yeshua read the Scriptures for themselves and ask the Holy Spirit to show them which is the true Word of God and which teachings are man-made.

The English word ASSUMPTION means supposition, belief, idea, notion, speculation, theory, guesswork, presumption, etc... The word itself means it is not 100% PROVEN FACTS or BIBILICAL TRUTH... We could name countless others that God chose for specific things. I know that you are referring specifically to God choosing Mary to be the mother Jesus, but that task alone would not require Mary to be sinless. Therefore saying she was sinless simply because God chose her for that task is quite a reach. I know KZbin comments are not the best place to discuss these things, but I just wanted to share my thoughts when I came across your reply. Remember in Exodus 3 When God appeared to Moses on Mt Sinai?Moses saw a bush that was on fire but it did not burn so he was curious and went forward to see this mysterious bush but he was stopped halfway so to say by God. asking Moses to take off his sandals because the place where he was about to stand is a holy ground ..etc.. Depends what you mean by need. The Church explored and developed Christology in the first centuries. As She contemplated who Christ is, She started to explore and develop Mariology more and more over time. Many in the Church wondered what the truth about the assumption was. So the Church finally decided to look into it further and with the protection of the Holy Spirit, discerned the truth and proclaimed it. Christ said whoever hears his Church, hears Him. So, once something has been pronounced as true, we can no longer deny it’s veracity. There is good historical, tradition, and even biblical evidence for the Assumption. This was the explanation given to me though I do not recall if there was a citation given to me. Putting that aside, assuming without admitting that there is nothing in the scriptures that support this claim, don't you think that this explanation is logically valid? I mean, it is said, that those born from Adam and eve carries with them the original sin, yes? If that is the case, Jesus, having been born from Mary, who acquired the original sin, acquired it also, and therefore he becomes imperfect, which is entirely contradictory to the nature of God being all perfect. Moreover, according to my theologian teacher and friend, Jesus as God is not bound by time. So even prior to adam and eve, Mary was already exempted from the original sin. Chosen to be the Mother of God. To summarize, Mary is without orignal sin. Because if she did, she becomes disqualified to be the Mother of God. God is all perfect and He cannot be born from someone who bears the orignal sin, otherwise, His earthly body would also inherit the original sin which makes Him now, imperfect. Mary did not have original sin? This is tradition speaking not Scripture. Again the Assumption of Mary is not supported anywhere in Scripture. We are not told why Mary was chosen, nor are we told why Peter or Paul was chosen but 1Cor. 1:27-29 does teach us that God chooses the most unlikely individuals. It further teaches us that God’s choice of individuals confounds or is contrary to human wisdom. Human wisdom may well say that at the time there were better options than Mary available, but that’s human wisdom. Mary was not chosen because she is special, she is special because she was chosen. The same can be said of Israel. One of Israel’s greatest mistakes if not the greatest is that she believed that she was chosen because she was intrinsically better than any other.

If Mary was without sin she would not need a Savior. Jesus never referred to God as His Savior obviously because He was without sin.

Chosen to be the Mother of God. To summarize, Mary is without orignal sin. Because if she did, she becomes disqualified to be the Mother of God. God is all perfect and He cannot be born from someone who bears the orignal sin, otherwise, His earthly body would also inherit the original sin which makes Him now, imperfect.
