What thins out 14 the most is a front head w/ a port hole, it’s backwards. You tune more open with a 14 with a low fundamental (no port) and still get a snap of the shorter air space, that’s the magic.A deeper shell tends to resonate way too long on open tunings, so have to muffle more.

You make some great points here. Danny Carey uses 22x18 and 24x18 Bass Drums made out of melted Paiste Cymbals and they sound amazing.

Thanks so much for your opinion. I totally agree. I like Simon Phillips as much as anyone, but selling us on a shallow 24 inch never made sense to me. He believes they’re deeper sounding and more responsive. Personally, my favorite of all time was the 18” x 24”, especially for rock. No bass drum I’ve ever had shook the grandstands as much as that. My 18” x 22” gives a nice in the chest thing, too. Love your vids!

Great video! Abd I agree. 24" rocks. But what do you think is optimum? 16" deep, or 18" deep? I'm getting ready to get a new bd and can't decide on the best depth. Any insight you care to offer will be appreciated!

What do you think of mahogany bass drums?

If you purchased a 24” by 16” bass drum. What batter head would u put on? Any internal pillow dampening like the one dw offers?

Evans 360, Remo PStroke 3, Aquarian Super K 2. If your playing clubs doing a cover gig (like me) minimal pillow as poss. The DW is too much for 16in deep. (18 deep ok)

Always loved a full sounding bass drum, in the 1980 hated the "clicky" thin sound. Can't stand the recent double bass drum "sports drumming" which is pathetic. Can't beat a single humungus bass drum and active (and interesting) hi hat

This would be better with drum sound samples :)

I disagree. Thud and pop are two different things. The long ones thud and the 14" ones have energy or pop. Rick Beato should know he's recorded both. Are you talking about recording?

How come a 20" isn't seen as tighter? Easier to carry and just sounds better amongst band mates. More clarity. More musical with smaller toms. Tired of 22". Tired of 14" snares. A hair smaller for both. I know other people that agree. Drummers sound so loud. It gets obnoxious.

@@djevlhelvete Yeah, I am subscribed to this channel. He has other good points. Learned some stuff since I was born in 1977. Pre 1977 things. So, yeah I just like a tighter sound. If it was a louder band, I do play a 22x14 with 13" hats. Just so you both know. I just like 20x14 for 13" hats. 20x16 for 14" hats, 20x18 15" hats. The hat fits the boom. ...and as always, if the band is too loud for the bass drum, then the band is too loud for the rest of the kit. I suppose I wouldn't be opposed to a 24x14 with 13" hats if it was a mega loud band. ...and he likes more boom as he suggested... x16, x18. It's personal preference.
