It seems like the relative size of the Dumeril's is what gave it most of it's points. Cool vid, I'm wanting to get a boa soon myself, though I'm leaning towards a BCC because of the beautiful tail.

pfff there are so many! C. hortulanus (amazon tree/garden boa) C caninus emerald boa, the red tails are so cool and their feeding response is very good, then there are imperators, same as red tails but smallers and gingerish tails, rainbows have the best iridescence, you could also get a leuci or a red tail or imperator IMG motley

Dont get fooled... They get big, not as much as a bcc, but pretty much the same as a bci if you feed them properly.

I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with you on most of this....I currently own 9 Boas, several different species....Dumerils Boas and Common Boas and True Red Tails....I knew before you even started this video you would pick the Dumerils, which is fine cause I love mine also....But Common Boas and Red Tails do not need an enclosure as big as you say, they definitely do not need the height that you suggested and their humidity does not need to be as high as you say....I've never once in 35 years of keeping Boas ever fed mine a pig or a rabbit...yes I know people that have, but it absolutely isn't necessary....That being said I do respect your opinions and am very happy you did a video on the subject....thank you and keep up the so so work...JK

I've had a dumerils boa for about 4.5 years now, and I have personally found keeping the humidity on the higher end (60%) actually works best, especially as they get larger! When kept between 40-50% humidity, my dumerils, even when he was younger, ALWAYS had issues shedding. But when it's 60%, maybe a bit higher (only for a short period, such as with shedding!), my dumerils has perfect, whole sheds. Maybe it varies between individuals, but I wanted to share my experience since I've had mine for so long and they're just recently (in the last year or so) becoming more popular. This also might be an individual thing, but I've found my dumerils boa to be a very curious creature and he absolutely will utilize any and all space given to him. When he's more active, he tends to climb a lot, so it doesn't hurt to give them climbing space, like a sturdy log. I've seen him use his log for enrichment, basking, you name it. Like I said, these things may just be individual and I might just have a strange or unique dumerils boa, but my experience has taught me that they will use anything you give them, and higher humidity around 60% or slightly higher, at least during shed times, are best for them. I hope this helps!

I'm actually leaning toward a Dumeril's boa for my first snake chosen deliberately (the gopher snake I had as a teen wasn't planned). I will be having to keep the environment correct strictly in the enclosure. I won't have a heated, humidified reptile room to cover part of that. A smaller enclosure and lower temperature and humidity requirements will make that a lot easier to manage. I like that they seem to be curious and active when being handled and they are boas so feeding shouldn't be an issue. I can't think of any downside other than they cost a bit more initially and even there it's not too bad. Given how long they live, making sure to get a snake I can take care of properly is a lot more important to me then a few hundred dollars.

I don’t know if snakes can “trust” people but my two garter snakes definitely recognize me. Garters are incredibly inquisitive and love watching what’s going on in the room. They often sit perched with their head elevated looking at me while I work or eat at the dining table. One is super calm and comes up to my hand in order to slither out of her tank. The other one runs away. I don’t know if that’s “trust” vs “distrust,” but it’s interesting. They live together; many garter keepers cohabitate their snakes.

Great video, Adam! Those 'sports centre' interstitials are fun. It's rarely mentioned, but because of their old world conditions being a little more comparatively temperate they are less regular in the bowel movement department than their new world counterparts. Has that been your experience as well so far? Another point is that Dumeril's are one of the few members of the suborder Serpentes that growl. I'm of the opinion the only ones that I have seen growl are ones that are truly upset and not happy with the conditions they are kept in: So, perhaps not a great thing to have happen if you are a conscientious owner. Cheers, Adam!

I tend to forget how diverse boas can be. Like, I know pythons and colubrids come in many different varieties, but I often think of boas as just BCI/BCC and like... anacondas and stuff. But there's terrestrial boas like Dumerils and Kenyan Sand Boas, fully arboreals like Emerald Tree Boas, aquatics - like the anacondas, and so on. I'd love either a BCI or a Dumerils, if I were to have more space. I tend to keep my pets in bigger enclosures than what's typically recommended though, so my guinea pigs with their 4x4 and my ball python with her 4x2x2 take up most of the available space in my room.

I have a BCI that has a very light tan base color with brown saddles going down her body. Her belly is white with lots of black spots. Her temperament is perfect. She loves coming out to climb her humans. She is very willing to eat and relates tweezers to food so there is little chance of a food bite. She eats every 10 days as a 4 month old. My whole family just loves her. Pricing has gone up since you made this video. $125 for a BCI then prices go way up for color morphs.

You and Clint’s reptiles have already convinced my on my wanting a Dumeril’s Boa, I love boas, had a gorgeous pair of red tails I had to rehome after I was hit by a car, I wasn’t able to care for them, couldn’t lift their water dish let alone them, now I can’t have them because of how heavy they get, couldn’t shoulder them if I had too, huge plate in my shoulder lots of pins looks like a centipede and I have some weight limitations with my left arm too. You should include the weight of animals in the big animals videos especially so people will know if their ability to pick up their intended pet will suffice. I know a red tail like I had I can’t have now, but I can have a Dumeril’s. I am a boa fan when it comes to snakes my top favorite snakes are boas, so finding a “big” boa I can get that is very similar to my all time favorite red tail is a thrill to me. Glad I found yours and Clint’s sites and learned about these incredible boas.

Definitely research this. Dumeril’s boas get significantly heavier than BIs (double the weight) and many BCs. Don’t look at younger snakes, as this species grows very slowly but significantly for a long time. Males included (the theory behind this is that they combat for mates and therefore the males continue to grow at an increased pace in order to be a competitive size.) Look up Dumeril’s that are ten years or older. On KZbin, try Jason’s Exotics - he has a video with one that’s about 12 years old and is an accurate representation of every Dumeril’s over ten years old that I’ve handled. Very dense and easily 25lbs or more.

The only think I would say is different really between a BI boa or a BC boa is that BI boas might be able to thrive off jumbo rats as adults but a large BC boa will need rabbits. Also BC boas are a little less forgiving with care.

I know these are just your opinions, but I think there are some unfair comparisons here. The northern localities of Boa imperator (and Boa sigma, the Mexican boas where the leopard morph originated - a totally different species) also stay on the smaller side. I have an outlier female that's 7 ft, but they typically stay under 6 ft. If this head to head was against only these "dwarf" varieties of boa, the only real difference would be the humidity tolerance. I think Dumerils are gorgeous and great snakes, but if you want something that stays around that size but still comes in a bunch of morphs, the northern "dwarf" boas are fabulous! Totally admit to my bias, though, as I know you do too. :) Follow your passion!

While handling a dumerils boa at an expo the guy was telling me the snake i was handling was super docile. Not even 30 seconds later she struck out at my mom and got her in the eye. She wasnt doing anything to cause the snake to strike. She was standing away from us. I was super disappointed. Mom didn't believe me when i told her her eye was bleeding. It was a glancing blow.

Just for size only are blood pythons , eastern diamondback rattlesnake , coastel carpets pythons more compare to red tails in common boas ? In I hear from 2.5 to 3.5 years old dumerils don't really make big leap in size ? In people say they can breed from 1500 grams but I think if I get one this summer I will weight to bout 2500 -4500 to breed . But how will it effect hatching and litter size ?

Boas really are a great snake. But i personally prefer Burmese Pythons. I think they are the best. They are expensive tho'! I bought one years ago that was maybe 12 inches and paid $300 for! By the way, it was an albino Burmese! Would love to see a video on these with your take on them,
